They're right that Diesel is less dangerous than gasoline because of the lack of vapor. That doesn't make putting it through a shop vac safe.

I don’t recommend using a shopvac for any flammable liquids, but you should definitely never use one for vacuuming gasoline. It will EXPLODE! Diesel isn’t as volatile as gasoline, as the vapors of gasoline are much more explosive but I still do not recommend using a shopvac for such a purpose.

Yep quite true... electric motor brushes would ignite gasoline VERY easily... What I've done before is run a hose to the bottom of the tank, then stick a blow-gun nozzle in beside the hose, and pack a grease rag in REAL tight into the fuel tank opening... then hit it with some compressed air... DON'T overpressurize the tank or you could rupture it, just keep hitting it with shots of compressed air to keep the tank pressurized enough to blow the fuel up the hose and out of the tank into your storage tank (usually a clean old 55 gallon drum, or 5 gallon pails) Works great and no risk of explosion... Later! OL J R :)

Another thing you need to add to your tank is something that takes water out of the diesel. We use FPPF fuel power in every transport load we get. Water is what causes the algae and the occurs naturally in tanks. So keep the water in check and you won't have algae problems.

Ryan next time you need to get fuel out of a tank. Take a length of 1" hose that goes to the bottom of the fuel tank and in to you bucket. Next take an air blower and rags to cover the opening in the tank. hold the rags down on fuel tank and pressure up the fuel tank. It will push the fuel out the hose and into you bucket. I never like using a vacuum on any type fuel. Also Sea Foam is a good additive to run in your fuel tank. It keep the moisture out of the fuel.

Check you fuel lines for deterioration. From what I understand we call it algae but, algae needs some sunlight. It’s bacteria sludge that develops between the water and fuel in the tank. You can flush the tank with a hand pressurized tank with spray nozzle ( longray sp8a, or similar) some bio kill and kerosene , drain it out the bottom plug into a bucket. Also check your fuel tank vents, make sure they are working correctly. The fuel you pumped out didn’t look to bad so it doesn’t look like you have any injector issues, putting oil back in your fuel. I drive a 1998 Classic with just about the same setup . I got rid of that style fuel filter though. Cartridge style lets you see your filter, fuel, and it’s easy to tell when you need to change it out.

Another thing you can do is an old trick I used when I was pumping gas into the combine-- every morning 50 gallons of gasoline. When I was a kid that was my job running one of those old back-n-forth hand pumps til my arms were ready to fall off pumping all that gas in there. When we got back into grain farming I was determined to figure out a better way. The boss wasn't gonna buy one of them fancy electric pumps for the fuel barrel in the back of the pickup and so I did the next best thing... I got a regular aftermarket electric fuel pump like you'd mount on the frame rail of an older vehicle to replace the mechanical fuel pump those engines used to have, and a good size roll of hose. I clamped one hose long enough to go to the bottom of the fuel barrel to the pump inlet and another hose long enough to go up to the combine tank and then made me a jumper wire set to power it out of an old extension cord, with a couple battery clamps on one end to hook to the battery of the truck and the other end I wired the plug to the power wires of the pump. Slide the hoses into the fuel barrel and combine and then plug in the pump to the extension cord and let her rip... I could grease the combine and do all the other "start of the day" maintenance in the time it took to fill the tank, which was about 30 minutes or so, and it worked great. Only cost me about $20 bucks for the pump and maybe $10 for a roll of hose, and the old extension cord and battery clamps I had laying around... Do the same thing to pump the fuel out of your semi into a barrel, just run the suction hose to the bottom of the semi's tanks and the output hose into the fuel barrel... Later! OL J R :)

Excuse my ignorance but how do you get algae in diesel fuel tanks? Does algae grow in petroleum distillate or diesel fuel? Is it residual water in there that causes it? Just curious.
@lukestrawwalker5 жыл бұрын
Algae doesn't grow in the diesel itself but in the water that contaminates the fuel... it can happen to farm tractors and equipment too, and even in diesel storage tanks. As the truck or machine burns fuel it draws in air from outside to replace it in the tank, so eventually the tank is mostly full of air when it's nearly empty of fuel. If it's been warm, moist, and humid and the tank is full of warm, moist, humid air that then cools down quite a bit overnight, moisture can condense out of the air in the tank and run down the walls of the tank and pool at the bottom. Algae can grow in that water using the fuel as a food source. That's why it's best to keep the tank full and refill it at the end of the day when the machine is still warm so the tank is full of fuel to minimize condensation, but there's only SO MUCH you can do with say a semi that is refuelled fairly infrequently in farm use... Later! OL J R :)

@lukestrawwalker5 жыл бұрын
Red fuel is "farm only" diesel NO ROAD TAX so it's cheaper to buy from the fuel delivery company... BUT you can ONLY LEGALLY use it in farm equipment and stuff NOT highway vehicles, including farm trucks. You ca drive a tractor from one location to another on the highway and that's fine, but NOT trucks. (Technically speaking, if you had a truck that you NEVER drove on the highway ONLY on the farm you COULD burn it in there but if they catch you on the road with it you'd be in big trouble). GREEN fuel is regular HIGHWAY DIESEL that has been charged the roughly 46 cents a gallon (depending on state/location) ROAD TAX for use in on-highway vehicles like diesel cars and trucks. There's really NO DIFFERENCE in the fuel EXCEPT the farm diesel is DYED RED to differentiate it from green highway TAXED fuel. Either one will burn just as well in either engine. If I run low on farm diesel and need more before the delivery truck can get here I have sometimes bought a couple five gallon cans of fuel to keep going for the day and dumped it in the tractor-- it works fine. IT's just you pay an extra 46-ish cents a gallon for it in road tax. OTOH, pumping the RED fuel into your pickup, semi, or diesel car it'll run just fine BUT if the DOT or a state trooper (really ANY law officer can dip a tank if they wanted to basically) and they catch you with red fuel in there on a highway vehicle you'll be charged with TAX EVASION and get a HUGE fine... The dye in red diesel will stick around in the tank for a LONG time because of the residual fuel in the tank and system and mix with fresh green fuel from the highway diesel pumps so your fuel will STILL be "pink" for a long time (several tank fulls) after you quit burning the farm diesel in your truck or semi or car or whatever... If they stick the tanks and it comes up PINK you'll STILL get the ticket and big fine so it's not worth it... Red diesel=farm equipment, green diesel=highway trucks/vehicles... Later! OL J R :)
