I feel like I need to help you with this non-Alaskan's view on Alaska: Alaska is ginormous -- the biggest state in the union, to Texas' chagrin. It's not to scale on your map, and is set off to one part of the page where there's space because it's not part of the "contiguous" U.S. Instead, it's connected to Canada far to the north and across the water from Russia. It's known to be very cold, isolated, and wild, and to have a bunch of big moose and bears.
@LindaC6164 жыл бұрын
And yes, your impression is correct. It is kind of its "own thing". Winters are harsh; it takes a special kind of person to want to live there all year round. You should watch a show called "Northern Exposure"--sort of like Hamish MacBeth. I think you would like it
@chrisd70474 жыл бұрын
I lived there for 4 years and loved it. It is, indeed, very separate. "The Lower 48" is how they refer to the rest of the country (sorry, Hawaii). There is little manufacturing; most goods are shipped in from Seattle. It's said that 2 types of people move to Alaska: those running to something, and those running away from something. There is no state income tax (or there wasn't in the '90s). Instead, every Alaskan citizen gets a check from the state every year called the Alaska Dividend (officially the Alaska Permanent Fund). Last year it was $1600 per citizen. For an idea of the size, it takes 6-7 hours to drive between Alaska's 2 biggest towns, Anchorage (pop ~290k) and Fairbanks (~97k), and that's not quite halfway across. You can't drive all the way across the state. If you want to get to Barrow or Nome, you have to fly or sail around.

Bonus fact with this one, Alton is allegedly, according to people who believe in ghosts, a noted hotspot for hauntings 2) A wooden leg belonging to Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna was captured by an Illinois volunteer regiment during the Mexican-American war and is on display at the state military museum in Springfield. (But currently undergoing repairs per their website) 3) Cahokia, a prehistoric site of a Native American culture archeologists call Mississippians, is thought to be the largest pre-Colombian settlement in the US prior to it’s decline and eventual abandonment in 13th century. Also you probably think of Illinois as politically influential for three reasons, Barrack Obama represented Illinois in the Senate prior to his Presidency, it was a closely contested state in the 1960 presidential election and you will occasionally hear stories about the alleged shenanigans that took place, and it’s the home state of Abraham Lincoln, which tends to cast a long shadow.

Idaho is also known as the Gem State. Lots of places to go into the woods and find them if you live up north. Lightly populated. You can leave your car running in the parking lot and go shopping safely. When you get back it will not be gone and be warm in the winter or cool in the summer.
