Once red hot, quench it with ice water. Works every time . The heat expanded the metal, and then the cold shrinks it, breaking the bond of the rust

But it might change the metal as if you were forging it, changing its properties, I think, or wouldn't it? Which may be irrelevant or may not.

Sometimes drilling a hole into/through the shaft then heating it and letting it cool will allow the shaft to shrink enough to come out too. Kind of like welding on an internal bearing race to shrink it. Love the tenacity you showed in getting that shaft out. Cheers from NB Hey, was that a Uniweld torch?

Been there and done that also Dony actually built up at least an inch on the forearm the first year. Now at EP we use the Induction Innovations Venom Mini Ductor heat gun with proper coil assembly to heat the outer metal. There are times when we water quench the heated metal to shock the rust loose. Jake and i both think the Induction Heat Guns are not only the safest and most effective tool to use for this work but also consider it the number one tool in our shop which eliminates issues with seized nuts and bolts.

I deal with this kind of shit all the time on heavy equipment. Either heat it red hot and shock it with water, or run a weld bead down one side of the shaft housing, which expands just the metal on one side and breaks the rust bond. Only works if the shaft/pin is in thinner material, exactly like that situation. Also, you should get yourself an air hammer. Lots of smaller impacts does a better job knocking siezed pins loose than a couple big hits with a sledge. Take a drill bit and make a divot in the middle of the shaft to keep the air hammer bit from walking too much.

Let me give you a little tip. Heat both red hot which you almost had them anyway. Take a water hose right away and cool to the touch as quickly as possible. You will be shocked 😳 at how easy the piece of shaft comes out. Give it shot of penetrating spray first. If you’re stuck item will fit in a pail of cold water just drop it in. I’m 73 and an old welding shop taught me this trick when I was in my teens. I also have a 55 ton press 😂. Love your videos. Don’t be afraid to try the cold water trick! Paul V.

Dony's been suggesting this for years before Taryl, same goes for the it's a lawn mower, not the shuttle. sounds like one very stubborn shaft to remove from my view and yep Donny mate i know the good old oxyacetylene torch sure as anything saved your life for sure in that day and yep penetration oil sure does help including the old oil can from what i know too and a good outcome i reckon and a good tip for sure letting it cool down afterwards as that will be quite hot to handle and no kidding and i,d simple leave that impeller to cool itself for sure and cheers from Australia 🐨🐑🦘🌴🇦🇺 to your area in Canada 🇨🇦 🍁🍂 and have a Merry Christmas🎅 too.🧝🧝‍♂🧝‍♀🎄

If the shaft is soft enough to drill into, drill it well below the surface. When you go to knock it out the shaft has less thermal mass, the punch cant slip and youre almost pulling it out instead of applying all your force to the end. Good job! That was a difficult one.

I was surprised you didn't just grind/bevel the end of the mushroomed shaft. Is that shaft hardened? If not, drilling a hole in the middle will reduce tightness as well. Not easy, long hole to drill, but could be done from both ends, doesn't have to be perfectly centered and probably wouldn't have to go all the way through. Well done!
