Snow packing in tread is exactly the idea. Snow against snow presents a lot of friction and friction is GOOD when navigating snow. You actually want those tire treads to hold snow.
@dannycruz20222 жыл бұрын
Yes, the stuck snow in the treads is what gives the traction not the rubber itself. This is why mud terrains suck in the snow because they don’t hold snow in this large treads. So many videos out there focus on the rubber but that’s not where the traction comes from.
@sub-par-shooter11 ай бұрын
Huh... I never knew
@Ken197005 жыл бұрын
General rule for snow is that rubber doesn't stick to snow very well but snow does stick to snow, which is why it's good that they pack snow between the treads.

@@iamrambo99 yup. He also got the rubber compound thing wrong. It makes a huge difference on ice, Michelin has a great demo with three hockey pucks made of different rubber compounds. The soft winter compound puck stops much sooner.
@chesspieseatman5 жыл бұрын
A tire’s snow performance largely comes down to how well the tread and compound hangs on to snow. Snow-on-snow provides the best traction you can get in the cold. Ice is a different story and is more related to compound (modern snow tires contain silicates, my understanding is they’re kinda like abrasives grabbing the ice) and the tire maintaining pliability in low temperature (softness as you mentioned). Snow tire tech is really quite interesting. I’m just a plebe but trust me it’s worth a read or youtube explainer

In case you haven't found an answer, the only tires that won't slide on ice as easily are studded tires. They have little metal "studs" all around them that dig into the ice. I had the KO2s on my truck before switching to the KW3s, and while I never got to test them in the snow, I know they're rated pretty well in that category. Their rubber compound doesn't get super hard in cold conditions like a summer tire would, and the tread has lots of siping to help grip in the snow.

BF Goodrich makes the best synthetic rubber on the planet, always has. Here in Port Neches Texas, we have the BF Goodrich, GoodYear and Firestone plants all within 20 miles of one another. Its well known among the process operators in the plants that (1) Firestone has never produced a dry bale of rubber in its entire existence, dryness is key!, (2) Until early 80's, GoodYear couldn't keep belts from flying thru the rubber and totally destroying many many fender wells and paint jobs. Edit 3 years later: I left the tyres on until december 23. The only thing they, or anything but studded, dont do is any form of ice. Absolutely terrifying on ice. No grip whatsoever. Generally the braking grip is less than any actual winter tyre, but good enough for a skilled driver in the winter. My bf's were 7years old with 6mm tread left when i took them off. Ive watched alot of these now because Im buing them for my car, but I have to say that many of the youtubers gushing over the KO2 winter performance are missig an important thing. I live in norway and Im glad the KO2 will get me forward, but I at least will remember that their stopping ability on slippery roads are much worse than actual snow tyres. So please be careful. You should not expect to.be able to follow the traffic closely as it brakes. Cant wait to.get mine on today, but when the snow comes here in Norway Im taking them off for regular snow tyres continental. Btw us with automatics and some attention to what we are doing downshift the automatic to.brake too. Dont need a manual for that.

The people that slam on the brakes before a stop on snow in automatics just can't drive. 😂 That's why autos have D,2,1 on the selector. Love the Jeep and tires!

the people that follow other vehicles too close and expect that vehicle in front of them to know what's really going to happen deserve what they get

What is the 2 and 1 for???
@Robsbrd992 жыл бұрын
@@mercedesbenzs600bash instead of using the brake pedal when on a hill in slick conditions and causing the car to slide, a person can gear down an automatic by going from drive to 2nd or first gear. This uses the engine to brake mostly the rear wheels while leaving the fronts free to steer without loosing control.

Had the ko2's on my 99 tj, they where awesome in the snow. Have a jl now, waiting to get new tires as mine is a sport s and came with some lame street tires.

Robert Smart I got the Sport as well and I agree those tires are lame as hell. They could have put a decent tire on the Wrangler.

Curious, what's the big deal with snow flying off from a vehicle, it frkn snows ans snow falls on your vehicle and from trees when you drive underneath, someone please fill me in on what I'm missing.
@TopDawg68005 жыл бұрын
@@marnez390 It can reduce outward visibility for drivers behind you, and given the right conditions, can fly off in large pieces which shatter windshields and cause severe damage to other vehicles.
