Why do some pianos have a round slug of metal in the keys? I'm assuming it's for the longer/shorter keys

Question please,; When checking/ setting back check will the measurement change according to how hard I strike the key? It seemed like it was but I wasn't sure. I did see I have to watch not to introduce after touch cuz it will move closer if I push it down too hard after the strings are already struck. Thank you.

What would happen if say the back check was set to about 1/2" instead of 5/8"? Conversely what if it was set to say 1" instead of 5/8"

Thank you for sharing this, my piano has the lowest bass Bb string with really soft/ weak sound compared the the other strings, you think doing this would help it? Also, is there a risk of breaking the strings while doing this or causing damage to the pin board when taking out the lowest notes, my piano is very old so it kinda scares me.

It is possible twisting could help, there is always risk of damage if not done properly. Thanks for watching!

You are a genius, didnt think of drill bits. Thank you so much. But you were lit of stock of the 0.185 pins I needed! Found another local piano supply. But thank you! Home depot and Lowes had nothing for me and I was tearing apart every spare hinge I had trying to get lucky 😂

I see copper and brass Jack springs and I guess steel jack springs what is the best material for jack springs?
@howardpianoind
@howardpianoind Ай бұрын
Most jack springs are constructed of thin steel wound into a coil. The material choice is not as significant as properly installing them. I would recommend steel jack springs.

Wonderful what is the link to your store do you also sell the jack springs if I should do decide to replace them. And I would need to purchase some of the lubricant. I am looking to achieve better repetitive action and I understand replacing the Jack springs would give me a better repetitive action. Conversely, would lubing the jack pins have any effect on improving my repetitive action?

I am getting a Baldwin Hamilton studio upright from a church. The piano was manufactured in 1969. I had a technician check it out he said it's in pretty good shape although the bridge has come away from the soundboard partially on the bass end. But he said that wasn't a real big deal and is going to fix it and tune it for me, and lubricate the hammers. (To the best of my recollection I don't want to misquote him but he did say something about lubricating and I thought it was the hammers) Been doing a little reading and to me the action or the return is a little sluggish. He said lubricating the hammers would help the action. (Again to the best of my recollection I don't want to misquote him) Doing some reading I see there is what is called a Jack spring on each mechanism. I have worked as a mechanic most of my life and wondering, is this something I should be able to do myself? I see Jack springs for an upright piano on Amazon. It's about $25 with shipping for a hundred of them. After he is done moving the piano here and tuning it and lubricating the hammers, is replacing the Jack spring something I should consider and do you think that would benefit the action of my piano? I'm looking for quick repetitive action when I ultimately hone my skills in a southern rock honky tonk style. Is there a video where you talk about replacing the Jack springs and the benefits of doing so?

What is the metal (looks like metal) part that goes through the wooden part towards the back of the key? I've searched around but can't seem to find the name. We found an upright piano that was to be thrown away, and after following some of your videos, we found that some of the keys have what looks like calcium on them preventing them from smoothly moving up and down.

On my piano, at least half the strings are inaccessible without taking the whole hammer section off. Is this normal? I can't even use the long handled rubber mutes as they don't reach far enough down. It is tuned a semi tone lower as well.

I noticed that you didn't normally set the tuning lever at a 90° angle (straight up - or as close as possible). Doesn't that bend the tuning pins in the long run? Or do you seat the lever at 90° when you do the final tuning? I was called out on that about 40 years back when I first started to tune pianos. I have noticed pianos where the pins are bent because I had trouble getting them to stay in tune. I do agree with tuning slightly sharp. I will usually tune from C6 upwards a little sharp since those are the notes that have a tendency to go flat the quickest on the OLD uprights that I mostly tune. Guess I'll have to look into an I-pad and Tune Lab. That OLD Conn Strobotuner is a monster to lug around anymore. Good presentation and excellent explanations. Thanks!

You have the best explanation of partials on KZbin. Secondly, I absolutely respect your entire model on this channel. After running into a well established piano technician that is on KZbin and having him effectively tell me that I could never do this properly on my own, I must say, I really appreciate your approach to educating and giving people the chance to try something themselves or at the very least give those of us who thirst for the knowledge somewhere to start. No gatekeeping, just solid information. Howard Piano Industries is truly the kind of business I'll stick with for as long as they are around.
