I think the movie's biggest failure was in its interpretation of Howard. Comic-Howard was like a crass version of a 1950s movie character. Trying to make him more "family friendly" would never work, but then they compounded the problem by casting a dorky-sounding voice actor. He never delivered the gruff, eternally pissed-off character that was Howard from the comics. And finally, as Cassie pointed out, the Howard costume was just wrong. I remember watching this as a teenager and thinking ,"Jim Henson would have knocked this out of the park". I get why the production may have wanted to just use "a guy in a suit" for the sake of simplicity, but in doing so they gave up on making Howard a more believable character.
@jedijones20 күн бұрын
@@Johnny_Socko Look at Baby Herman in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. He was undoubtedly inspired by the comic book Howard, right down to the cigar-chomping. That movie also had a Howard/Beverly-style romance between Roger and Jessica. And they pulled it off, without it seeming perverted. Roger Rabbit also incorporated the kind of intelligent parody and satire that the comic book did, and that Howard's movie failed to do. Roger Rabbit proves that the same kind of bizarre material in the Howard the Duck comic can work on screen if done right. Making Howard an animated cartoon character in this movie probably isn't what the comic book had in mind, but it might've been an improvement on the suit we got. This movie was expensive enough to make as it was, though.
@Johnny_Socko18 күн бұрын
@@jedijones Wow, that is a great point about how well _Who Framed Roger Rabbit_ threaded the needle of being purposefully crass, yet still funny and poignant. And you're right that there was no satire in _Howard the Duck,_ at least not like in the comics. That would have definitely helped.

Fun fact: In X-Men: The Animated Series (1992-1997), Beast wears a Howard the Duck T-shirt in the episode "Beauty and the Beast," which aired on Jan 15, 1994. This was actually my first introduction to Beast, and because of it, every time I see Howard the Duck, I’m transported back to this deeply emotional episode about Beast finding love, wild contrast to this film and Howard in general as a character. It wasn’t until Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and its end-credits scene that Howard the Duck was reintroduced to mainstream audiences and his first appearance since his 1986 film. Since then, he has mostly appeared in episodes of What If...?, the series that explores alternate MCU timelines, with Howard being a recurring character. He'll appear again in What... If? Season 3 releasing early 2025 and who knows, maybe we'll see him in live action again since the MCU actually does justice to his character.

This gives me hope that one day Cassie will watch Buckaroo Banzai and/or Tank Girl. And, you might be getting Marvin from Marvin the Martian from Looney Tunes.

Lucas produced a bunch of movies in the 80s that he didn't put his name on. However, the studio wouldn't green light this movie unless Lucas did put his name on it. He agreed because his friends wrote the screenplay and he wanted the movie to get made for them.

This is legitimately one of my favorite movies of all time, I think it gets unfairly dragged through the mud. I think it’s funny. I think the adventure is really cool, I dig all the 80s stuff. And I even headcanon this movie into the MCU. Until at least something directly contradicts it.

In about 2002 this was rated 3.8 on IMDB.. now it's up to 4.7!! That means it's gonna takes its rightful place at 10 in 2154

Since the MCU establish the multiverse, it's confirmed by this point that the Howard the Duck film is canon.

I'm pretty sure the guy running the hot tub place is the creator of Howard the Duck, based on fact that he's wearing the glasses and hat Howard had in the comics. It's crazy George Lucas wanted to make this movie, after all the legal problems the comics and Marvel had with Disney, and maybe even Warner Bros.

Just for the record George Lucas had nothing to do with the movie.
@Tr0nzoidАй бұрын
@@chrismalik1579, ha, "for the record." George Lucas produced the movie and hired the writers, who also wrote the screenplay for "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom." He even speaks about it on the DVD feature.
@chrismalik1579Ай бұрын
@Tr0nzoid there's a difference between producer on a movie and a director writer on a movie. There's a huge difference. People keep saying he made the movie. He didn't make the movie. I said he didn't make it. A producer doesn't make a movie. The producer gets people in position. Hires people for positions gets people set up for things. Makes sure that everyone's there for the movie. The writer, the director the editor the photographers, they make the movies. The second unit directors, they make the movie. The producer does not make the movie. Producer has nothing to do with the actual filmmaking of the movie. George Lucas did not write the movie. He didn't have final say so over it. The production company who distributed had the final say so over the final cut.

I think she was looking for it to mention that other superheroes exist. Of course, that didn't happen in any of the pre-MCU Marvel movies. But to casual viewers, Marvel movie now means it connects in continuity to other movies.

Legitimately still the best Marvel movie! This is a 10/10 on IMDB for me. An absolutely hilarious 80's adventure romp, it's incredible! I first saw it for a sleepover at a friend's house.. went watched it 7 times before we had to return the tape the next day This is really Lea Thompson singing too in the Cherry Bomb songs 👩🎤

I first saw this when I was like 12 back in the 80s. I love this movie. It's also one of my daughters favorite movies. I think you went in thinking too seriously about it. It's just supposed to be silly, fun, a little bit scary (Dark Overlord) and not taken too seriously. It's the perfect PG blend. Stuff for kids, be it a little risqué, stuff for adults, be it silly. It's just meant to be fun.
