I loved most of the things about the video, except for one thing. There is no such thing as reinforcing fear, you simply cannot reinforce an emotion, and there will be more damage done if a dog is not comforted during a stressfull time. Comforting is helping the dog to make a connection that the experience doesn't have to be all that bad, and that nice things happen during the experience. Otherwise, the puppy not only is still seeing the experience badly (cause the are no signs of it being in any way positive), it will be as scared as before or even more, and even a dog may not see their owner as their protector anymore, and won't seek out for guidance of their owner if in need, and won't be able to deal with their future problems and emotions Other than that I'm glad I learned that puppy class in not all about puppies playing, I will definitely be more selective about the instructors

Hi there! What would you suggest as the best way to have your pup in the car on the way to these socialization trips? At 8-12 weeks should we be crating them in the car or using a dog seat/harness?
@hannafaith11604 жыл бұрын
From the research that I’ve done, a car/travel crate is the safest option. The second safest is a crash tested car harness. A car/travel crate is much different than a regular wire crate. Professionals say that a wire crate is even more dangerous than just letting your dog sit in the car. Wire can be bent very easily and can injure a dog very badly. I recommend RuffLand crates or a Kurgo car harness.

@HowToTrainADreamDog Жыл бұрын
If you can give the dog a chance to take a potty break before you go, or in an unused corner of the parking lot, that would probably be best. Just take some paper towels and a poo bag with you and even if there's a little mess, it's very easy to clean up in stores.

Any tips for how to socialize puppy with children or neighbors at the park/school/sidewalk etc? Usually results in an overexcited puppy bouncing around on her leash. What do I say to manage the mob of kids that runs over to pet her? Can I provide them and the puppy with some direction so they can meet in a healthy way?
@HowToTrainADreamDog Жыл бұрын
Until the puppy has had some training and practice being calm, it's best not to let kids meet her. This will make her behavior stronger. The way we work on this is to get far enough away that she can be calm and see the kids, while rewarding her for checking in with you. Slowly as you progress in training you get closer and closer, as she remains calm. That's a simplified version but if you check out this video and pay attention to the "Threshold" concept, you'll see what I mean! kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5izh5yQfK1mqbs

Would it be ok to put puppy in a stroller and walk around the neighbourhood to get them familiar with sounds/smells/ people/other dogs before they are fully vaccinated?
@HowToTrainADreamDog10 ай бұрын
While stollers may sound like a good idea, we don't recommend this technique. If your pup becomes scared of the things they see or here they have no way of getting away from those scary things because they are strapped into a stoller. This means we are forcing them to face their fears. This will create a negative assoication that can last a lifetime. The better way to work on socialization and exposure training is to take it slow and watch your dog for body language that indicates they are ready to move closer or further away from scary stuff. Take a look at this video for more info kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5vbhoivrr2qkKM

We've been taking our puppy to pet stores but keeping him in our arms. (He's only 7 lbs right now.) Should we stop doing that until he's older?
@HowToTrainADreamDog Жыл бұрын
We don't recommend pet stores (too overwhelming!) nor carrying him during exposure sessions. When you're carrying him you're taking away his ability to get distance from scary things, and you're not able to notice his subtle body language changes that indicate stress. It's best to allow him the agency to explore on his own, in safe areas like parking lots or sports fields. The key to exposure training is that it must be positive to be beneficial.

How do we ever take him anywhere outside of our home and socialize him? Can’t go on vacation (camping), can’t go to dog park, can’t go to any park, can’t be groomed, can’t be boarded?
@Cosmicat013 жыл бұрын
Here's the simple answer. Just continue on with your life doing what a normal dog would do. Vaccines don't always do the good people say and imo your dog will end up being a more healthy and long lived dog. Hooe this helps

This is the only video I've found that explained how to socialize with other dogs specifically before all vaccinations are complete. One thing I'm wondering though is, before all vaccines, is it safe to let the puppy on the ground or floors where other dogs and people may have carried parva in on their paws/shoes? My breeder is very adamant about not doing that.

How do you socialize a puppy to rain/ thunderstorm sounds?
@HowToTrainADreamDog2 жыл бұрын
When dealing with fear of a noise, the best course of action is to work on counter conditioning techniques to help your puppy overcome their fear. This means we want to set up controlled training sessions where your pup can remain calm yet receive positive reinforcement when the trigger is present, yet at a distance or at low volumes. One great technique we use is to find a similar sound on KZbin and play it at a low volume while giving out training treats or kibble. When you start the sound, the treats are delivered. When you stop the sound, the treats stopIt will be important to work on this at your puppy’s pace, long before “the show” happens. This is called pre-training and is an important part of preparing our dogs for scary situations. Additionally, this video contains more great information on fear in dogs.
