Just going through this again I am appreciating your point about imagining we are on stage, so in the practice everything we play should be as clean and musical as possible. You set a good example of this. I am continually discovering how playing something slowly paradoxically makes you learn more quickly. I really like your Minor Swing simple solo too. Love those 6ths!
@GypsyJazzSecrets6 жыл бұрын
dingoswamphead yes it really helps me to practice slowly so the notes lock in. Then putting yourself on an imaginary stage forces you to get through a whole piece with that live vibe...cheers.. Robin

I've been taking private lessons from a famous Gypsy Jazz master in the NYC area. I actually get more out of these videos ,as I can stop and review the chords at my own pace, without my eye on the clock, and getting nervous or frustrated when I clam . Now I need to unlearn my Freddy King 'vibrato'! HA ha ha ! I'll never be as good as R.N., but I've enjoyed swimming in new musical waters . Thanks.

Hi Robin, I really love your videos and your playing! Great ideas and a sweet feeling. I'm looking for all the original (typical gypsy) ways to play all the chords. Would you please help me (us) out? :) All the best to you, Sasha from Austria

Hi Robin. Thank you for the tips bro. I see that you use minor 6 chords. Can you suggest scales or maybe licks that uses natural 6 that we can use on minor 6 chords which is very common in Gypsy Jazz ? Cheers mate.
@spenzerwright56939 жыл бұрын
I've only begun learning the style myself, but without getting into arpeggio superimposition, running minor 6th arpeggios can sound pretty swell. Gypsy jazz really isn't a scalar based music, but in western jazz, you might play some sort of minor mode... Usually a Dorian, to improvise over that sort of chord (look for one that includes the minor 6th). In my own playing, I've found that the aeolian (natural) minor mode, and conservatively, the harmonic minor mode sounds pretty damn good over them. Hope that helped.

+Julian S. Wright Hey thanks Julian. I agree that gypsy jazz is not scale based though if you know how to apply scales then you will be fine. You said minor 6th but i think the trick is to apply major 6th. Dorian/dorian bebop, melodic minor/melodic minor bebop all sounds good. You will only need to play 4 or 5 notes in a chord anyway just like arpeggios. You said arpeggio superimposition. What did you mean by that ? Can you explain it a bit more ? Thanks man.
@spenzerwright56939 жыл бұрын
+Doğukan Sezgin arpeggio superimposition involves playing one arpeggio of a chord over a different chord to get the sound of yet another chord, if that makes any sense. For example, by playing a Bmin7b5 arpeggio over a G7 chord, you are able to get the sound of a G9 chord in your line. It really involves sitting down and figuring out what notes are shared between chords. It's kindve like chord substitution ... Django would do a lot of tricks with arpeggiation, but I don't if he got into the theory of it. Probably a good thing. I'm still figuring it out, to be honest. I'd been used to playing mostly scalar music (a lot of American jazz and blues) and a lot of the gypsy jazz boggles my mind.

Very good explanation. Thanks man.

+Julian S. Wright hi there. A question popped up in my mind. Playing diatonic arpeggios/triads from the same scale of underlying chord is superimposition right ?

Rarely done but would sound incredible. Accordion is more popular obviously for portability. Cheers Brydon! Robin
