I feel like I have the exact opposite problem. I always think things are going to take way longer than they actually do take so I get really overwhelmed and then procrastinate. And then when I actually do them FINALLY I'm like 'and that took this amount of time? WOW! :D

Ahh I have the same thing! I repeatedly schedule too much time for the sake of being anxious about getting off schedule but then my breaks take up that extra time instead of using it.

Should I account for my procrastination time?
@pbbandit4324
@pbbandit4324 7 жыл бұрын
Probably, but that might be counter-productive. Also, I dunno if it might help you, but it helps me to make my own deadline for things in advance of the actual one. Then I still procrastinate, but just to my date, and usually all the stuff gets done. Only problem is it's very hard to start in the middle of everything being due and if I do get behind... well.

What currently helps me to organize my schedule is the app "Reclaim" - you list your tasks and to-dos including estimated time and due date, and the app schedules them automatically into your google calendar. If you take longer or shorter, it automatically recalculates. If a task is getting urgent, it changes it's color so you know that you really have to do it now because your schedule doesn't allow more time to work on it until the due date considering the other ongoing tasks. --- I usually don't have trouble to estimate the time for ONE task, but I always underestimate HOW MANY tasks are going on (and need to be finished) at the same time. This app/add-on helped me realize "Oh, I still have two weeks to work on this little task, BUT I need to get started on it NOW because there's more things to do in these two weeks which I didn't consider" - helped me deal with procrastination, too ....

For me, what I have found helps the most in school: WRITE IT DOWN. Get an agenda. As soon as you get homework, take note of it. At the end of the day, go through your agenda in front of your locker to make sure you're taking everything you need home with you. Get home and do your homework as soon as you get there. "A small break" turns into procrastination. Also, find out if it works best for you to do boring homework first and then the assignments you think you'll enjoy more. Also, be patient with yourself: if you forget to write an assignment down, move on. Keep on writing stuff down. Eventually, it will become a habit.

Sebasaurus I agree! at my school, we are allowed to have our cell phones. I tried several planner apps, and Myhomework was by far the best for me. it's free (while it does have a pay version, free has all the features I need), and you can access it on any phone, tablet, or computer (so you can't lose it or forget to bring it). some of my favorite features include: two views, a calendar view and a planner view (which can be organized by priority, class, type, or all); it will send notifications; it will show all of your homework, no matter how much time there's until it's due; and it has widgets, I put the homework widget on the first page, so it's the first thing I see when I open my phone.

Thank you. Some things that I have discovered about my ADD Brain is 1, an analog time peace is better because it represents a quantity that I can visualize. A digital time peace is just numbers to me and they are just different every time I look at them. 2, I am motivated and energized by using the creative pert of my brain in conjunction with my hands. To help me start a task I will sort things into piles. This also helps with breaking down the job in to manageable portions.

Minimalism helps my ADHD a ton! Being minimalistic not only with my belongings but also my to-do lists, relationships, diet, and commitments takes a lot off my plate. I’m not frantic all the time and I can actually handle the things I do take on. My brain can’t handle overload so there’s only room for a select few things, people, and activities. The ones I really enjoy and don’t stress me out. Stress makes my ADHD so much worse. I can’t pair down everything in my life but minimizing the things I can has made a world of difference.

Great!! Since a year now I plan my entire day with Google Cal and I use colors. Like Red for important tasks. Blue for appointments, green for sport, etc. You can even use smileys to make it more fun and easy to recognise. I also work best with the pomodoro technique so I divided most of my tasks into 30 minutes blocks.

I started my schedule by using Google calendar to create a todo list for each day with 15 minute appointments for each task. I adjusted them to the actual start & end times as I went along. I then created repeats where it made sense. Other tasks I can search for and make copies of so they come with built-in time estimates.

I've recently started putting my schedule for the week into my bujo weekly spread. I feel like it helps me recognize that my time is limited, and it allows me to block out times for the things on my to-do list. Also, the creative-yet-structured-yet-repetitive task of drawing out the grid and filling in blocks of "time" is oddly soothing. :)

This a trick I use to clear time for myself. I put time for myself in my calendar/diary even for the mundane things like paying bills/tidying out my cupboards/time for myself for a hobby etc so that 1. I remember but also 2. If someone wants me to go and do something I can honestly say "I can't make it I already have something in my diary on that day/date/time. This can really help if you have a tendency to take on too much for other people and your own stuff keeps getting left.

My favorite method that works for me (besides writing a master task list in my bujo) is sticky notes! I have different colored sticky notes for different areas of my life, and I only allow up to three sticky notes per catergory. They're plastered around my desk and surprisingly it helps more than writing things in my bujo - mostly because sometimes I'll forget to look in there to know what to do! Having them there in front of my face reminds me to get things done, and its super satisfying to rip them off my desk when done. :)

Every time you said "only one calendar" I silently corrected you in my head: "so, THREE calendars..." I have my phone calendar for making plans with other people quickly so I won't forget them, my wall calendar so I can see everything in the whole month at once, and my bullet journal for daily and weekly tasks and goals. As long as I take the time to make sure all three of them match up, it works great for me. Also, by the way, I learned about the bullet journal system from your video, and it works exceptionally well for my life! Thanks for introducing me to it!! Scheduling time for important but not urgent things is crucial. I also loved his point about deciding to do less but focusing on what you want to grow. That's a hard lesson to learn, but extremely important.

This episode really hit the nail on the head for this week. I decided that it would be a good idea to take a heavy course-load at my high school, be vice president for my model united nations club, intern at the neuroscience lab at my local university, and work on a science fair project with some school friends (we're doing a project on brain computer interfaces). As of now, I haven't been doing as much as I wanted to with my club and the science fair project, school is decent (I may or may not be 3 days late on an AP physics assignment whoops), and I also may or may not have submitted a review article for my lab two days after it was due for editing and now some people are angry with me because I messed their schedule up and gah. It's going to be published though yippee and it is on the metabolic regulation of reproduction with a focus on the hypothalamus. Quick side note, the brain is really complicated. Then there's also my weekly tennis lesson, I was considering starting a fashion blog, I still need to get my driver's license and take (and study for) the SATs. Hmmm.....Actually writing this all out made me realize that I might've spread thinner than I originally anticipated. Great.

I did scheduling with work - projects and lots of tasks. One of the things that worked well for me was prioritising - urgent, hi, med, low. But then what I did was I had 'Fiddly Fridays'. That was the afternoon where small tasks (took no longer than an hour, that were low or med priority, but had a high impact cosmetically, or functionally) were done as many as possible. And then left again until the next Fiddly Friday. Urgent and hi priority tasks happened first, were scheduled for 4.5 days, but low priority tasks that generally were never done because we never got time to do low priority tasks but contributed a lot to the users frustration levels were taken care of. As a consequence, the users frustration levels went down, and we ended up with more emotional space for the hi and urgent stuff so we did less out of stress. Also it helped to wind down for the weekend, and there was a clear slate for Monday. So yeah, taking time out to do the little unimportant things that matter is good.

I personally use a very complicated system which I of course built in time. I use Habitica for habits and dailies. I use Todoists to get things done (ironically, I don't like GTD method). I use Google calendar to manage my day. I use an app called Journey and another from the same developers called Moodcast to keep track of my internal and emotional life. And I have a lot of paper pads around my room to write down anything that is bothering me. Also simplenote is my long-term memory :D I know its a lot. But I think collectively they automatize everything and get out of the way for me to be a happier, more productive person. I strongly suggest all ADHD pals, to build a great structure that suits them and evolve it so it adapts their needs and different stages of their lives.

Good info, thanks. But a book that helped me when I had 2 young children and was totally overwhelmed is: ORGANISING FOR THE CREATIVE PERSON by Dorothy Lehmkuhl and Dolores Cotter Lamping. I cannot recommend this book highly enough! It taught me methods for managing time and tasks and paper and scheduling and us really easy to read, too. Buy one, and put in the time to read the chapter you most need, and work your way through everything else, and the mysteries of "How do other people DO this?!?!?!" start to fade! Maybe I should revisit this book now I have more time on my hands.... Great show, love love love it, please keep going! K x

Something that helped me. Accepting that "having more to do means that less gets done". Non-ADHD find hard to accept this, but that is their problem. So, when I am asked to add something more to my life, even if I have time for that, I just say "I'm lacking mental availability". Just so they don't think I'm being an idiot, I proceed to explain that I am working on two businesses at the same time, and I am already failing at some stuff. Basically, it's about keeping my to-do-list short.

It's so fun this is exactly one of the things I've been working on the passed year and a half. Now it happens that i actually hear myself go through what I've got planned for the day and then pause and go "That's not going to happen, right?" Usually because my partner gives me a certain look of disbelief (yay I've learnt to recognize the look). He's the best by the way, I use him as an impulse control. Sometimes when I'm tempted to go YES!!! That sounds super awesome fun!! I start by saying exactly that and then say "I'll just have to check with X first" as we live together with two kids asking him feels reasonable.

Do you have a video about how people can get distracted mid-task attempting lol...like making the bed one minute and somehow ending up in the kitchen doing dishes (and the last task was never finished) - how did that happen? where did I fall off? lol

Hahaha i do the same thing... i have stuck a huge note in front of my bed that says " Focus on one thing at a time!". It's like a chant I have to keep repeating to myself coz it's so easy to get carried away.

Maybe you're using objects as task reminders. You're in the middle of cleaning your bed, but there's a dirty cup on the nightstand, so you take it to the sink, see the piles of dishes, and go ahead and do them since they're in front of you. But then the bed's no longer in view, so you forget about it. For me, part of the problem is I don't trust myself to remember to do things later or to have the motivation to do them later, so I end up doing things at the odd times when both memory and motivation are working.

Sky diving was pretty sweet but kind of expensive I did it last year for Valentines Day I would recommend Santa Barbara it's really cool. Alan Brown let me know about this planner I'm digging called "monaplanner." Kinda like the bullet journal but broken down a bit differently. I use it for scheduling most of my appointments and IEP's I have to keep track of and meetings. But yeah the moving back and forth between calendars is frustrating so I use a lot of visual reminders through my work space to keep me on track of tasks that need to be done. Other than that I have my students schedules so I just go off those and that stays pretty constant. Keep doing work with Eric he's an awesome resource for more research based information on strategies and accommodations. That LCSW knowledge isn't found in a google search, he's the real deal people...you usually pay money for this kind of information.

I've been timing myself on all my daily tasks and pretty much everything I do, but here's the deal I can do the same thing the next day and it takes even longer. I'm a SAHM (stay at home mom) plus I homeschool my kids. Seems like there are always unexpected things that happen. And I'm finding that in less I rush myself I will take all day to do simple tasks. I'm good with the using on calendar, this is something I have done as a teenager and was very helpful as an adult, but the key is you actually have to look at it often to remember what's coming up. I'm the master of overloading my to do list! I'm starting to see that I can make a brain dump list of to do's and I can put about 3 of them on my daily list and get them done. I don't know if it's my ADHD or if it's just plain hard work to manage a home and kids. It's a good thing the boss loves me and is very forgiving! I love your videos they are very helpful!

I was wondering if you could do a video on how you incorporate using a bullet journal and Google Calendar. That is something I am having a challenge with balancing. I too like using a bullet journal or any type of journal to clear my head and plan but I also need to use Google Calendar. Using Google Calendar versus adding a written calendar to my journal is easier to me because it's easier to move things around when things change. Thanks for your videos. You are really inspiring and encouraging and fun to watch.

Thank you so much for this time management series of videos. I've got ADD myself and clearly I need the help since I barely make videos anymore and I'm watching this video at 4am, which is extra bad cause I've got church at 10am today, that means about 6 hours sleep if I go to bed (and manage to fall asleep) immediately. lets just say I may end up missing church, which I really don't want to. Also I finally got a day planner, so that's exciting, It's the classic size happy planner and I love it. I got the one that's also an adult colouring book covers, and various places within the book. It's going to be so colourful by the end of the year. 😜😃

thanks, I love my planner so much, it's working better than any other planner ever has so far for me, so that's good. Unfortunately I didn't make it to church, slept straight through my alarm, oh well, try again next week. thankfully my church records every service and puts it online, so at least I can watch it that way.

I use Fantastical It can sync multiple calendars (including Google Cal) and it lets you add reminders The best thing about it is that it lets you add stuff really easily using natural language input - e.g. 'remind me to clean the car tomorrow evening' - kind of like Siri except typing (plus stuff you add using Siri also shows up in Fantastical)

Another hint that I can give you is that I like to use a highlighter to cross off things from my to do list. That way, I can still see what I've accomplished and maybe even put the date and time on it, if someone has a question about when I sent that email or handed in that assignment, etc.

Here's something that works for me, I am in high-school and I am often late to online class...So I started setting up alarm. But that makes it quite annoying...So I fun messages in the alarm. And I change them weekly. It barely takes 10 minutes. I also usually have my breakfast later than the school time, so I have two eggs everyday which doesn't take a lot of time to eat or make. So I usually have 10 minutes break between classes so I have my breakfast in those. I use that breakfast time to relax and make my to-do list for the day. By the way, sorry if this very unclear!

btw I used to always think highlighters were silly, as in people who high lighted textbooks were silly (because i was lucky enough to read the book once). But holy ______ highlighters are helpful with organizing your to do lists, or organizing complex tasks into groups/subgroups. Separating things that need to be done for instance 24 hours, this week, next month, and helping you avoid spending time on priorities that arent important this week is invaluable - and yea they are right.. its up to you to determine these. This has helped me spread out the fluctuations in business out - as in there are highs and lows, because the more you manage these better your dampens the stochasticness of reality. No more 85 weeks coupled with 20 hour weeks that you feel obliged to inflate to 40 hour weeksbecause everyone else has normal 40 hour weeks... proper panning can illuminate most of this disparity! goodnight yolks

I keep 2 calendars. One huge wipe off one (actually 3 months of) on the dining room wall. The other is a smaller planner that I keep in my purse. They get updated after I get home from work. So..my table is ground zero for organizing and planning. Also bill paying. The file box is in reach of the table as well. Otherwise I'll get squirrelled!!

Great episodes and great channel! Improving at using my planner and tweaking it over and over (sometimes with my life coach helping) has improved my life a lot! Each little new feature improves things more. Like when I added a habit tracker it very quickly got me doing the habits more consistently. A pre-step to that was writing out a braindump list of habit ideas to start or strengthen. Not everything on that list was specific enough so another step is specifying the ones not clear enough. No wonder they weren't becoming habits. They weren't clarified or committed to enough or visually on my radar each day! I love planners so much now I'm designing one to sell.

I use rescuetime.com to track my time on how long I'm doing (or not) doing something. It tracks everything you do on your computer and browsers. How much time I spent in photoshop. How much time spending on Facebook. How much time on anything. What I like more about it is I don't have to clock in or clock out. I would always forget to stop a timer (or even start it) Rescue time is ALWAYS tracking. Some people may not like it because they think it's too much big brother but I use it daily. I first started using it to track how much time I wasted daily. Now I use it to track how much time I spend working clients projects (and how much time I waste).
