I went years thinking that I couldn’t play barre chords until recently. Turns out I had the technique down, but the action on the guitar I was practicing on was too high. Once I tried on a properly setup guitar it didn’t seem so hard. Just another factor to keep in mind. Good luck!

You are exactly right and I see so many “experts” on KZbin never bother to explain that most cheaper (and sometimes even expensive) guitars are out of whack and the strings need to be brought down closer to the fretboard. This is why so many people just give up rather than get good advice about taking their guitars in to get the strings adjusted properly.

A tiny tip I just noticed for boney fingers. When your index finger cant quite squeeze a string or two for the full bar, you can kinda push or pull or finger back and forth. Itll feel like your trying to roll/ a pencil or straw up and down your fingers (like 🤌 -🫰) really fast but with the guitar neck/strings. Hope this helps 🤷‍♂️

As a few of you have commented, I want to additionally verify and emphasize that the main root of the problem stems from guitars not properly being setup right to give low action of the strings along the fretboard( front of the guitar neck). Most beginners and even intermediates are playing guitars where the strings are way too high off the fretboard. This is why it is difficult to get all your strings down without fatigue and great effort. Many people just give up even though they are doing everything talked about in this video. The adjustment of the guitar requires just having a shop sand down the bottom bridge, which brings the strings down closer to the guitar neck without creating buzz. Many people think the truss rod needs turning, but 9 times out of 10 all that needs to be done is sanding the bottom bridge. When completed the guitar should play like butter, and you will be amazed how much easier and what a pleasure it is to play barre chords up and down the guitar. Go get your guitar fixed no matter what your level you won’t be sorry.

Another good tip is with the strumming hand, use the forearm of that hand and squeeze it towards your body, this will swing the guitar fretboard forward. This puts less pressure on the thumb of the fretting hand and pushes the frets towards your fingers, not the other way around.

Make sure the shape is correct. Practice in front of a mirror or front camera of ur phone. It'll be slow in the beginning, but you'll get there eventually

I don't have a problem with barre chords if they are on the 3rd or the 5th fret. But higher barre chords seem impossible to play.

The best way is to practice barre chords on an acoustic guitar (either nylon or steel) until they are clean. Then, playing them on electric is so easy 😊

You are correct. The explanation is incomplete at best. Some contend that arm angle can be used to improve barre chords. Really, while the concept of rolling your index finger onto its outside edge a bit is helpful, the “secret” is the same as it always is: Practice. If you’re struggling, practice more.

The guitar setup is also crucial. My wife has a really cheap acoustic guitar with ridiculously high action on the fretboard and it's a nightmare to play. When I play my father's acoustic guitar, it's 10 times easier to play. All my chords sound cleaner and better. Your guitar has to also be set up right, especially when you're a beginner. I'm intermediate and it's still tough with a poorly set up guitar.

Don't play them: basic barre chords usually have double octives/fifths - finger the root on the 6th or 5th strings, and play the 3rd, 5th, and/or other elements of the chord on the remaining strings. Barre chords aren't ever NECESSARY.
