Just what I needed to know to get my printer working with all of my computers on my home network. Swapping cables all the time is a pain, I can't find my wireless print server dongle, and just happen to have a nice Linksys wireless router I'm not using just now. I have two questions: 1) I intent to turn off DHCP, assign an IP address to the E1550, plug in the Ethernet cable to a port OTHER THAN WAN/LAN port to use it as a wired/wireless extender and a wireless print server. QUESTION - will Tomato Router firmware allow to turn off DHCP and assign an IP address to E1550? 2) Assuming the answer to the first question is yes - If I connect a USB HUB to the E1550 - can I connect two (more than one) USB printers to the USB HUB? Hi There, This seemed to be the solution I wanted for a long time. I'm using a Linksys E2500v3 and the firmware change to Tomato work quite easily and it does show the printer connected (Canon MP550). However when I add the printer it won't print a test page or any page whatsowever. Any ideas?

Can you turn a wireless router into a wireless print server? Like have your main router running and use a spare router to just act as a printer server and nothing else. I have an old wireless N router that has tomato on it already, and it has a usb port. Could I switch it from a router to a wireless access point like we used to do as a wireless bridge and share it as a network printer?

Very good video thanks...After 2 days wrestling with my DIR 860L firmware (not available in Tomato but available in DD WRT) I finally have the router running, set it up in Windows 10 but printer print test fails all the time 😡 (Epson Artisan 1400) i will keep experimenting and see if there is a solution to the problem.

Unfortunately this method only shares the printer, not the scanner. I think sharing the scanner requires to install Optware sane-backend. It's something I haven't tried though, so I can't confirm. Sorry!

Great video editing. Didn't waste time with unnecessary talk. My Netgear R7000 is a wonderful piece of equipment. Since I think October the firmware from Netgear has been very unstable. Still bad. They forced me to Tomato firmware. Printer works great for windows but still can't get it to work with Linux. HELP.

The router should be enough! The modem is only for the Internet and the wireless router is responsible for the wireless and wired local network as well as connecting your local devices to each other (in this case sharing the printer). Thanks!

No one ever covers the parts about 1)If you don't have a usb port on your modem and 2) your modem is perched in a location inconveniently distant from your printer, you need to add a router to your already existing wifi system. Nice small travel routers are good if you need to buy a new one with usb port that will handle a printer.

How would you access the printer with a phone over WiFi?

The best way to print from you phone would be to have a Google Cloud ready printer ( for android phones) or Apple AirPrint ready (for IPhones), unfortunately this printer is neither of those. The workaround would be to connect the printer via a USB cable to a computer and then install either Google cloud print or Apple AirPrint (through some third party apps) on that computer, then you should be able to print from your phone. You can use printhand app on android phone. Choose nearby wireless and you should choose manual setup. Printer you should plug-in to usb port on router (you must turn on usb print server on router)

Any router as long as you can install tomato and has a USB port should be ok. The router would be connected to the modem for internet access, if you do not need internet access then you don't have to connect it to the modem

As long as the router you're using has a USB port and can run tomato then all you should need is a long USB printer cable. or if you can put the router close to your printer you could probably use your regular printer cable.
