How would you guys change legendary resistances in 5e?

I'm no game developer or mechanic balancer, so i do not know if my idea is good or bad, but i was thinking of maybe doing one of the following: A) They get to re-roll their save on a failure, but must take the new roll no matter what. B) Basically give them the Lucky Feat. I was thinking on maybe doing something with either reflecting or make it so whoever made the boss do a Save in the first place could maybe also end up getting at least half the damage or condition, but i'm not sure how good that would be.

By buffing fighter's indomitable feature into a legendary resistance instead of a near useless reroll of a saving throw. Since you're really only going to use it on like wisdom saves etc. Since those ones aren't just damage. Failing the same save twice in a row is so much worse and less cool than going, "I choose to succeed" That's metal as FUCK

Two ways: 1st: Legendary Resistances are a +5 and re-roll, not an auto-success, so it's very possible that they can burn all 3 and still fail against that Stunning Strike. 2nd: Legendary Resistance is Advantage, not an Auto-Success. Also, there are better ways of doing Legendary Monsters, like giving them an extra little buff at the end of their turn. Actually, 5e is a mess when it comes to balance. Once you get to Fireball... 8d6 Fire Damage is a lot once you consider the fact that a Wizard at that Level, has 5d6... Congratulations, you can now Kamikaze in a massive Area that is almost guaranteed to hit everyone you want.

My simple plan is just: Keep legendary resistances BUT, tie some of the specific monster's stats or abiliities to how many LegRes they have remaining. Meaning, every time they are forced to spend one, they get noticeably weaker. Then whenever you do spend one in combat, communicate that to the players. Your boss monster didn't get CC'd, but its desperate defense cost it 2 points of AC, or it lost the ability to deal automatic counter damage to melee attacks, or drained the power from its Ring of Fireballing Da Fools... and of course, it can only pull that BS one or two more times (at similar cost). Now draining Legendary Resistance feels like a strategic contribution to the damage-race, even though the spell "failed"

I prefer to make dice related spell shields. They basically block cantrips but encourage high level spell usage(1+1d8). If they roll high enough, the spell fizzles. If not, it goes through. Not as interactive as some ideas I bet others have made, but i like making the math rocks roll. Plus its bypassed by martials so they get free reign to try and collectively body the target

​@@bonewizard If you are going to repeat the gundam joke for Astral Self, you can use Zato from Guilty Gear (or other puppet fighting game characters) instead of JoJo just to say. Edit: You can also use Ansem/Terranort from Kingdom Hearts with the Ki/Key joke just to make it full circle.

Monk was the first class I ever played in DnD, and I suffered so much. I never got to have fun, and it always felt so weak. Now I can finally fulfill my dream of playing a cool ass Dandy Vampire monk with the Open Hand style. Bless you skelly, for achieving the dream my 14 year old self wished for

Honestly, as someone who's been playing a PHB monk for the last 2 years in a campaign it is *painful* Still my favourite class and I'm glad to to say that I've survived from level 1-14 so far, but damn was that carried by the paladin and cleric 😅

If you weren't already aware, the reason people think this is just base monk + is because all of these features were things base monk got in older editions. In 3.5, Quivering Palm was just the 15th level ability all monk's got.

Flee, Mortals! pretty much fixed legendary resistances. Basically, the creature has to sacrifice something to trigger them. For example: Ireful Defense (3/Day). When Forzaantirilys fails a saving throw, she can succeed instead. When she does, attack rolls made against her have advantage until the end of her next turn. Painful Resistance (3/Day). Eight eyes float around Xorannox and create his Eye Psionics. If Xorannox fails a saving throw, he can destroy a random floating eye (chosen by rolling a d8) and succeed instead.

For ranger, take a look at Baldur's gate 3. it completely fixes the issues with Favored Enemy and Favored Terrain. How? by making it based on what you've learned from hunting those creatures or in specific environments, which is so incredibly cool!

Adding on to this since the ranger is a 1/2 caster they should get both a cantrip unique to their favored terrain if its a damage cantrip it uses their wisdom mod and a small buff to attacks against their favored enemy.

@@trentgrady9389 Some of the favored terrain/favorite enemy in BG3 give spells, so this isn't out of place for it, some spells can easily be given to the Ranger depending on favored terrain/favorite enemy, Like Thorn whip, Shillagh, Druidcraft, guidance, etc. for instance, Keeper of the Veil (favorite enemy, hunts extraterrestrial foes) gives you Protection from good and evil.

Something else that could make monks as a whole more strategic and gives them more identity as a class that can use their martial arts to debuff enemies (because let's face it, they should be rewarded for having the nerve to attack fully armored, armed enemies without a weapon or armor themselves) is to change stunning strike to 'disabling' strikes, which give the monk a CHOICE of what kind of debuff to inflict (This also makes monks less of a headache for DMs) that each have a different save, instead of just CON. The debuffs could be something like reducing a target's STR to 10 for a turn or forcing them to drop an item or reducing their speed to 0, debuffs that aren't as strong as a stun, but have a more diverse save type, rewarding monks that test for weaknesses that allow them to score their debuffs more reliably instead of DMs jacking up every enemy's CON stats as soon as a monk reaches level 5. The only time the monk will actually stun (which is as disabled as you can get without being dead, so it doesn't matter what effect you're trying to achieve) is upon rolling a crit, in which case, the stun automatically succeeds, no save for the opponent. The disabling strike does crit damage AND stuns the target until the monk's next turn, which would be hugely rewarding.

Maybe give it a way to scale with additional ki spent at higher levels. Like a dex save to avoid blindness for a turn that can be upgraded to work on blindsense?

@@SilvrSavior Absolutely. The main problem monks have is that for the most part, NONE of their core abilities scale with level, and they absolutely should. One of the homebrews I use is flurry of blows increases to 3 bonus attacks at level 7, and at level 11, the damage bonus for flurry of blows becomes DEX+WIS.

i swear, next time i make a monk like character, ill make them a skeleton monk in homage to you. monk is one my favorite classes in dnd and dnd like games. i love that fantasy. seeing you make so many good changes to the class for people that also like them, it makes me so happy. thank you.

I wish d&d had more execution style abilities that did better effects based on lower HP. I think it really sells the idea of an epic final attack cause a lot of times in combat, the big bad guy will just get chipped away and taken out by some random attacks that are a bit harder to make feel impactful IMO.

I agree. Alot of games have execute abilities that work pretty well. They are pretty simple to implement. You could even introduce them at lower levels too. the lower the level, the lower the hp needs to be.

Dreamscarred press for PF1e has a Scarlet Throne Maneuver (3rd party version of Tome of Battle stuff) that was an execution style called Final Blow that only worked on enemies with 25% of their health left. That school of maneuvers also keyed off of sense motive, which that maneuver could use as a free action to check if they were susceptible to it.

Hmmmmm. Now i want to make a monk subclass that uses vibrations to hurt or defend, could be like someone has honed their ability to control their muscles and can punch and vibrate their surroundings to do more damage or even extend their unarmed strike range. Hmmmmmmmmmm.

The only reason why I love quivering palm is because of a very badass monk in an R.A.Salvatore book. He just made the ability so cool and it functions pretty similarly in 5e. But even so, I must say that your changes would be pretty good.

For the sake of flavour, I’d make that Sanctuary exclusively ritual cast that requires no components, and it lasts until either a rest or the end of an encounter. I like the idea of it being basically a meditation session, bringing some inner peace to your backliner. Obviously that’s nowhere near as versatile but like I said, just for fluff.

The longer I look at that mass of text for wish and how it’s basically make your own mechanic and hope the gm doesn’t go “I don’t like that but you paid the spell slot so I can’t say no…ever hear of Monkey’s Paw?” The more I feel it’s weird it’s even an option at all

My fix for legendary resistances is either give every creature a unique defensive ability (seems hard) or give them Legendary Resilience: when this creature is subject to an effect with a duration other than “Until Dispelled” or “Instaneous”, roll 1d4 - The creature’s proficiency + the relavent modifier of the affecting creature (the stat which modifies the DC or Attack). The total result is the number of rounds the effect lasts. This way, more powerful creatures can escape instant win effects, but the effects still get a chance to shine

I like the idea that the sanctuary effects allies in a small aura and just got suppressed for a turn on any beneficiary who attacks. It’d probably need to be limited to like once per day. I like the thematics of that, shows the inner peace is radiating out from you.

LOVED the video, it is my favorite monk subclass for a simple reason: IT'S WHAT A MONK IS, when I play a monk I wanna punch things, not throw light beams nor be a dragon for some reason?... Just pick Dragonborn as a race... So thanks to you I can make my table play a monk subclass that it's actually meaningful and not a "i am useless...hey! I reached lvl 17, now I can OBLITERATE EVERYTHING just with an unarmed strike"

I would fix legendary resitances by having them eat up legendary actions per use (with the cap of course). Therefore, the boss has to forgo offense to be more defensive. This makes it so the saving throw did something and ups the chances of survivability for the party.

Nice video as always ! You reworks all have a special place in my "homebrew" folder :D I would love to see your way of buffing the warlocks subclasses so that they all are as powerful as hexblade :) I have some ideas of my own that my players playtested and so far they like it ^^

Personally I don't think hexblade is that bad if you aren't multiclassing. Hexblade is definitely the messiest subclass in 5e, if that makes sense.

@@bonewizard Yeah I agree only the lvl 1 is overpowered. The reason I buffed other subclasses / changed some of the mechanics is because I think thematically it is super cool to multiclass into warlock to gain power. I just want every Patron to be a valid choice if you want to make a pact for "fast power"

I really like the IDEA of the Way of Mercy monk, especially its main ability - tapping your allies midcombat to heal them while also beating the shit out of things at the same time is COOL. The rest of it though...yeah.

About legendary resistances, i agree you can design them in another way (most people do this by taking away abilties of giving them debuffs). this is fine and mostly makes it feel better, but it doesn't really solve the underlying issue. due to the way 5e is designed, legendary resistances are unfortunatly nessary in one form or another. the reason why they are here is because there are so many abilities/spells that just can end a bossfight, the monks quivering palm is just one example, even in the phb alone there are many examples of this, true polymorph, dominate monster, forcecage, even something like disarm from battlemaster can cripple a monster if you can get it's primary weapon. your quivering palm solution is just one of the thing you need legendary resistances for. If you want to get rid of legendary resistances you need to basically overhaul a lot of 5e abilties and the way conditions and saving throws work. Yes, pathfinder and older editions don't have legendary resistances, but this is because those systems where not build with the same abilities in mind. spells and effects are more limited by the things like degrees of failure, and weaker conditions, which 5e mostly doesn't have. you cannot fix this by simply changing legendary resistances, you need to adress the underlying issues that makes having legendary resitances nessary. it's kinda like invincibility phases in video game bossfights. some game allow you to make your attacks extremely strong, especially with the right builds/buffs and that's part of the fun, but in order to make it they don't end the bossfight too quickly you need unfortunetly those phases. it's not the most fun mechanic, but unless you want to fix the system that makes your attacks so strong from the ground up (which most likely requires redesigning a large part of the game), you either need to overtune the bosses to ridiculous extremes, making any non-optimized build not useful, or keep them but try to make them fun.

​@@bonewizard the issue with that is how ingrained it is within 5e, and the way saves are designed. you need to ban or change a lot of the things in 5e to make it work, which at a certain point isn't really fun for anyone to nerf or ban them. the issue is that you can't simply keep nerfing or removing abilities without feeling like you take away some of what makes those worthwhile and fun or are overly policing what you players can do. like do you want to remove/change something like command, because allows you to replace their turn with a command? then you partly remove what makes command interresting combat spell in the first place, the ability to give them an command and remove a turn and give them an interresting command instead (if you players are creative with it). You can argue that nearly every crowd control or disabling effect stop a boss fight, not only spells and abilities, but even basic conditions. even ones the ones you didn't point out in your old paralyze and stunned video. Frightend/restrained can stop melee enemies from doing anything if it's not next to an foe and blinded stops pretty much all spells from working. sure you can give immunity to those conditions, but you are doing essential the same thing as legendary resistances just now permanently. that's why many homebrews statblocks focus on making legendary resistances an satisfying/fun to go up against rather than outright removing them. this doesn't fix the issue, but you can't really fix it without redesigning a lot of 5e from the ground or nerfing your players a lot. And to be honest it can be satisying to remove legendary resistances from creatures, it's almost like a secondary healthbar. it can be frustrating? Yes, very much, but it can be also fun to finally nail a good debuff after a couple tries, since it feels like you earned it I agree it's not a great system, but i feel it's not as bad a many people make it out to be. Still I can understand your point of view.

@@bonewizard not a character but the Haki system. Everyone can learn haki but they have to have a teacher, where as haki master monks slowly get haki features on top of being able to learn

@@bonewizard I were introduced in late T3 or early T4 (level 14 or 16 to be specific) and we did use 2nd edition crit tables. So not quite the raw or standard table. A lot of players at the table got various bonuses or powers. By far the best campaign I ever played!

I've always fantasized about an NPC or group of NPCs using Quivering Palm to blackmail a low-to-mid-level party into taking on a quest. A version that doesn't require a Saving Throw when used on a low enough HP target would be fantastic.

My dm and I using his improved base monk changes redid the four elements monk to be a blend of Ghost of Tsushima stances and avatar as a model. You unlock a new elemental stance at 3 (you start with 2 stances), 6, and 11 and each having their own benefits relating to that element along with some new disciplines/spells related to those elements such as being able to extend the reach and adding a wisdom mod for fire or cold damage from melee attacks in Fire/Water Stance, having shape *blank* element as cantrips that cost nothing and a wind blade as a ranged attack cantrip for air

yeah open hand is the straight translation of the monk abilities from 3.5, sub classes were not a thing so you had to take other levels in prestige class to be 'unique' not that you'd want to play a monk because they were a terrible class in 3.5 too unfortunatly.

On quivering palm, on the new version, I would have added on giving the target 1 level of exhaustion on a failed save. Reason being, when vibrations end in a person's body, it takes a ton out of a person (assuming they live). As a dancer, when you get dancing, you are causing minor vibrations in your own body, admittedly much more minor. But if you dance for too long, you do tire yourself out, but it does depend on how much stamina, aka constitution, you have when you stop. That's why I recommend a level of exhaustion only on a failed save, since you were able to withstand the vibration in your body. Originally, I thought a level on a successful save and 2 on a failed save, but that might be too busted.
