I can relate to having to watch my gear when filming outdoors in or near public places. When I first got my S5ii, I got the 50MM f1.8 with it because it was super cheap on MPB. So, when I first went outside to film with it, I had to stand away from it to properly frame myself the way I liked. Where I am in Southern California is near the beach, so it's pretty crowded throughout the day. So, as I'm talking, I'm also looking around and watching people who are walking towards me and my camera. It can make me feel awkward, which can show in how I come across in the video. Now that I have the 24mm lens, I'm less stressed because I can sit or stand closer to my camera. Making me appear much more relaxed on camera. Regarding New York, I lived there for a year before coming back to LA. And the way you described New Yorkers was exactly what my experience was. I lived in the upper west side near Amsterdam in a co-op apartment. My experience in New York was great. I hope to have a place back there some day. As an example of my New York experience, on my second day there I was walking around in Manhattan looking for access to the A train. I was looking at a laminated map of the train system, when a man in a business suit and briefcase said, "Where do ya wanna go?" I told him I was looking for the A train. He said, "follow me". I followed him for three blocks before we reached the stairs leading down to the A train station. I thanked him profusely. He said, "No problem. Have a great day". Thank you, you too, I said. Anyway. New York is a great place. The people of New York are friendly. And, as you said, they're honest and they don't take shit from you. They're good people.

Man, in some of my shots for my features... I'm literally blocks away from my camera sometimes. have to hide it as best I can to get the shot, and it's worth it, but it can be nerve wracking for sure. ;) And another great NYC story. We're nice people. Folks are just not used to people simply being exactly as they are all the time, no putting on for anyone, just genuine 100% of the time. Having said that, there are plenty of New Yorkers from other places, other countries, different parts of the country, and so, really? You never know what you're gonna get in NY, but if you get to the boroughs, like the BX, BK, Queens, chances are you'll find real, home grown NY'ers. ;)

There is a famous Bruce Lee quote, that could help you, even when its rough on the YT statistics, it goes "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times." For film making, as you say in this episode, to shoot in harsh sunlight and still get it to look good, means that you by doing so many videos, know how to get the look you want fast, and can focus your energy on the message, the content. - I guess it's the same reason even seasoned, skilled chefs still slice and dice veggies, meat and what not on a daily basis - even if that the mincing is among the first think a culinary student gets to practice (usually a couple of kilos of carrots! 🙂 ) - And for the same reason seasoned and skilled military spend so much time on the shooting range: Good skills takes constant practice, over and over again. I know by god I wish I could do pushups just once and be done with, but that is not how our bodies work - we need constant "calibration" to be able to perform at a certain level - when we let that slip, we loose our edge. So even if dear old Bruce talks about fighting, I believe that "practice makes perfect" goes for any line of profession, be that a dentist, a filmmaker or a runner. We get nothing for free, so we better enjoy the journey, for the greater benefit of our professions.

Yes to getting in those 10,000 hours to become really good at something. I completely agree with you. Persistence, patience, dedication, resilience, all of it required to master anything, at least to some extent, because I"m not sure we ever REALLY master anything. There's always room to grow. Maybe unless you're Bruce Lee. lol.

Not blowing smoke man, I swear your videos when I watch them always seem to have the message I needed to hear that day. Also I am not from NY, but I find it refreshing and so many great people and friends I have there. It reminds be of going to Czech for example where they actually refer to the fake friendliness in retail we see here as 'the American style' where as there they are much more blunt, not kissing ass fake. It's more real, and honestly refreshing when you understand the culture. Not sure if that makes sense or not - all to saw F(orget) someone that would hate because of where you are from. Thanks WILk for another message!

@@BMadPhoto Thanks for all of this, I appreciate the kind words and totally understand what you're saying about people. I can't stand when people generalize about anyone, and folks do it about New Yorkers all the time. But they also do it about people from LA, the Midwest, France, etc, etc, etc... stereotypes are never good, but culture is real though, for sure. There's a difference. Thanks so much for coming through and taking the time to contribute. I don't take that for granted.

The chromatic aberrations are great. I noticed that before you even mentioned it. They create interesting colours and sense of depth. "perfect lenses" are no good even if there was such a thing. As for youtube, just keep going. You could put amazing videos up and it could take years for people to find you but generally they will eventually. I just found Nieve Ella a UK song writer. 4.5K subscribers. Music is a bit subjective but I like all sorts from Jazz to Classical so I'll listen to anything. Nieve Ella is kind of indy guitar music but Influenced by a few other acts like Billie Eilish for one example. Nieve's tunes are really good. Good melodic hooks which you don't hear that often. I will predict that she will get way more successful.
@RockWILKАй бұрын
I know chromatic abberation is annoying for people, but I also kinda like it. It's surreal and can be used to tell a story, or at least to contribute to it. I just use whatever shows up and make it part of the whole thing. That's what theater has always taught me, because when you're on stage, you never know what might happen during a performance, and you have to stay with the story no matter what, and so, good training behind me, for sure. I LOVE Billie Eilish, I'm not aware of Nieve, I'm gonna check her out. And I will continue, for sure, but damn, they're moving me slow. All good, I enjoy the process, and that's the most important thing. I also learn something new with each video, so, I'm grateful for the process.

Your shots are so beautiful and well composed it almost distracts from your bleeding head wound. You should do these shots and VO in a calm voice about NY stuff. You key demo will be people who used to live in NY and miss it. Give the history of the bridge, the river, the politician that made it while people just lose themself in the visual detail. Just my 2 cents
