I've found that CLP or a lubricant will evaporate over time through experience. I have been impregnating white or black graphite (depending on finish of piano and pedal block) in the bushings and it seems to last for many many years without the squeak coming back.

I agree that the effect of Protek CLP wears off over time. Graphite is the more traditional lubricant, it's just hard to apply it without making a mess. Always appreciate feedback!

hi thank you so much Steve. One other problem I have is: two of my upright piano string is in contact with the cast iron frame, and therefore they make a strange sound. what can I do? one thing I can think of is take off some wood from the bridge, but is there better methods?

Lubrication is an immediate fix. Refelting the lyre may be a better long term solution but I would consider this a shop repair and it would be a much larger job.

Just subscribed from Greenland. Great explanation! I have a little squicky key. The piano just arrived, and two days later, the little squicky sound occures when i play the key... do you have any suggestion how to fix it?

The church received as a gift an upright (small) baldwin piano. It is in beautiful shape in that it holds it tune between tunings every 6 months. The issue is that even though we have adjusted the sustaining pedal several times, the sustain just isn't right. I have checked and seen that the pads are away from the strings when the pedal is depressed, but the piano just dosen't have that flow between notes we are looking for. In short, adjusting the bolt/nut at the pedal doesn't completely fix the issue. any suggestions?

My experience with these types is to just pull them off, take them to the shop, complete disassemble, replace all the felt, clean and polish the inner pins, lubricate all moving parts and put it all back together. Good for another 70 years.

My sustain pedal squeaks at the exact same point on my PETROF. Of course I only notice it when I am about to record; go figure. But now I can let my tech know and perhaps he can do something about it!

My pedal is worse squeak lol it’s more high pitch but I’ll get it fixed with the tuner I just got my grand used
