Thoroughly enjoyed this livestream and looking forward to more of the travelers guide of Westeros! I hope that we get to see Howland Reed in Season 8. He can explain so much and back up every thing that Bran and Sam find out from how to kill the Night King and when Jon finds out about his heritage. He was a close friend of Eddard Stark and very respected.

Robert mon cher, I had to think awhile after watching this (which is good). One question keeps popping up. Why would Howland Reed be with Ned at all? His being at Harrenhal makes some sense because it is in the Cranogmens backyard. But Howland never joined Ned's army, he's not a sword wielding Knight and Ned was at King's Landing before going to the ToJ. So why would Howland travel weeks through war torn territory to go with Ned into Dorne? Did Ned ask him to come? Did Reed just appear and say, "Here I am Sir and I can lead you to Lyanna?" Is this just a big GRRM brain fart or a clue to the biggest lie in seven kingdoms?
@pyramidion59117 ай бұрын
Exactly! What on earth is HR doing there!? Did he feel guilty for introducing Lyanna and Rhaegar, or... is Howland in cahoots with the Daynes and/or being manipulated by them!? P.s. How sure are we that the she-wolf was not Ashara? The wolves could be the members of the wolves' den, not necessarily just the starks. Lots of scheming seems to have gone on that day at summerhall, and we are privy to none of it!

Arya can be Azor Ahai or even the Lightbringer of Azor Ahai..Syrio told to her ''that you boy are a sword''..Also Arya is a metaphorical sword in my opinion ..She like a sword was shuttered by all those problems that she get faced throughout the seasons ..Also remember in S6 when she jumped on the canal [water] wounded by Waif in Bravos ...She was broken and she faced nearly death .She in S8 might try to kill Cercei [the lion]and get wounded again and she might to kill Mellisandra [as nissa nissa]with her Catspaw ..I think she also was reborn on that little room where she fight the Waif ..admist the smoke of the candle[smoke] she shut and salt the [salty humidity of Bravos ... Bravos is an island into the sea and the sea has salt ]..So this can make her Azor Ahai or Lightbringer also or both.

There is one huge question: Why the heck was Howland Reed at the Tower of Joy? GRRM went to great lengths to expose his background as a non warrior, isolationist, small being who would not be by Ned's side during battle. So where did he meet up with Ned and the posse and travel all the way to Dorne at the ToJ? For what purpose? Something is strange with the whole scenerio.
@Ouisija5 жыл бұрын
In another video, Robert speculates that Howland was brought b/c he knew Lyanna was there (mentioned in this video also) and because Ned wanted a small and discreet group. He trusted that any secrets would be safe with Howland.

I think that's a brilliant idea, to polish up and present the Weary Traveller as an E-Book. Or even as a 'right proper'' book with illustrations by sanrixian? A kickstarter or something of the sort? Hi Robert! Thanks so much for covering Howland Reed! Sorry I couldn't be there live. About that - is it possible to change the time to 10pm UK time instead of 11pm? And also, I hope you see this as it's so long after you aired it, but how do you feel about the theory that Meeran Reed is in fact, John's twin and Howland took her to keep her safe. She looks nothing like Jojen in the books or the show and is appx. the same age as well. It could explain why Bran turned so cold to her, not that he no longer had use for her, but that he needed her to get back to the Neck where she would be safe in case something happens to John. Perhaps John has to blow the horn?

Another question as I watch::: All the info leaning to the Laugh Tree Knight being Lyanna is good, but not proven. OTHER than her, who else could it actually be? I did not read books but was Howland visible at the Tourney or presumed to be on the Isle still? So, could the Knight actually be Howland, after being suited (haphazardly) and glorified by the Ch. of the Forest ? Could the short Knight be a Ch, of Forest working with magic to defeat in name of Howland? Further, after Tower of Joy, Ned went to Starfall/Ashara Dayne, but Howland ran the other way and did not join him there?? Kinda squashes the Howland/Ashara in the tent theory.

I still find the timing of the tower of joy so strange. George said Jon was born during or right after the fall of Kings landing. Between Ned meeting Jamie on the thrown, lifting a seige and journeying into a desert while possibly riding a couple thousand miles it seems like either George had his facts on a major event wrong, or Jon was born at least a couple months after the fall of Kings landing, or Jon isn't the tower of joy baby.
@christophermitchell70016 жыл бұрын
This is part of the reason why many people, despite the shows instance, believe that book Jon will not be the product of R+L=J. There are many strange things about this situation. Including, Why does everyone just except that Rhaegar was down there with kidnapped Lyanna without question?(He only arrives "from the south" just before he leaves for the Trident to fight the last battle of the rebellion) Does that mean then this situation was an open secret?....so wouldnt that mean that a good number of people are aware of Lyanna's pregnancy....How did Ned kill the greatest swordsman of his era?,....The show tells us that Holland stabbed him in the back but shouldnt that be obvious to anyone. No one ever talks about how awesome of a swordsman Ned is, but everyone seems to except without question that he killed Arthor Dayne. Why didnt Ned bring any of his dead friends back with him? He brought Dawn back to the Daynes, while Lady Dustin 16 years later is still angry that her husband was buried in Dorne and not in Barrowtown? Why does a house Dayne love Ned so much. The head of the house is named after him and thought he was some kind of a hero? Why does Ned never think about Rhaegar and when he does it is never is a bad light? Even though he is supposedly raising Rhaegar's son who was born from disgrace(possibly rape) and was the cause of a war and Ned's personal dishonor? To say nothing of the death of Ned's Father Brother and Sister. If anything the timing of the children's birth is the most explained/elaborated on mystery here.
@lanestapp26 жыл бұрын
Why would the dornish be cool with rhaegar bringing his mistriss there? Doran definitely wouldn't let that slide. Why does ned remember the faces of the kings guard, but not his friends? Why would the kings guard want to harm their new princes only remaining family? Why does the heir of starfall claim to be milk brothers with jon? How and why did ned know about the tower of joy to begin with? There is an incredible amount of information we don't know about this crucial event, and its even riddled with conflicting stories. It's quite clear that we are not supposed to know what happened there, wherever it truly occurred, and I think they oddness of the scene in the show is proof of that.
@christophermitchell70016 жыл бұрын
Agreed Basically It is why I am sure there will not be a pov chapter for several characters unless they are a prologue or epilogue. ( Howland, Little Finger, The Kindly Man, Marwyn, Who ever the Faceless man in the Citadel is, Euron, etc...)There are characters who have story breaking info and we just cant know their minds without blowing open huge holes in the mystery of the narrative. Case in point, we know that Mel is mostly a fraud from her chapter; therefore we can pretty much take everything she has said with a ironic grain of salt or, at the very least, chalk much of it up to misguided fanaticism. Unlike and as in comparison to, Moqorro, who is additionally unlikely to have a pov for this very reason.

The comment that Ned let everyone believe that he killed Arthur Dane (when in fact Howland Reed stabbed him) doesn't make a lot of sense to me. More likely Howland told people that Ned killed Dane (perhaps the first people they came upon after leaving the tower) for a number of reasons:1. Crannogmen are reclusive and Howland certainly didn't want the notoriety of being the one that killed the greatest swordsman that ever lived. 2. He owed the Starks for rescuing him from the bullies at the Tourney of Harrenhall so he gave Ned the credit.3. Killing Dane by stabbing him in the back was necessary but didn't meet the code of chivalry so Ned and Howland didn't really want to get a bad rep like Jamie did.4. It's GRRM drawing a connection between killing the Mad King and Dane. But showing that Jamie didn't care if people know and Ned does. (The only person that seems to die by chivalry is Prince Raegar. And Stannis in the show.)
@christophermitchell70016 жыл бұрын
Julie the problem is that the entire story surrounding the Tower of Joy is unbelievable.To address your point, though there are a host of other problems with these events as they are told to us in both book and show, is that no one talks about Ned being a great swordsman but he and his pals of lesser note(I imagine most people cant even name the other four), one of which is legendarily diminutive, take on and kill three of the greatest warriors in Westeros( one of whom is known to be only rivaled by Baristan Selmy in single combat skills). If we are to except these events as being true then they are clearly an open secret that people ignore because the propaganda of the Baratheon Throne is more appealing than the reality. I mean Robert was not the best King but he was a loved King, that is shown in book and in show. The people, Lords and commons alike, must just be letting details slide for the common good. More over It can also be another example of the many Dawkins Drift moments that GRRM spreads throughout these books, where what is believed or even said to be known about people/history/places/things are simply incorrect. The characters are swayed by this false info, even the readers are purposefully misled, and perpetuate false facts ignorantly adding layers of mystery to the narrative. However, and I believe likely to be the case here, (and I know people like to point to show events and say; "that is the story, deal with it") but D&D are horrible story tellers and have created massive discontinuity from incredibly well written/ error free source material. The inconsistencies here, because we in fact havent been given the actual story by GRRM via the books, are most likely show translation errors to speed the story along and are not representative of the actual story events. In book narrative, It is highly unbelievable that Ned would be welcomed by the Daynes. Then honored and venerated by them if he had been complicit in, what amounts to these individuals, as murder and not honorable combat.(Like I said above if these events play out this way, Everyone should obviously know Ned and Howland are lying about something) No; I dont know how the story will play out but the fact is that Arthor Dayne was not killed by Howland Reed or Ned Stark. Just like the Scooby Starks are not going to be responsible for killing Petyr Baelish and Jon's name is not Aegon. These things just dont make any sense and are clearly not a story that GRRM would write.

Another screenshot that may be important… drive.google.com/open?id=1affhXuq1rkku4fft2fkIgoV0XFaq0QsM. Who is the noblewoman holding a baby at the Tower of Joy? Could it be Ashara Dayne? Ned heard someone call his name from the window above (books only?). Lyanna was too weak to do so-Ashara knew his name.

Lyannabanna - Yes, I think it's quite likely that Ashara Dayne was there. I'll be doing a whole series on what I think really happened at the ToJ / Robert's Rebellion later in the summer.

Please take a look at this screenshot- I think it’s important!: drive.google.com/open?id=1UzPjWpc041K33qSdHAcC2XPvQh1tDBai It was isolated from a split-second glimpse in one of Bran’s visions-a raven’s-eye view of The Isle of Faces. The contrast has been enhanced to improve visibility of the seven spiral elements, which match overhead views of the CotF’s cave hideout and the NKs’ “messages.” I cannot take credit for this brilliant observation-it was mentioned in a video about something else. I failed to save the link so I found another source for this purpose.

Lyannabanna - Yes, that spiral is definitely an important link; it shows that the WW know their heritage and want the cotf/humans to understand that.

Please remember that this (contrast-enhanced) screenshot is isolated from one of Bran's visions. It is NOT an overhead view of the COTF's cave hideout. Rather, it documents a seven-legged spiral pattern surrounding The Isle of Faces. If this clue was not important, HBO show-runners D&D would have omitted it.

Do you think Howland knew he was sending his son to die with Bran & knew it had to be done? Do you think he knew his daughter must be the one to save Bran? I think he knew from the time he left the Isle of Faces his children would be important for the future.

Wouldn't surprise me if he could have gone himself. Howland is a big shithouse with no honour.

Suggestion for A Well Told Tale:This is, obviously, a very ambitious undertaking, and a full reading (esp. in 45 minute increments which is a good time length) may take weeks, if not more.I suggest you intermix some shorter readings and discussion. The best ones I can think of are some of the appendices of the Ring Trilogy. Take a couple of moments to put them into their historical context (not our history, theirs, and then read the excerpts);Tolkien was a philologist. He created the history and the language, themselves, as a prelude to the novels. History and language are the basis for the world he created. That sounds boring. It certainly is not. Ex.: there is specific reference and explanation of Arwen's tragedy after Aragorn died. The description is poignant, painful, and makes sense. There are many others, including the dwarves, fairies , and fleeting, magical characters.Did you know that Tolkien was a code breaker during WWII? What a world he lived and thought in?

Hey In Deep, you made a couple of errors in your reading of the history. Reed did not go back to the Isle, he went to the shore and stared out at the isle and prayed. Also, the the squires did not fight with the Mystery Knight, she challenged the squires' Kights and after winning did not take their armor, but told them to teach their squired some manners, which they said they would.

jabojr - Apologies if I mis-spoke. It's easy to do in a livestream. You're right on both counts. :)

I don't think he stabbed Arthur Dane. If for no other reason than I don't think Ned would have considered him a good man or friend if he stabbed another man in the back. Even if it was to save his life. I could be wrong, but it just seems too...cheap.
