I worked in the operating room as a nurse circulator with vascular surgeons who create fistulas and grafts for dialysis patients. I’ve also worked with transplant surgeons and have seen multiple kidney transplants. I used to have nightmares about renal failure. My heart goes out to everyone dealing with it, those waiting on the transplant list, and those who’ve rejected a kidney transplant 💚💚💚💚

Same here but was a surgical assistant on the harvest side of the process. I’ve spent countless hours starting my shift at midnight and working through the morning harvesting and preparing organs for transport. It’s an amazing machine when everything goes smoothly. To be able to retrieve an organ in south Florida then have it flown to New York or elsewhere was always amazing to me.

I am six years out from a kidney transplant. I was on peritoneal dialysis for many years and hemodialysis for a few. I am healthier now than I have ever been because I am in compliance with my doctors' orders, I eat healthy, drink plenty of water (64oz per day,) and exercise regularly. Those are the things we should all be doing, not just transplant recipients. Please take care of your kidneys! Please talk with your family about organ donation if/when you pass away! (Check the box when you renew your license or State ID.) Here is a fun fact which was left out of this video: if you only have one kidney due to a birth defect or transplant, that one kidney will grow larger and do the work of two fully functioning kidneys.

They didn’t do ultrasounds when I was born, I was always healthy, and never had the need for any tests before last month. I just always assumed I had two like everyone else. Turns out 1 in 750 to 1 in 2,000 people are born with only one kidney. I’ve been told now my life expectancy should still be normal.

Thank you for this video, my mom is on dialysis now and it helped explain some of the non-filtering things I didn't realize they do. She is on peritoneal dialysis which is a really cool setup and works really good for her. If anyone here is on hemo dialysis or has a loved one that is, I would definitely talk to your doctor about it because you can do it daily and at home. People, take good care of your kidneys, the effects I saw because of the toxin accumulation was just terrible. Itching that wouldn't go away, being super tired, just generally feeling horrible.

Interesting how this more detailed explanation filling in "it filters blood and creates urine" that I already knew at 10:15 suddenly also explains something I else I can vaguely remember. Had to get a series of weekly EPO injections and supplemental iron prior to surgery, to boost the hemaglobin a bit prior to a total hip replacement surgery. The piece of paper that came with the injection needles was mostly about kidney disease. Pretty sure it was also used as a hard to detect form of doping in the cycling sport, was mentioned in the news about it quite often some years ago unless there's yet another substance called EPO out there.

Most bestest awesomest explanation! (Willing to sacrifice my grammar for you.) I remember learning a lot about the heart, the digestive system, the liver, etc. in school, but when it came to the kidneys, it was basically saying briefly what it does ("filters the blood" was usually about it; nothing about the link with blood pressure, vitamin D, etc.) but not how it does it or how important it is to take good care of your kidneys. I don't know if the teachers were just afraid of all the pee jokes or because there was so much to unpack, but I always found it odd that such a crucial and amazing organ would be so neglected. Question: why do people with high blood pressure show high levels of proteinuria and/or creatinine, which can then disappear when the blood pressure goes back to normal (either naturally, or with treatment)? Is it just that the increased blood pressure just pushing and jamming those bigger molecules through the capillaries or is there another explanation?

Most medical providers will include a complete metabolic panel (CMP) in yearly physicals, which does include some tests to evaluate kidney function, but obviously if you have specific concerns you would want to discuss those with your medical.

What impact does losing one kidney have overall on the remaining kidney's ability to function, or the rest of the body?

Hi. I have had my one transplanted kidney for just over 20 yrs. My nephrologist told me it could last 10 more years. Even though I’ve been diagnosed with CKD (stage 3), my kidney seems to be handling everything as well as possible.

I had my right kidney removed 28yrs ago. I was 21. I was told, the life expectancy of the left was cut in half due to having double the work load. I do not live the healthiest of lifestyles & typically will only go to a Dr. if I have too. I was having issues earlier this year. Bc of my history scans & test for kidney function were done. Happy to say my left kidney is doing the job & still functioning @ 100%. Knock on wood. Idk how my life would differ having both kidneys, as i've been living with just the one for so long now & do not feel limited in my abilities at all. My body has not missed a beat. The human body is such a miraculous machine, i am blessed. Hope this kind of helps you out as i'm sure there are variable factors. ❤Always
