Except of course that there was no such "existing homeland". Palestine was notoriously unfertile and depopulated in the 19th century. The Arabs of Palestine were, well, Arabs. And there is even an Arab state populated mostly by said Arabs of Palestinian descent. It is called Jordan, and was carved out of the Palestinian Mandate by the British as a consolation prize for Faisal, as the Shariff of Mecca had lost the Hijaz to the House of Saud. There's the irony. There is already a Palestinian Arab state. The Hashemites are the outsiders, but nobody talks about it.

British did a similar thing in Ireland. Settled their people in the north which made it very hard to separate the country after the civil war. They didn’t give us back the last 6 counties which led to decades of war and hate. The British have a lot to answer for in many parts of the world.

What's really important to note is that this is not very long ago. When we talk about Churchill in history, it's presented as a topic fairly close to us, but when speaking of the Jewish Palestine conflict people tend to say it's been going on forever. It's presented as something far away in time as to legitimize the eternity of it.

@@LimitBreakr424 Under Ottoman Empire it was allowed some Jewish people to move in and buy land which some chose to escape antisemitism in Europe. It is likely at that point a Jewish settlement wasn't seen as a menace to the area since they couldn't possibly disobey or take over the Ottoman Empire and neither would have reasons to since, as I said, they were offering an area for them to escape to. All of this changed once England took over post WW1. My information on this is not that detailed though. It would need more information for specifics.

The Palestinian leaders have been offered a state and many other concessions since Churchill's death... each time they turn away and resort to violence. Then they grab hostages, in case they lose and they need to bargain for their lives. ps- Unless you're blonde and blue eyed, Churchill is one of many you owe for not living under a tyrant

You really should continue this series, covering the entire history of the conflict. This part was very well researched, but is only the tip of the iceberg. I would love it if a massive, 10 hour docu series covering the whole cobflict in the same detail was out there to point people to.

All of the major allied countries in WW1 controlled Ottoman land after the empire dissolved. The Ottomans also caused lots of havoc in the middle east and the Balkans.

But the aggressor between those had always been each other failing to maintain stable diplomatic relations. The Arabs were left unbothered and any troubles with the Arabs was caused by the Arabs themselves, not the ottomans It's thanks to Ottoman influence in the region that many colonizers were kicked off like the Portuguese who made colonies in the south of Arabia. There's also the fact that the British were able to make colonies in Arabia thanks to the Ottomans being weakened over centuries Even the Mamluks preferred ottoman rule over Napoleon's rule

This content is even more relevant today. In re-viewing this, it struck me how some of these early Zionists' ideas carried through the years, notably the walls around Gaza, isolating them from the rest of the region and the world. It is a lie to suggest that there was no existing Arab culture in Palestine, before Jewish mass immigration. There were banks, railways, and industry. Jaffa was a thriving port. Most of the fertile land is in the coastal plain, and north of the land, which was given to Israel.

This reminded me of some talk with a cab driver from Palestine who emigrated to another part of the world. I asked when it could be peace in that area and he answered ... Never. I again asked why and he said ... To many things have gone wrong in a to long time who have affected many people for generations on many sides in that war and those things are nearly impossible to stop. Yes, its sad he continued but sometimes i guess that when things go to far for decades and decades you stop to see a solution. Only missery left.

All the Arabs had to do was to either submit to authority or move away. There are plenty who are earning big within Israel, despite being Arabs. From Jordan to Morocoo, all majorities are Arab, so tell me who is getting threatened with extinction and who inhabits more land? It is like having ethnic Russians in Ukraine ask for Russian intervention due to feeling unsafe in Ukraine, when in fact, they have no place in Ukraine to begin with.

3:56 The newspaper was called Falastin, which is Arabic for Palestine. Alternate Arabic pronunciations are Filistin and Filastin. My Palestinian family use Falastin, while others may use Filistin. Oh, and Palestinian as an Arab Muslim/Christian Identity goes back to the 10th Century.

11th century not 10th and it was used very few times, and those who did do it were typically shuned by the rest of the local arab academic class who preffered to identify as either syrian or al-shami, most people didnt identify with much beyond their familiel tribe up until very recently, the national identity started to pickup only in the inter war period between ww1 and 2 as a reaction to larger jewish immigration and zionism.

The main issue here is that Palestine population was overwhelmingly made up of ethnic arabs , who were gradually displaced by jewish migrants in a process that was forced upon them with no consideration for their opinion. It was not a negotiated process , and thus it could not end well. I actually admire Israel culture and traditions, and dont feel connected at all to arab civilization, and also think that terrorism is never an acceptable answer whatever the context. But facts are facts, and the process that led to the formation of the Israel state was not fair.

I am amazed by how well Mr. Alexander pronounces everything so well. It shows how dedicated to his craft he is. Truly a remarkable for someone to take such care in his words and the names he shares like they were his own. I would like to know more about the French at Gallipoli. We all have heard about the Anzacs, but i have heard basically nothing about the French who had more men and equipment there than any other group outside of the Ottomans.

einstein was a big supporter of the zionist movement, he was even offered the second presidency of the state of israel right after chaim weizmann, but he refused because he considered himself a man of science and wanted nothing to do with politics. He even gave many lectures in the hebrew university of jerusalem!

@@stylicho No evidence or mention of any such document with relation to Palestine You're referring to an 1844 note in which the Ottomans promised the British and French to not execute suspected apostates from Islam across their empire It's the Baháʼí community that coined this note as the "Edict of Toleration" bcoz they believe it has prophetic significance

It is with a view to its own interest, that we address to it this demand. The Porte must not delude itself with regard to the elements now in a state of fermentation in Turkey. Instead of alienation from itself the feelings of the Christina population, the Ottoman Government ought more than ever to labor to conciliate them to itself.” The magnitude of the question is thus forcibly stated, February 22, 1844, by the Turkish minister. “No fresh step was requisite to make us sensible of the importance of this question, with which we are deeply impressed. We are dealing with it with all the seriousness and all the care which its gravity requires. Yes, what your respective chiefs say is true; this question has its political as also its religious side. It is requisite, in fact, that we should separate ourselves from the nation, or otherwise from the Christian Powers; those are two great evils to be equally avoided. The Sultan has commanded that this question shall be discussed in the council of Oulemas, which will be opened on next Saturday, at the Sheik-ul-Islam’s, to which the Gazi-Askes and the other principal persons among the men of the law will be summoned; after which the council of ministers will again apply themselves to it. Do not suppose, however, that we have confined ourselves to direct their attention, purely and simply, to the question as it regards religion; we have likewise submitted to them the protocols of the conferences, the despatches of the two Governments, and even the extract of the newspapers which have discussed this question and we shall likewise communicate to them the instruction which you have just delivered to me, and which, although superfluous as far as the Porte is concerned, may still add to the impression produced by the other documents in their hands.” In communication the Queen’s approbation, April 19, 1844, to Sir Stratford Canning, Lord Aberdeen ends the correspondence with these words, “You have brought to a successful close a question of which the importance cannot be too highly rated,” Even will show the truth of these words. The Porte, even on the 14th of March, 1844, would have put off the European Powers with a statement that the law did not admit of any change; but such measures as were possible should be taken. The Ambassadors of the European Powers refused to receive this. At length, on the 21st of March, 1844, the question of religious execution was, as our Ambassador observes, “happily and, to all appearance, conclusively settled. The concession has been obtained with great difficulty by your lordship’s instructions, to overcome the obstacles which were raised against us.” He enclosed in this letter the following “Official Declaration of the Sublime Porte, relinquishing the practice of Executions for Apostasy.”

I've got to go in tomorrow to get a tooth extracted & and I've got a lot of anxiety, this was one of the things I watched to help. As an uninsured working class American, my anxiety is not only about possible pain and discomfort, but the huge amount one tooth pulled is taking out of my paycheck, and how I will fare losing my last back molar to chew with- i can't even afford a bridge or implant. This speaker addressed the human and psychological aspect of the dental visit very well, but it will take a big shift in healthcare and economic policy to address the financial anxiety and many in the u.s. coping with affordability just to be able to address debtal issues.

His research on acetone was instrumental in supporting the British war effort because acetone was needed for the production of explosives. Chaim Weizmann's work was unrelated to the development or deployment of chemical weapons.

10'19'' - The phrase used in 1921 was "economic apartheid"? The word "apartheid" is from the Afrikaans language and describes the political regime in South Africa established in the 40s. Did the Afrikaans word make it into English even before the actual "apartheid"?

The man who wrote that letter, General Louis Jean Bols, was actually born in South Africa before he became a solider in British Palestine. The Afrikaans language had been developing for a while at that point, even if the word Apartheid was not popularized until later. It's not crazy to think he knew of the word before it was a popular international term since he grew up where the word was formed.

A Google Books search shows that the sentence: "This policy of 'economic apartheid' was bound to strengthen the resistance of Arabs to Jewish immigration" comes from a book published in 1965: Norman Bentwich, ‎Helen Bentwich, 'Mandate Memories, 1918-1948,' p. 53. Unfortunately, there's only a Snippet View so I cannot see if this is a direct quote or narrative. I would guess the latter.

It simply means "apartness" or "aparthood," and did not accrue a negative meaning until 1948, when it was adopted by the South African government as a euphemistic name for their racist laws. According to Wiktionary, the word first appeared in a South African socio-political context in 1929, so it is most unlikely to have been used as a term of criticism in 1921 Palestine. That doesn't mean there wasn't apartheid back then - simply that the word for it didn't yet exist. Just as the Palestinians were ethnically cleansed in 1948, but the phrase ethnic-cleansing didn't come into use until it was used (again, initially euphemistically) in the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s.

Well there is Oren's channel. Its called traveling Isreal. He is Israeli so there is obviously a little bias but he is really just trying to stay with facts and history and expressing his opinions in a clear way so you would know that this part is his perspective

Another excellent episode from a great team that can always be counted on to present the facts, the nuances, and the multifaceted roots of a conflict. I'm glad that you avoided taking any "side" (and, as you showed, there are more than just two involved), but chose to present just how difficult and, at times,the seemingly irreconcilable nature of the entire situation in a fully objective manner. This is no mean feat, and it's why I always check out your videos here and on Real Time History.

At any rate, I noticed what seems to be a mistake in the narration at 9:05 where it is stated that "72 thousand square kilometers" where purchased from the Sursok family. 72k SQ KM is a lot of SQ KMs for a country that is only 22 thousand SQ KM.

What percentage of Palestinian Muslims would have even considered an extranational or two-state solution in 1921? I've always felt the only lasting solution would be to make the holy cities an extranational neutral zone governed by an international body, because it's pretty obvious that whoever takes control of the region eventually becomes oppressively theocratic and divisive.

Thank you Mr. Alexander. You quoted Prince Faisal's hope of a peaceful arrangement. Perhaps if Europeans were more humble and less imperialist, Peace could have prevailed in the Holy Land of Father Abram/Abraham and his sons, Ishmael and Isaac. May it be so.

@@hachwarwickshire292 the business had several shops and was started by some Jewish brothers from New York. The Palestinian guy bought into one on the new shops. He was really nice but the Jewish guy unfortunately fit a lot of stereotypes. I worked their for about 3 months baking bagels and opened up the place in the morning until I had an episode with crack cocaine and just didn't come in one day. It was pretty fucked. Anyway, the Palestinian guy was really compassionate about it which made me feel more guilty while the Jewish owner layer into me about what a schmuck I was as muck aa he could while he fired me. I could care less about him because he really was a schmuck in so many ways I won't get into. He ended up having a stroke, sold all his businesses and apparently changed his perspective on life.
