Im a 71yr old fart. Had auto shop 3yrs in HS. Attended/sponsored by Chevy dealer in the 70's. I kind of went thru what u did. I couldnt get hired, so a friend got me a job at a local plant. Chevy dealership called me & said we sent u to school. And i said, but u said u didnt have to hire me. I never persued as a mechanic, but used my skills for decades on my own cars. Not sorry. You are very intelligent & a great guy. You could open your own place & would do great. This line of work is hard on your back. Somwthing to consider as u age. Great attitude. I'd be honored to have u work on MY car, & I'm very picky. 👍 I also sub'd.

Hey my names marcus. I started as a Toyota lube technician early January. I’m maintenance certified right now. Still hourly. I want to grow my knowledge fast, but it seems like the shop doesn’t want me to grow. My experience at Toyota isn’t the worst of the worst, but I’ve seen how the environment in my shop is kind of unfair. I’ve noticed people at my level move flat rate before me and I question what can I do to get better. Also I’ve been there longer than them I try to get involved, but it’s apparently a problem if I’m not seen cleaning the shop. I don’t have a issue cleaning and I come in everyday cleaning the shop, but it shouldn’t have to be like that. Right now I’m a attending community college for an automotive technology degree to gain knowledge.

Great advice regardless of occupation. I was a “Customer Service Engineer” before the acronym “IT” was ever uttered. I had some college under my belt but a lot of practice experience thanks to a small mainframe repair company began a unaccredited school, well before the big names came on the scene. There were mentors there and all along my nearly 30 year career in IT and more recently, Cybersecurity. There were a couple jerks in management along the way but as you said, hunker down, learn more, and you can put yourself in a position to move on. I never went back to college between family and work, but my OJT and willingness to do things others would not put me in positions that got me noticed. One of my managers would remind me when I’d complain about a site or customer or whatever, “Mark, if anyone could do it, you wouldn’t be there.” That’s when I’d have to get off my soapbox. 😬

I’m 21 years old about to be 22 right now and have been at a GMC/Buick/Subaru Dealership as a Lube tech for a year now, started off as a retail sales person at tires plus, entry level tech for Mercedes for 7 months and then this dealer. What you said is also part of my stress with the dealer and how I view the industry. I graduated from a tech school in June of this year and I feel like I would be wasting more of my time where I could be already doing big jobs by myself. but our service manager oversees the lube team and focuses more on the main line guys. So right now I’m looking at a Honda Dealer and hoping for the best

You spoke that correctly to a T. I was a 35 year tech for Toyota and I too did experience the say as you when I first started. But it made me want to be a better tech than the other techs in the shop so that is what I did. We had several owners that owned our dealership. The early owners were not keen on training,but when we got one that was I was a Master Tech in no time,this was way before MDT came along. Later on I did become MDT and maintained it till the end. I was the one to come to for knowledge and always helped my fellow techs. I was great at one time up until the last owner with me being the Shop Foreman they decided that they didnt need me anymore and that they were not going to have a Shop Foreman any longer.

My situation was worse because I was an illegal Mexican, but all those struggles you lived are the ones that are going to forge your character, discipline and focus on your goals. After 30 years on this career, I opened my own shop 20 years ago, and my work and service to my customers is what built my positive reputation!

It’s all about putting yourself in other people’s shoes is what will help you grow. IT is no different. Worked with jerks and clowns in teams. At one company I hunkered down and learned and improved my IT skills and support. Then the jerks left, some were let go and some moved on. I was now the guy the new team looked up to. On the old team there were no documentation or runbooks on how to fix a common issue. So I created my own repository of how to documentation. Then when it was my time to move onto a better opportunity, they hated that I was leaving but I left them in good hands. Good things always happen for those who can endure the storm. There is always sunlight after a storm. I always tell the young bucks (I’m 41) to always use negative energy as motivation to improve yourself and your situation.

It's both good and bad, but if you decide to move on, municipal shops, police departments, fire departments, etc... have fleet techs. It's never flat rate. Always hourly. Usually pension, sometimes union, typically decent benefits. If you decide to go that route, having diesel tech, or emergency vehicle tech (EVT) from ASE are hugely advantageous. 8 hours work = 8 hours pay every day. There's still cherry picking jobs when you're the new guy, but always paid no matter how long it takes. Sometimes stability is worth it when you're trying to put bread on the table. I'm sure you're aware of this, but just in case you aren't, something to consider. That's a really interesting and unfortunate story. That GM shop did you dirty. Sad, but there's a lot of tech with the same story you have. Glad you landed on your feet. But man you took a gut shot on that. Says a lot about a brand when the dealership model is like that. I see why so many sharp guys leave, or go to independents.

I've thought about working for the city or a fleet company. The city jobs and their benefits are lovely, but at the same time, i will be taking a pay cut. The hours i turn being flat rate, plus the commission i get from my team and helping the shop with diagnostic, helps me to do well. But it took me becoming a master diagnostic technician, where I'm more in control because of my experience and knowledge. If i was the same tech at Cadillac or still being screwed at a shop, the city jobs would be way more appealing for me. And that's way it's way more appealing for the majority of techs out there.

Great Video. I would add to enjoy your work. A lot people do work they don’t enjoy and are not very happy people. You have a lots of empathy and that is a great trait. Help your fellow person. I work in therapy and a lot of new grads can’t wait to work. A lot times they sign for clinic and then are overwhelmed to 20 patients. They also leave very quickly. I really enjoy your channel and content and I have a technical question. I live in northern Michigan and this past June traded my 2022 Tundra for a 2024 4Runner. I love my 4Runner, but something bazaar happened at my 10000 mile check up. It’s getting cold hear so I went to use my remote start and it would not work. This remote start worked at delivery and I used a couple times after delivery but then didn’t use it until it got cold. At the 10000 I advised the service write it was not working. They gave me a loaner and had my truck a full week. I was then advised it never had remote start and I asked how that could be when it was demoed by the salesman at delivery and I used it myself. I was then told it was a “Temporary feature”, I then advised I wanted it turned back on and was advised it could not be done. I then asked what was the remedy because this is my wife’s car and she wants her remote start. 333.00 dollars plus tax later the dealership added remote start. What I don’t understand is how did it have it then it didn’t and it could not be brought back through any soft ware. In my daughters words “Seems sketchy”. Is this temporary feature thing real????

Hey, thank you. I really appreciate it. Most new cars will come with service connect/remote start subscription that expires after a few months of service. If you want to continue to use the service connect, remote start, and even the ability to lock and unlock with your cellular phone, you will need to renew the subscription.

That seems like a big downgrade. The 22 Tundra is significantly safer and a much better overall vehicle than the 4R. I would have kept the Tundra especially since you would have received a brand new engine.

Hello, I have an issue with a Toyota Tacoma 2016 water flood, replaced all modules in the car , ECU, bcm, immobilizer, the issuing I’m having is I had couple locksmith comes they can’t get to program the key in the viechle. I BELIEVE THAT JESUS SAID IT I PRACTICED IT 😊. about the ABS LIGHT ON 2010 Prius I took it to mechanic he put computer on and said brake sensor on. I’ve replaced the sensors light still on this happened when I replaced the cv axles. Car is out of alignment I heard that triggers the abs light and skid light as well but now brake pedal is bit spongy I’m a mechanic as well but I hate doing that booster or master cylinder even Though I don’t hear that noise on the one you’ve described on different video I’ve tried the troubleshooting on OBD PORT BRIDGING PIN 13 and 5. Lights go out but ones I brake I hear a clank noise on brakes trying to adjust ABS ON WHEELS AND LIGHT POPS BACK ON , any suggestions ? And thanks for your vid. Blessings
