How To Replace The Serpentine Belt And Tensioner On A BMW 3 Series

Brian Eslick from How to Automotive www.howtoautomo... takes you step-by-step through the process of replacing the serpentine belt and tensioner on a BMW 3 Series E90 with the N51 or N52 6 Cylinder Engine. It is common for the belt tensioner to begin to walk off the belt when it is failing. The bolt holding the tensioner in place is aluminum, which is a one time use bolt. It needs to be torqued down and a torque angle applied.

I watched a few videos and I didn't understand the 90 degree turn but you made it really simple. Torque to 25nm and go 90 degrees further. Also, like the fact that you aren't moving the entire air box.

Ok the problem I saw and had using your video to do my 04 bmw x3 2.5i e83. My tensioner has two 13mm bolts "not external torx" when you say "I'll remove the tensioner center bolt, the only bolt" well my car is not at all like yours. I think the big problem was you need to specify what type of tensioner you have? Maybe what options the e83 your working on is? Would have saved me a headache. Other than that hood video

I have a 335xi and the air inlets for the cold air intake span right across the tensioner pulley. I am definitely gonna relocate them to the left side of the engine instead of above the chargepipe because there is no room and you have to remove the fan to gain better access to take the inlets out 😐

Does this process work on 2006 BMW 330i? The car was parked for about 3 weeks , I came turned the engine on the car started I didn’t drove the car but pup the hook to replace air filter and I found the belt lose, oil leak, and the battery sign displayed on dash.... still don’t know what cause the oil leak , any help for my inquiry will be appropriate it and thank you in advance

Great video! I ran into a problem when removing the bolt from the tensioner. The bolt broke in half so the end part is still stuck, however the tensioner did come off. But now I don’t know how to remove the end half of the bolt. Can anyone help me please? Thanks in advance!
