Government Creates the Baby Formula Shortage

Politicians blame “corporate greed” for the formula shortage. But it’s their own destructive policies that are to blame.

To make sure you see the new weekly video from Stossel TV, sign up here: www.johnstossel.com/#subscribe
----
Why is there a formula shortage?
It’s not Covid shipping delays. Capitalism works. Other supermarket shelves are filled.
“It’s clearly government policy that’s causing the biggest problems,” says trade specialist Scott Lincicome from the Cato Institute.
You would never know it if you listened to the media. They focus on the company that voluntarily recalled some formula, Abbott Nutrition.
The real reasons for the shortage are actually worse than you think.
“We have a tariff and regulatory wall around the country,” says Lincicome.
So babies and parents suffer.
I explain in the video above.

DEA officer stops at a ranch in Texas and talks with an old rancher. He tells the rancher, "I need to inspect your ranch for illegally grown drugs." The rancher says, "Okay, but do not go in that field over there," as he points out the location. The DEA officer verbally explodes saying, "Mister, I have the authority of the Federal Government with me." Reaching into his rear pants pocket, he removes his badge and proudly displays it to the rancher. "See this badge? This badge means I am allowed to go wherever I wish... On any land. No questions asked or answer given. Have I made myself clear? Do you understand? " The rancher nods politely, apologizes, and goes about his chores. A short time later, the old rancher hears loud screams and sees the DEA officer running for his life chased by the rancher's big Santa Gertrudis Bull... With every step, the bull is gaining ground on the officer, and it seems likely that he'll get gored before he reaches safety. The officer is clearly terrified. The rancher throws down his tools, runs to the fence, and yells at the top of his lungs..."Your badge... Show him your badge!"

I wondered why Canada didn't just sell a bunch of formula to the USA. Then I found out that in Canada there is also a baby formula crisis. Canada Royal Milk is a company that makes baby formula and is owned by the Chinese company Feihe International Inc. and has received Canadian government funding to the tune of $225 million (paid for by CANADIAN TAX PAYERS). It currently ships ALL of its product to China because it is not ALLOWED to sell the formula in Canada. I guess Chinese babies don't require the same sort of regulations that Canadian babies do.

When my son was born we were well able to provide for him, while in the hospital we were visited by WIC employees who wanted us to sign up even though we told them we didn’t need it they were very persistent with multiple visits we saw them approach other newborn parents and most of them took them up for the ‘free” formula. A few of the parents were kind of embarrassed they took it when it wasn’t needed. WIC wasn’t there to help people in need they were there to prop up their numbers so the stats showed they were needed.

I don't know if it's changed since I used it 23 years ago, but you're not required to buy everything they offer and it was strictly income based, though higher amount than food stamps. It provides milk, beans, fruit juice, cereal, and several other things other than just formula. Mine were formula due to medications and health issues with me and I was on food stamps at the time because we were waiting on my husband's green card approval (I had to move back from Canada to care for my mother who was facing a 6 month surgery recovery and grandmother with breast cancer). Other than amount or price, I wasn't regulated to specific brands.,That was a bit before the WIC approved signs showed up in stores and when only certain stores took it.

As a Wisconsinite, I know about 90% of our milk goes to make cheese. We also produce more milk than all of Canada. Our farmers were at one point producing so much milk that a bunch of it had to be dumped because they couldn’t find a use for it. Why more of our milk isn’t used to make baby formula is beyond me! California dairy farmers are wards of the state.

I am Venezuelan, in 1995 when I was studying in high school I did a social investigation, studying a social problem, its causes, origin and possible solutions, I chose education, I was absolutely amazed at what I found, even my teacher stayed with the mouth open and made me present the research to a meeting of teachers. It turns out that my country, Venezuela had a higher budget per student than the United States, at that time the United States invested 1,320 dollars per student in basic and secondary education per month, Venezuela invested 1,380 dollars, I could not believe it because in Venezuela the schools they are dilapidated, most of the time without toilets, water or electricity, and teachers were often paid late or paid every 2-3 months. The answer was given to me by the Ministry of Education itself, 45% of the national budget for education was used to pay officials of the Ministry of Education, about 30% direct VAT to universities, about 15% was used to pay teachers and the remaining 10% to building maintenance and professional development. This is a sample of the inept government, when an official is useless or inept, they don't fire him, they hire another, in the end they have to dedicate the money to pay people who don't do anything useful.

Remember, the current crisis was triggered by the shutdown of the Abbott baby formula plant in Sturgis, Michigan. That shutdown was ordered by the FDA after a whistleblower reported unsanitary production facilities there, and after several babies got infected with unusual bacteria with two dying after exposure to formula produced at that plant. That is an argument for more oversight, not less.

When government gets involved, they screw things up. The factory that was closed, didn't need to shut down for more than a week, because it passed inspection and it wasn't to blame for the children that died. Government is almost always the problem.

THIS. The fact that the FDA continues to wait to inspect and approve a facility to return to normal production and distribution AFTER no illness or death being linked to said facility proves the govt will use even the most vulnerable of society to try and keep us all in check.

Keep in mind the fundamental problem noted in the story: the dairy industry has too much influence on our laws and regulations. This problem came to a head when the Abbott plant in Sturgis, Michigan was found to have unsanitary production facilities, allegedly leading to severe illness in some babies including two deaths. It was shut down by the food safety division of the FDA, a division that has been underfunded for years. The baby formula crisis only emphasizes the need for competition in the formula market, but anti-trust law and the application of that law in the US has been weakened in recent decades. Notably, in recent years and particularly since the tax reform passed during the last presidential administration, Abbott has been extremely profitable, allowing it to authorize massive stock buybacks worth $3 billion in 2019 and $5 billion last year. Those funds increased their share prices, but could have been better spent upgrading the quality of their manufacturing in Sturgis.

80-90% of _"news"_ stations get their "news" from the same data source. Often the _"news reporters"_ read the same script verbatim, regardless of what station you tune into. Very few investigative journalists exist nowadays. The big "news" media outlets cannot just take what John Stossel (and team) have researched, and report as if it's their own.

Nice to see a new Stossel video! I've already commented the cause for this under numerous videos about this same topic / food shortage related in general, but my personal belief is: the shortage is due to the fact 3 companies control 98% of the market for baby formula in the US, and the state enables this monopoly by purchasing from these companies and funneling them through a program called "WIC," and making it hard for any competition to sprout through strict regulations. Some economically illiterate folks, such as Hassan Piker, have pointed the finger at capitalism. When in reality, under socialism, the state would seize the baby formula market and have full control over it. Free market capitalism, and allowing competitors would solve this issue. In Canada, we don't have a shortage (afaik), because there's MANY formula companies + we allow foreign imports.

The State didn't enable the monopoly; it CREATED it. The government could have told the businesses that wanted more market share to let the market decide. The government could tell lobbyists to buzz off and make a better product if they want more business. The government could have made the FDA go back to doing what it was supposed to be doing: inspecting for safety, not defining it.

Here’s a topic. Food banks. In the UK I’m always reading about families going to food banks being on the rise and how bad that means things are. They’ve even portrayed it in the media being akin to begging. That these places are places no one should ever have to go to. Granted it’s not a place anyone would want to be, However I get the feeling it’s because they’re not government run, and as a result the government doesn’t get to spin it as “we helped feed the poor” so the media and government moan that using food banks is unacceptable. But what is acceptable is the government using their powers to then levy a tax or increase welfare to stop the usage of these places. Like that solves the issue. The way I see it. Anyone can end up in a bad spot. They may have higher wages than most of the poor, but have financial obligations they can’t back out of without severe repercussions, so they used a food bank to make ends meet one month. Using a good bank doesn’t require government approval. It’s down to the food bank who gets what. They get their items from donations. Stores donate too (dented cans of beans and the like). Instead the government would wish we be taking money from their hands that they stole from the working people.

Government welfare is used by politicians to buy votes. Food banks don't serve people in exchange for votes. The government (and their media allies) encourage people to go to the government instead of food banks.

I've seen them report use of them is up in the US, but more as away to say financially things aren't good and to increase donations because they are running low. Then again, the politicans know better than to try to push increase in welfare when the population is hurting because that's a good way to lose an election.

This has become such a horrible situation. My daughter had to switch my granddaughter from high calorie to regular formula after I had to get on Amazon to send her high calorie and that was around Christmas. Now she can't even find regular formula and Amazon can't help me save her. The doctor's office gave her four small trial cans but clearly that didn't last long. Thankfully baby girl is ten months old and eating solids and we found a goat's milk based toddler formula, with an added calorie booster and a daily multivitamin to make up for the difference between baby and toddler formula. If I have to, I know where I can get me a pregnant goat that'll be good for milking in the really near future. This is ridiculous.
