One of the biggest reasons why I think Wolverine is the most popular X-Man is because of his backstory/moral grey outlook. The majority of the X-Men's roster consists of flat protagonists that all fall in line with Xavier's peaceful coexistence mission, but because of Wolverine's background of being in 4 wars and the torture of the Weapon X experience, it grants him a more "realistic" view of humanities flaws. To me, it makes sense why Logan may have been apprehensive to join a group that wants peace with humanity when humanity doesn't want peace with mutants.

We don’t talk about Infinite When Marvel and DC had a crossover event, out of any other Marvel character it was Wolverine who was paired to DC’s most popular character Batman to make the Amalgam character Dark Claw. Wow, watching this made me realize just how surprisingly similar Deadpool and Wolverine's success stories were, in terms of their progression... Both of them: were originally made to be one-off side characters, gained interest for subverting typical hero archetypes yet were disliked by many for being hard to relate to, then gained a tragic backstory which went on to shape their character motivations and made them more likeable to readers, went from merciless and needlessly mean to having some sort of core moral code, were done dirty in their first official tv/film adaptation (Deadpool arguably more so, but I digress), and then finally rose to fame via the dedication and perfect casting of their live-action counterparts. Which subsequently had a massive impact on their popularity, both mainstream and in comics, making them both household names. ...no wonder this team-up has been so highly anticipated. Even without taking the in-universe connections into consideration, they're still a match made in comic book heaven! lol
