I was a hospital social worker during the worst of the AIDS years. The song "Philadelphia" really nailed it both musically and lyrically.. This interview was the perfect company for a long drive across the desert when I tuned in. It was a real treat to hear the story and feel the humanity behind the celebrity. The pureness of the music connected well with the dialog in a non scripted setting, as well. Howard was the right person for this honor to share the life of an American legend with all of us.

As Howard said in the interview, it seems a lot of people had one parent who might not think they could amount to much in life. As one who grew up in the 1960s, another person that I think would have been a fascinating interview (if still alive) would be Sonny Bono. He said in his 1992 autobiography that his dad never told him or his 2 sisters that he loved them & he was close to his mom. Sonny said he always made sure he told his kids that he loved them. He also had to start at the bottom because he never learned to read music but wrote 10 Gold records & 5 Top 10 songs. He just had the determination to make it work. He wrote the song "Laugh At Me" in a day & played on the radio the next day because of bullying treatment he & Cher got at a restaurant. Both Bruce seems & Sonny seemed humble & accomplished in life's endeavors.

The first concert I saw was Bruce circa 1978. It was the Darkness on the Edge of Town tour. I really wasn't familiar with him but a good friend was a fan and took me along. He played for over 3 hours till the band literally carried him off stage. I was in awe. Almost 50 years and hundreds of concerts later I've never been to a better or more impactful one.

That was my first concert as well, though I was a big fan from his Born to Run days. Interesting that the interview included much discussion of his father. Both his father, mother and little sister were at the July 1978, and a few months later, he came through town again for another couple of shows, and on the second night, we were a few rows behind his parents again! But you know what, when he did the River Tour, it was in a 15,000 seat arena - and I decided, I could never replicate seeing him so close in a relatively small venues, e.g. Berkeley Community Theater and Winterland Ballroom) However, in June 1981, my friend and I took a chance that Bruce might show up for a Gary US Bond’s show in a small club (Old Waldorf) in San Francisco. She and I had the table right up against the stage. As luck would have it, he showed up (with his mother) and played 5 songs, including Quarter to Three, Jole Blon and This Little Girl. We were within six feet of him! That was last time I saw him.

I saw Springsteen on his first tour playing at Red Rocks on a full moon. Then again years later I saw him play Tampa with seats in the pit. God Bless thee E Street Band and Bruce. Phenomenal shows I will never forget them.

Bruce Springsteen is the modern American bard and storyteller. My most favorite Springsteen piece is not even a song, although all of his are spectacular. What resonates most strongly for me is the story he tells in his 1985 live concert album about how he got rejected at the draft board and what is father said when he got home. The way he tells the story is amazing.

As a fan since the Born to Run album (and then I backtracked to listen to his first two albums), I've followed his work pretty closely but missed that one. I saw him in concert on his BTR tour and was blown away just like I was the very first time I played BTR. He's simply an amazing guy and a true artist.

Hey Joe, John Lennon was a nice guy! You mention an incident during one of Lennon's worst periods and say how terrible it is to learn one of your idols turns out to be a jerk. I expected better from you! John Lennon was very open about his life, his early traumas, and what it meant for the Beatles to live in this intense scrutiny of the media. Right-wing churches condemned him to death because he wrote "Imagine." He lived the rest of his life under threat of assassination, and yet he still managed to write some beautiful love songs, anthems (Power to the People), and the soundtrack of our lives before Chapman murdered him. Did you know that in countries all over the world there are "Lennon Walls" where the lyrics of Imagine are written, and even if the walls are painted over, the lyrics appear again almost immediately? Please give Lennon some credit - he gave his life for rock and roll.

Howard talking about his parents just made me wonder how they were doing so I did a quick Google search. I had no idea his father passed away this year. He was 99. And also Howard apparently addressed his moms health as well saying it not good. A lot of physical pain among other things although Howard never got into details.

Howard was as offensive and classless as possible regarding his parents, before his dad's death -- and even after. He disparaged his father for not having enough money and Howard had to pay for expenses/food. He even made fun of his mom's breasts and how they deteriorated. Howard is a sick, sick person. He's worth a billion but complained about paying for his parents' food. His parents' total expense is a decimal point to Howard, but he mocked and disgraced them. Even AFTER his dad died. Howard is 68 years old and he STILL complains how his parents treated him as a child. He's disgusting.

I was lucky enough to see Bruce play in a bar in '94 in Long Branch called Marz American Style with The Iron City Houserockers....3 1/2 hours of pure fun....great night. I knew this Interview with Stern would be great (as long as Robin stayed out of the way)...it was. Fantastic interview with a true Legend

You are right about the Robin thing. I remember a few years ago Robin managed to offend one of the Beatles, Ringo. She said he wasn't a singer. He sang on several of the Beatles albums and also had several solo hit albums. Photograph is still one of my favorite songs ever. Thankfully Robin kept quiet.

Bruce is a Legend- not a doubt about that! I rate any new album by how many times I listen to it in full and how often I go back to it. I’ve played the new covers album twice and that’s it for me. I’m a long time fan of all he’s done but I’m not a fan of covers albums. I probably won’t play it again. Bruce can do whatever he wants and he has nothing to prove. I have no grudges against anyone who loves the new covers album. It’s just not for me. Give me a set of new originals please.🎹🎤🎸😎

Amazing that there were no commercials during what I think was an hour long interview . If I'm wrong correct me but I wonder if that was something they often do on Morning Joe , or just a special thing they did as a one off ?

I was thinking the same thing. It was amazing, I was expecting at most 15 mins. But we were gifted with over an hour, no commercial break. It flowed so well, I wanted them to go to commercial and bring Howard back. I think it’s the first time we have gotten so much Howard on his vacation time. What a thanksgiving gift!

@@hrs2044 do a search on YT for morning joe dated today. The interview was in the last hour of the show. He was comfortable in his own studio but he did turn interviewer once or twice. Seems he loves MJ. It was memorable for its scarcity as much as for its sheer entertainment value. Well worth hunting down.
