This was always a big one for me with the way newspapers are laid out. I found so many times growing up I would start reading an article on the front page, and when it says "Continued on page B8" or whatever, there was about a 90% chance I wouldn't be able to overcome the motivation hurdle to follow the article to the other location to read its conclusion.

I asked about this in the preorder book forum, and there’s a lesson to be learned about how we present ourselves so that we are better heard and understood by everyone. You can do it without masking, yet still organize your thoughts in a way that’s accessible. And I think Jessica’s efforts towards accessibility in the channel and the book are integral to her success.

That is one of my strategies too! I leave it out where I can see it. I specifically end up reading this book around other tasks I am doing that have periods of wait time. The last time I read this book I was making dinner. I had to wait 10 minutes for the water to boil, read the book. Then I put the pasta on, and read the book for another 12 minutes while the pasta cooked, etc. I find this book is very easy to read in sections and pick up right from where I left off.

I haven't watched the video yet but you did a great job! I got it on audible. You read at a great pace. Most readers are a bit too slow for me to keep focused, I always have to put the speed at like x1.3. I learned a ton of helpful and actually very useful advice, especially in the friends section. Did the whole 9 hrs while cleaning my house. The hyperfocus was really with me that day haha I finally learned the purpose of small talk at 31! Mostly I learned that I don't have to constantly hate and blame myself for all the forgetfulness, tiny mistakes, lost things, late fees, over ambition, time issues, etc. but to expect and plan for those things to be there too. I am learning to compensate in healthier ways; not think of my diagnosis as an excuse to stay the same, but a reason to approach myself differently, knowing more of the variables. Edit: Finished the video. The conversational way you wrote it was very important to how engaging and helpful this book was. Sometimes, ADHD and other mental health books (especially those about trauma) really make me feel like a tiny person on a glass slide being examined under a microscope. Books like that take me forever to read and I rarely finish them. They make me feel emotionally overwhelmed and like someone is presenting me with a shiny platter of my problems and faults and then dark statistics for why I'll never be different and probably die early. Your book felt like a wise friend with similar struggles giving me real, life-earned advice from the heart. Thank you for all the hard work to make it a good and helpful experience. TDLR: Great book. The audible version is good. It made my life different. Buy and read the book.

I’ve followed your channel for a while now, so I’ve learned about a lot of the topics included in your book already. Sometimes if I already “know” what to expect when reading it can make me lose attention, but when I noticed (especially after you explicitly mentioned it, hence the title of this video) that the book was written to be ADHD friendly, I was already 60 pages in all of a sudden. You’re a phenomenal author and it goes without saying that you’ve touched so many people. You really deserve the recognition-this book is fantastic!

Hey Jessica, just to let you know, my therapist, a wonderful human, borrowed my copy and got her own to share insights about ADHD with her patients (and her grown daughters, as well as herself!). We really appreciate how accesibly it is written, how the writing resonates with people from all walks of life, and how helpful all the supplementary input/anecdotes from others with ADHD (as well as yourself!) are. Thank you for a book that's full of life, joy, and infuses we readers with what my therapist calls, "galvanizing potential energy" :) In short, I feel more motivated to handle my ADHD symptoms now more than ever, and do better with my life. I can only hope your other readers feel the same! Keep going! You rock! And congrats on being a Mama!!!!!

I totally agree. I am an author with 10 million books in print and I have ADHD. I have come to see ADHD and to use it as an advantage in my writing. I write biographies for middle schoolers through to adults . I find I know when to stop writing about something and move on. My co writer (also my husband) would often like to keep going on a particular point, but I say "no, this is enough. It's going to get boring if we write any more", so we move on. The older I get the more I see this as a super power. I will order your book today. It looks fabulous!

Also this: it really bothers me how badly recipes can be written sometimes. First of all, I haaaate reading recipes off my phone or tablet (scrolling back and forth between ingredients and steps? absolutely not!) so if I find a recipe I think I'll make more than once I print it and put it in my recipes binder. Lately I've begun to ADHD-ize my recipes by writing out the highlights of each step or the order I need to do things, like this: 1. Potatoes 2. Make sauce 3. Onions 4. Garlic. I have to think about these kinds of things every time I follow a recipe, so why not just write it down to save Future Me all that extra effort? I also sometimes have to write step-by-step instructions for work procedures and I try my very hardest to make them as straightforward (read: ADHD friendly) as possible. And you better *believe* that if someone else has written them and they're not ADHD friendly I *absolutely* will unapologetically rewrite them.

Also also: is this why the idea of reading on a Kindle sounds horrendous to me? Because it's all just giant blocks of text? Aside from the fact that it'd be too easy for me to keep switching between books and never get any one book finished.... When I read stuff online that requires concentration I have to highlight a sentence or two at a time while I read it so that my eyes don't wander all over the page and not focus on anything. That's a hack I've figured out recently and what a difference it's made!

I have found that some of the simplest changes can also help the most. White space and good layout can help those of us who have difficulty reading. I like to use white space to take notes or a well placed arrow to your words that I relate to. In a future addition you may want to leave space for a reader’s reflection. Working with new concepts helps with retaining them. Great to hear that your book is doing so well. I taught students with special needs for 30 years because I grew up like them.

THIS! ^ Petition for you to write school textbooks, or at least urgently pass this vital yet overlooked piece of wisdom on to your publishers so they can tell any and all textbook writers they have or know. . I just want you to know I started crying when in the book, you described the process of planning your first wedding. My experience was eerily similar, even down to the ball gown dress and learning to waltz, and the marriage being short. My first marriage was the same. While the reason we divorced was not my ADHD, it was definitely a contentious point. Divorce sucks, but I'm glad there are others who can commiserate with how ADHD has affected our relationships.

I love the formatting of the physical book and am so glad to have it to use as a resource. That said, I actually “read” it cover to cover on audible because that's the easiest way for me to find (make) time to read. Having both the physical text and an audio version (sometimes “read” at the same time) has been a go-to strategy for me academically. I need the info “twice over” as it were! I also love that YOU read the audiobook because the emotions and even fun moments come through so well. Thank you!!!

I wrote a book (not about ADHD) that is specifically designed and marketed as ADHD friendly. I hadn't discovered your channel yet but I'm happy to see that this is a thing that exists elsewhere! Some things I did: - Having confusing chapter titles so you want to read the next one - Really short chapters (1-2 pages) - Simple, emotional and personal language - Beautiful illustrations that tell the story - Breaking the fourth wall sometimes - Foreshadowing

Currently reading your book, congrats on making the bestseller list. The one thing I more or less immediately realized after starting to read is that I would actually like to have a chapter on "How to work with this (or better any) book when you have ADHD", because I feel like I'm usually forgetting about what I read the instant when I put the book away. Never really realized it before, but here I bought it hoping to learn something from it myself, and then realized how much of a difficulty I usually have learning something from a book (I usually have to read passages over and over again until something actually sticks for good).

Congratulations, Jessica! I really appreciate all the effort you and your publishers and the community have put into this book, and your determination to distill everything you have learned into one book. I have been following along with the channel for along time and thought I knew a lot, but revisiting the material in the way you have laid it out made it more effective for me as a resource for whatever I am struggling with. one of the things that attracted me to your channel was your openness and vulnerability in talking about ADHD and its impact on you. We present an edited version of ourself to others, and so it is really easy to feel like my struggles are unique to me. The anecdotes really made it easy for me to relate my struggles to the topic of the chapter, and so I could then identify why I was struggling and how the tools would help me. It made it less an abstract topic and more something that directly relates to me.

I never realized I had this issue with reading until very recently, because I never had an issue reading pages of text in fiction/genre books. I preferred short chapters, but never had an issue getting into it. And then as I've gotten into nonfiction in the last couple of years, there is a HUGE gap between what I like (page variety) and what killed my motivation (endless blocks of text). It definitely made me look back at my years in school and how much textbooks and reading material affected my learning because I never wanted to pick up "boring" books about topics I was otherwise interested in, but I could zip through others.

I actually pre-ordered mine online through Blackwell's (part of Waterstones) and they delivered it to me on the 30th of December (Not the UK edition though obviously, I wonder what the difference is? Aha, apparently just a different cover). Embarrassingly I've not got around to reading any of it yet though because I've been super-obsessed with learning piano on the keyboard I got for Christmas. 😊 Still, I had to grab a copy to support Jessica and this amazing channel, and I'm sure it'll be great when I do finally get started on it.

I work as a book designer (and have and struggle with ADHD) and hearing you describe the process of making this book was interesting. I appreciate your research, organization, and consistency in the structure of the chapters. It makes designing books like these easier. When there are call outs, illustrations, boxes, etc styling these books can be verrrryyyyy time consuming and can be challenging. I really hope this designer had enough time and wasn’t overloaded with other titles (although I suspect they were 😢) when they designed the layout. That said the design looks great! And very digestible! The white is always nice (when you can afford the higher page count). I need to get a copy to make my brain happy :)

Despite having ADHD, reading isn’t typically a huge struggle for me. I love words and will devour multiple books in an afternoon or read 8 different papers related to something I’m trying to design at work. However, I heard, I think it was Brendan Mahon maybe(?), say that one of the things he loved about the book was how fast he felt he could get through it because of the spacing and amount of text per page and the engaging nature of the writing, like three minutes could pass and you can feel like you’ve made a ton of progress because you’re five pages in already and that really clicked for me as one of my biggest needs in making writing ADHD accessible. I need to feel like I’m making progress and “accomplishing something” while reading. I mostly read YA and fantasy-romance novels …. Because both genres tend to be written in a way where you can fly through pages. I need to feel that dopamine hit of having made progress every time I turn the page and I need it to come often or else I get bored and stop reading. If it can’t be accomplished by the words themselves, then formatting can totally enable this. In my job, a lot of papers I read have charts and graphs and circuit diagrams that take up a lot of space, so therefore I make progress quickly still. Papers without or where they’re all at the end for whatever reason they came up with to make you flip back and forth are hard because I loose focus and reread paragraphs over and over and can’t find my spot on the page. I didn’t jive with any of what I had heard about why the book is ADHD friendly until i took into account that the aspects that make it ADHD friendly for other brains make it easier and more likely that my beed to fly through pages mote likely to be met.

I live in Sweden and have managed to order and get a book already through a locally based online book store. I’m pretty sure that should work in the uk as well. … I just, googled uk based online book store. First hit, “Blackwells” (not sponsored or anything, check out other options if you like) have a search bar. Searching for “How to ADHD” there I get a hit. So if you want it, you don’t have to wait.

So. UK is a little bit interesting. I don't know how easy (or not) and expensive (or not) it is to get the US version in the UK. But if you WANT the UK version you have to wait until March. US version is hardcover. UK version is softcover. And the cover designs are different. But the content is the same :) (That said I dunno where you can go to get the US version in the UK??? I imagine you can order from other places outside the UK and get it shipped but idk if that'd be expensive-- hi logistics and international shipping is super complicated😅)

@@HowtoADHD Thankyou for your reply, honestly im very honoured you took the time to. But i can assure you i know it's not out in England Until March 7th, and im really not bothered about the cover type really. I do like that it makes it lighter for my weak hands though. I would say it's probably done that way because its actually cheaper to ship lighter objects anyway. And i will happily wait rather than pay extremely expensive international shipping fees, since im not that rich lol :3

Hi! Just wanted to say that I bought your book. I saw it at the book store and was like "ohhh!! I wanted it so much!!" So I took it. I started to read it and... WOW ! I feel like I hear your voice in my head while reading it! Love that! Also: I needed that so much right now. I struggle so much and reading your book feels so good. I'm not far yet, but I wanted to let you know. I was reading a part this morning and I reconised myself so much that I had tears in my eyes... and some sentences later, you write in the book that when you started to research about adhd you sometimes were crying while reading about it because finaly you understood things, because you realised you were not crazy and the struggle was real. So... thank you for your book. I was already a fan of your channel, but with that book: wow! thank you so much. (sorry for my writing, english is not my first language).

Granted, I struggle with the stories, but that is probably part of my autism coming out. I must say, though, I'm really glad to see this book done and love listening to it so far. I find your strategy and approach to the book very similar to my approach to my current book on AI. It's more about a reference for me than any one thing or target audience. It's not like anyone makes lots of money with books generally, but in this case, this is a really great book for me, done more or less how I would want the info organized in one spot. Great job. Thank you.

From the pages you showed in the video, it looks like the strategies you used to break up the text/add visual “extras” still allow for clear reading of the entire page. Sometimes, when a page has lots of extra text boxes, pull quotes, etc., I feel like I’m kind of jumping around on the page, and there can be stress about not “missing” something. But it looks like yours is laid out so your eyes can still easily follow everything from the top of the page to the bottom! Looks great!
