Saw a video of someone using a jig over the log to guide his chainsaw to cut these. Seemed to work pretty good without all the measuring. These are much tighter joints though for sure.

easiest version of dovetail in the video, more advance dovetail with vertical wind-blocking and giving the notch more stability is way more fun to cut :D

When marking the final cut with the level I assume one would mark both sides before cutting rather than marking and cutting one side at a time?

With modern tools it's a shame to have nice thick logs and not have them scribed and fit together almost air tight.
