when can I plant after spreading the seaweed
@rickeshpatel40254 жыл бұрын
I live in the bay and use natural seaweed washed up on the beach or rocks...I leave it unwashed in a bowl in the sun to allow it to dry and crumble it into the soil I amusing...I think some seeds liked it more than others but all are growing well so far!
@JacobsBackyardGardening4 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a good method, particularly letting it dry so you can crush it! Cheers Rickesh!

We gather seaweed in the fall and bury it shallow under newly added composted cow manure and the garden soil. Thick coating of Winter Rye seed on top and by spring the seaweed is all decomposed and then we till.

I use tonnes of seaweed and grow heaps of veg and flowers and never wash it. I literally just pull it out of the car and chuck it around all my plants and on all my beds. You don’t need to wash it at all 👍
@saltlifegull40916 жыл бұрын
Great job, Jacob:) I live by the bay and made the mistake of not washing the salt off the seaweed - everything I planted in it died:( I'll try it again, but will soak it in fresh water this time.
@JacobsBackyardGardening6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Leah. Yes I've heard of some horror stories due to the salt! Hope it goes better for you next time! Cheers

I will learn from your mistake Leah… Wash it first.!!! It’s amazing how much free nutrients are available and better than chemicals !!

When i used seaweed, I dried it first and crumbled it fine and used it as a top dressing - the plants responded fast

I use seaweed to great effect as a mulch. I can't use it as much as i want because transporting it is an issue. back when i can a truck i got a whole truck bed full of the stuff😂. Sadly i no longer have a truck. But that seaweed kept the most stubborn grass (don't know what it was) frompopping up. the darn things use to grow up from both hay and pine needles>_>. I also used seaweed to add bulk to my compost. What i aim to try is drying out the seaweed and blending it in my high powered blender to get a fine powder:P. I have a feeling it'll work well.

It's great in concept. But it depends on where you live. In the USA many states have regulations regarding the harvesting of seaweed. Where I live, you have to have a salt-water fishing license to legally gather it. Basically, if I want seaweed for my garden it won't be 'free'.
@JacobsBackyardGardening7 жыл бұрын
Yeah I know it depends where you are, unfortunately! Hope you can find some free fertilisers around! Cheers & have a good one!

Just keep a careful eye out for the seaweed police patrolling the shore as you discreetly stuff it in your bag ;-) soon breathing the air might be a crime to if you haven't paid your monthly air tax or don't have a special breathing license. The rich and powerful "own" nature, and our lives. So we need their permission for everything of course and need to pay them just to exist on this planet. I'm starting to admire criminals a little more each day...

HELP!!!! I gathered seaweed and put it into my compost bays. I was aware of some jumping flies which have obviously ended up in my compost. Oh my…. Today the bays are a writhing mass of seaweed fly maggots…. What do I do? I turned it all tonight but will they mature and go or stay and just repeat the cycle… what to do? HELP 🤮

Does putting the seaweed exposed like this attract flies and Stinks.

Surprisingly no... at least not to the extent I thought. There were a few but not too many that you really noticed. Cheers!

THANK JACOB WHERE YOU GET THE SEAWEED FROM. I HEARD THAT YOU NOT ALLOW TO TAKE SEEWEED FROM BEACHES.
@JacobsBackyardGardening4 жыл бұрын
Depends on where you live. At that time I was living in south west Victoria, Australia and it was legal to take seaweed from the beaches. You always have to follow the local law. Cheers Yuk

Dude "salt from the seaweed can harm your garden" ? Then why do they sell epsom salt as a soil additive for gardens?
@leilaluginbill9164 жыл бұрын
Frank Ybarra table salt is NaCl...sodium chloride and epsom salt is magnesium sulfate...MgSO4
@rainesail4 жыл бұрын
Leila Luginbill What is ocean salt?
@JacobsBackyardGardening4 жыл бұрын
They're different salts, salt is just a word to describe a wide variety of chemical compositions. Salt from the ocean is very harmful because it has a lot of sodium (which is highly toxic). Whereas epsom salt contains magnesium and a little sulfur, which is essential for plant growth so its a good salt. Hope that helps you out Frank, have a good one!

The salt 🧂 on aquatic plants MUST be washed off, or it’ll ruin your garden, proceeds to rinse 🚿 on lawn. & this “Emphasising” “Harvesting” sea weed, is an effective way to draw the proverbial crabs 🦀 🦀 🦀 Should just of said that you scòÒPĘD beached sea weed, “Harvesting”, implies that you tore/riPped it from it’s Living State⚠️ 📍🦘
