Religion is an expression of our faith. We read the stories or myths to better understand our place in the world and our connection to each other. To those who practice Wicca, there are rituals and celebrations which are adherent to the faith, however, Witchcraft is a part of that practice and the source of power from a Wiccan's perspective is the Divine, so it IS a religious rite. Now, does that mean that all those who practice Witchcraft feel the same way? No it doesn't. A Witch can be from any culture or background if they follow any Magickal practice then they are a Witch or Witch-like, meaning a Shaman or Medicine man. Their individual "power" may not be influenced by the Divine Sacred and may have no religious undertones at all, but to claim that Witchcraft is not a religion is false because it can be both. For those who think differently, that is fine. However, reevaluate religion for a moment. What is a prayer? A communion with a higher power, right? What is a moment of silence? One might commune with one's self as a means of reflection or meditation. Now, what is a spell? A purpose infused with will and sent out toward its target or to a higher power and may manifest by a strong intent or a granted wish from the Gods? What do all these things have in common? The belief that they will work. Mind over matter. Witches come in all shapes and sizes, there is no right way or wrong way there is only the path you choose to take. WICCA is a path and it is practiced by many people who have fought hard for the recognition to be accepted as a religion within the United States. I am Wiccan and have no quarrel with "traditional Witchcraft", however for any one of us to claim to be an authority over Witchcraft would be an error in judgment because the path of the craft is about knowledge, belief in ourselves (or the Gods), it is a ritual of practice to hone our skills. It’s origins are in the Angra Mainyu of Zoroastrianism, or the destructive spirit opposing the highest diety Ahura Mazda (which became God in Abrahamic Religions) which PRE dates the abrahamic religions. In fact, a big chunk of those religions and their mythology come from Zoroastrianism, including the story of Jesus and Virgin Mary. The idea of Satan was not created in a vacuum amongst Judaism. As is historically documented, Judaism did not even have a concept of the afterlife until after Cyrus freed the Jews and exposed them to the Iranian Zoroastrian tradition. I wish there was a little more research into that aspect. Otherwise fascinating series which I am thoroughly enjoying!
