The wedding didn't cost 500. It cost the COUPLE $500. The guests paid for the cake, flowers, and even paid for their own food. Gross!

What's the difference? At most weddings, it's similar to a swap: guests are provided food, etc., and guests pay that back with a wrapped gift or hand a check to the groom.
