Psychologists study how people differ. It turns out that liberals are more open to experiences, while conservatives are more conscientious.
That shows itself in professional differences:
The vast majority of artists are Democrats, while business owners are usually Republicans.
Most bartenders are Democrats, truck drivers Republicans.
Most psychiatrists are Democrats, soldiers Republicans.
Rob Henderson tries to explain why.

I grew up surrounded by violence, went homeless in my early 20s and had to quit college (I leaned left back in those days), then I realized that waiting for politicians to help me was a waste of time, so then I learned English by myself and started working as translator and now editor for Spanish translations, working and finding my own way out of my situation was the only thing I could do to help myself, so, because of my experiences I could never lean left again, that is behind me in my days of naivety. Oh I'm honduran by the way and I live in my country, now I'm able to take care of my parents that thanks to God are still with me.

The left uses the minorities for votes and once they’re in, the drop the smalls and go make themselves big. Ive seen the left effect people in my own life (specifically this regi- i mean administration) financially. My girl friend (at the time) and her family went homeless due to not being able to keep up with the now constantly rising cost of living as a whole. They had a bunch of unfortunate health issues (a brain tumor) and they are a family of 5 with only 1 adult working making around 60-70k most likely. This administration gave them a stimulus check, and that’s why a lot of people will vote for specific candidates (for the money), and they dont really tend to think about how it will effect them long term. Bottom line, Liberals and Democratics have no cares when it comes to effecting peoples lives long term, we were the only family that let them stay in our home (for over 2 months) until they moved up to stay with extended family. I will never forgive those who harmed such innocent and loving people all because they’re “wAnTiNg cHaNgE.” F the system.

Because libs have a monopoly on entertainment. After years of exploiting this advantage to denigrate, shame and sabotage conservatives for their views, actual conservatives are too terrified of being labelled whatever-phobe or -ist of the week to assert their values. The other issue is the fact that conservatives have been cornered into the 'muh small government' trap, believing that any exercise of government power is somehow a betrayal of conservative values and makes us 'just like them', thus when people vote people running on conservative values into government, they refuse to exercise the power they were given by the vote to implement actual conservative policies. It's high-time they realize it's us or them. They have to start actively asserting conservatives values, none of this 'I'm not this-phobic, but...', no 'I'm not saying they shouldn't be allowed to do this, but...' If they refuse to use the powers they were given, the opposition will and they won't be coy about it. They'll legislate you out of existence. 'Tolerance' of evil is subservience to evil.

I wish I had a $1 for every time “Why should I work when I can get welfare?” was asked. So, I’ve seen it from both sides. Having grown up on the “Wrong side of the tracks” I often heard people in my social circles express nothing but contempt for people with money. And by people with money I mean anyone who had even A LITTLE BIT MORE! It was always assumed that “those people” got their money by lying, cheating, stealing, and standing on the backs of the poor. And if they didn’t, they were just plain lucky and they inherited it. The first election I ever voted in was Reagan versus Carter. Governor Reagan at the time was commenting on the growing phenomenon of women who were divorcing their husbands or not even marrying the men they made children with. Not because they no longer loved them but because they could get welfare as single mothers. Reagan said (Paraphrased) the destruction of the American family could lead to the destruction of America. I told my mother that what Mr. Reagan said made sense and she replied with “IF YOU VOTE FOR REAGAN DON’T BOTHER COMING HOME!” When my family knew I went full on conservative I was told “YOUR FATHER IS ROLLING OVER IN HIS GRAVE!” To which I replied “Yeah? My theory is that if your job depends on economic success of the country you tend to lean right and if economic success of the country doesn't matter to your job, you lean left. I find it interesting how there are loads of professors who have never worked professionally in the field they teach. That's a big issue in my opinion because the real world is much more complex and messy than the theories are on paper. Someone who has been successful in a field has a much more impressive reputation than someone who has been in academia for the same amount of time. The reason professors can be so open and explore wild ideas is because they aren't concerned about the constraints that exist in the real world. That openness is the issue because their ideas are literally useless if they aren't practical. Ideas that are impractical are less than useful because they can actually be expensive and harmful to try. Practicality is the number one requirement for any idea and yet it's the least important factor to someone who's never had the threat of bankruptcy looming over their plans.

My sociology teacher always had an open floor because the school I went to had a lot of conservative people due to the area. Needless to say tho nobody was ever prepared to actually debate an issue with him. They’d just disagree and fumble through it with no actual substance besides the fact that it’s just how they lean politically. Like you can’t argue a free market healthcare solution is best because capitalism is inherently always best when it’s demonstrably false in that area. If there is profit on the table, that means money will be lost towards profit when it could be spent on care. All you have to do is look across the world to find out single payer systems simply work better.

That’s objectively not true. I can pull up examples of people on both sides committing politically motivated terror attacks. I can pull up examples of horrendous rhetoric from politicians and “journalists” from both sides often attacking ideas rather than people. I live in Wisconsin. I’ve seen far more political ads “x is too extreme for Wisconsin vote y” or “x did this in the past” or I haven’t seen one ad putting out actual policy positions of their candidate let alone things they’ve done. I’ve seen people on both sides, in real life and across the internet (hell in this comment section alone there’s so many prime examples) of people attacking not only the politicians but also people who vote for certain politicians they don’t like. Most politicians are corrupt. They don’t do shit for the country. In their “ideals” they exhibit insane levels of hypocrisy. They have no morals or palatable platforms to stand on anymore so they spread attacks and hate. These attacks and hate trickle down to the media which amplifies it with misleading and downright false claims about “the end of democracy” or “they’re trying to silence you” they continuously play advantageous inflammatory hit pieces and hire partisan hacks to desperately try to keep eyes glued to the screen. The rhetoric from the media and politicians then trickles down to the voters. Now we have lawn sign wars, political terror attacks, disgusting amounts of vandalism and graffiti and distrust and hatred towards anyone who thinks differently. I can bring up stories to back these claims, but anyone following politics closely and is not brainwashed past the point of no return can easily recognize “their guy/gal” doing this.

Hard to talk to the other side, when the other side rejects reason. When one side declares that reality is subjective, no conversation is possible. The emergence of phrases like "my truth" and "your truth" have irreparably stopped the conversation. We will only be able to start the conversation again when people finally understand there is only one truth, and it can be objectively known. Until then, society will continue to disintegrate and the descent into chaos and darkness will accelerate.

I was a teacher in Baltimore's inner city when I began reading classical liberal thinkers after watching Stossel's interview with Milton Friedman. The ideas encapsulated in those essays and books explained so many of the problems I saw around me. Over the next few years I moved from progressive Democrat to libertarian, and where I've remained for two decades, and wow it's lonely to have my views in this profession (and I teach social studies to boot). There are very few conservative or libertarian teachers who will say anything about their views in or out of the classroom, and it's gotten worse over the past decade.

I find the surest correlator of your political party is how much you associate hard work with success. If you work construction, or mining, or are in the military, you can directly see the results of hard work and doing things the "right" way, thus be more conservative. When you work as a teacher, a scientist, or an artist the relationship between your work and your success is a little more abstract, so you're less likely to see ther relationship and think of success as more of an arbitrary thing that some people get and others don't, leaning more liberal.

I was 8 years old in 1967 watching the events that were occurring around me. Unlike most kids I was encouraged to watch the news on tv and read newspapers. My parents were registered as independents through out their lives. They were not fans of the Kennedy family. With the civil rights movement going on and Martin Luther King prominent in the news I was exposed first hand to the different viewpoints. At the dinner table we discussed business, investments, and current events. I never once heard a racial slur in my household...ever! I probably wasn't a typical kid at that time. I wasn't into the Beatles or the Monkees. I chose Star Trek and Batman over Lost in Space. I fell in love with blues and roots music before I was of school age. I took the time to hear who was saying what about the civil rights, the protests, Vietnam, etc. I thought that there was a general sense of hatred toward the people fighting to be equal. As this went on with politics becoming more newsworthy as part of all this the people with the hateful and unbending language and attitudes were all democrats. It seemed they were fighting to keep schools and neighborhoods segregated, and were running campaigns of keeping some people down from being equal. The anger and violence was putting me off. Just as the anger in the democratic party is going today. I knew by my 9th birthday that I had nothing in common with democrats. I've held that sense ever since and doubt I could ever change. I'm not hostile about it. I have friends that are very liberal but I tend to show them the holes in their beliefs. I've been successful in bringing many people into the light...awakening their sense of country and constitution. I firmly believe the best way to help people is to teach them how to help themselves. Education, hard work, family, common sense, and always stay happy. Liberalism seems to stem from hate and anger that spirals down a hole to destruction and despair.

If you listen to both sides you will hear this, the right (not ultra right or the wackos), don't say just because you SAY something that they don't like or disagree with (unless it is defamatory or slanderous) that you should be fired, lose your career, etc. They say that the market will decide if you will succeed. That you actually have to DO something wrong or illegal to even ask for their termination. But not the left, They never learned the old children's saying, of "stick & stones". They say WORDS are violence. I am an independent & am old enough to remember being in the south and having family have to drive 100 miles out of the way to AVOID certain roads because of where you'd be traveling through. My favourite was that any evidence that you possessed that countered their narrative had to be 'sociologically informed'. In other words you could not quote a forensic pathologist to undermine their 'race does not exist biologically, it is solely a social construct' dogma. You had to find a sociologist who agreed with that view, and as the example shown in the video, sociologists are almost all signed up to this viewpoint/agenda. Truth, scientific, biological truth did not matter, only truth delivered by 'one of us'. This also meant that you could not quote an economist to refute their 'Sweden is utopia because it is socialist/progressive' views. This despite Karl Marx being considered a founding and important 'sociologist' which is tendentious.

I think it's also worth noting that where you live could have a big impact on what political party you likely align with. Take a look at any election map by county instead of state and you will see a lot of red and small pockets of blue. Those high population density blue pockets generally align with the location of the largest 1 or 2 cities in every state. Essentially do you live in a major city or do you not seems to also be a large factor that gets ignored too often in my opinion, as vastly different living conditions of the areas leads to different priorities and needs.
@johnmoore1495

Ehh, while it’s true now it has flipped and can easily flip. Rural America used to be very blue and college educated city people tended to be Republican despite the parties still standing for similar priorities in the present day in terms of economics. We’ve just created a culture war over the last 30-40 years, but especially the last 10, that had made the division very stark and somehow rural America ended up republicans and city America ended up with democrats. It wasn’t that long ago that New York City had a Republican mayor.

Rural urban divide may be one of the biggest factors now. It’s so hard to believe that bush actually won 4/10 of the biggest cities in 2000. That will never happen again. @@TheTaysoren that perfectly encapsulates the feeling. big city people like government intervention and spending because if things go to hell the only thing they can count on in often dangerous city conditions is government assistance or regulations against guns or unfair business practice, while rural folks hate the taxes and regulations on guns or other things and feel like they get comparably less from the gov they then put in

It's relatively easy to affect state and national elections when you concentrate corrupt practices in high population areas. Look at the "turnout" in Milwaukee in 2020, over 80%: 30% higher than usual there, and 30% higher than pretty much everywhere in the country except for strategic blue counties in swing states. Why bother with representing rural areas when you can just overwhelm them with fake votes in high population areas you control forever with the same local strategy?

How is it reality? The two major groups are not totally incompatible. No amount of talking is going to solve the gaps that used to be bridged by the founding libertarian principles. Stay out of my pocket and stay out of my business. While both sides have been openly violating that for over 100 years now the left now openly shuns those ideals as everything from racist to authoritarian. They've totally lost the plot and their minds and the founders would see them as an enemy. So do I. I'm done with these people. You don't get to label every bad word under the sun and then somehow roll that back. We either figure out how to go back to a robust system of States' Rights or we will have a war. One side wants to give power back to states and shrink the size of the federal government and the other wants all power to be with the federal government. Can't have both. Which is ironic considering it was Democrats with sanctuary cities and cannabis laws that told the government to duck off. That's actually the path forward. Live in a state that mirrors your beliefs and where accountable power is closer to home. Not thousands of miles away.
