🐶 Thanks for watching! In the comments below, tell me one of your biggest challenges with potty training your puppy?
@nathanperry5173
@nathanperry5173 5 жыл бұрын
My biggest challenge is that I give my puppy too much freedom to walk around the house. I also let her play too long before I take her out. Most of the time, I feel like I could have prevented my puppy from having the potty accident in the house.

A challenge that I think I'm going to have is when I leave my puppy home alone for a while and dont have a pee pad it wont be able to hold it in until I get home. Do you think I should still not use one?

I just found your videos. This is day #3 owning our 12 week old puppy. Potty training has gone well. I don’t have treats but give praise when he potties outside. Guess I’ll need to buy treats. Right now he’s confined in our large kitchen until he’s house broken. Sleeping has been an issue and so far he’s not a fan of his crate. We will continue working on this. I’m 64, not much energy so am hoping my standard poodle puppy will continue doing good! Thanks for your videos!

That is an excellent suggestion about limiting my puppy's access to 1 room until they can be trusted. I used to let my puppy follow me around the house but I sometimes get distracted and miss my puppy's signal and than I turn around and they have had an accident on the floor, and I missed it.

Yes, limiting access is only temporary until they can earn another room or be trusted...which takes time as your puppy grows and matures

I adopted a puppy two days ago, and I'm thankful for the tips. I've been rewarding her when she comes back to me after going potty instead of right when she goes, I'll make sure to change the routine a little.

I’ve had my puppy for only 3 days now and I don’t have any experience in training a dog! So I bought her a crate and have been sleeping on the floor next to her, and have been taking her out like every hour. I was rewarding her when we got back in, but I will try rewarding her outside after she goes! She really hasn’t been too bad but I feel like I’m watching a baby..constantly following and redirecting the puppy! We have limited her to just the kitchen for now, with little trips throughout the rest of the house. Thanks for the tips, I will update in a few weeks!

Mitchelle - brought a puppy yesterday in a crate from Pennsylvania to NJ in a CRATE! Following puppy schedule from your website and no potty accidents yet (5/5 score). So much so he waited in his crate till I cleared the snow to create a place for him. Pee accidents is a thumbs down. I took him out, waited in cold storm cold and he did business on getting inside. One more thing - spreading food in crate worked effortlessly for positive association !!!! He cries a little bit when he wakes up. I wasnt aware puppies can have a very loud crying Thanks a ton for all the videos.

I’m a combat veteran who just got a 18 month old, long-haired chihuahua that was rescued from bad living conditions and surviving parvovirus treatment. I’ve had Jasper 4days and he is definitely not doing well. He is my ESA, yet I kind of lost it tonight. I’ve had trouble getting him to respond to my commands and now know a new approach to dealing with the frustration of commands and properly communicating for potty training. I want to thank you for teaching me positive reinforcement and responsible access inside. I’d rather encourage him with love and understanding as opposed to barking orders like I was a dog. He’s just like a toddler, always wanting to be picked up and held, which I love and need from an emotional support aspect. In retrospect, I realize now I have to put in the work (with empathy) first so that I don’t get overwhelmed. It seems like this is one of those moments of “this is going to hurt me more than it does you.” I remember how my father used to say that right before a spanking. I want to make this a team/family alliance rather than a who’s got the bigger balls. Thank you so much.

Getting dogs from (bad living situations) can be harder to train. I trained dogs for years, still do. Training does take consistency but can be hard if said dog has had emotional or physically abuse. And bad living enviroments. They may be used to peeing in one room, or outside. Until they are rescued which makes it harder to be trained. Ive trained all ages. It can be done with most. But does take time.

Ok long story but I took over a lease on an apartment from a friend and also took over care of the puppy that was already living there. My friend was using puppy pads in the corner of the living room on the carpet. I've been working on cleaning the area but it is rough and the smell is bad. The puppy is about 8 months old and was honestly really neglected. Left alone for insane amounts of time. Sometimes the only interaction she would get was someone coming in changing out the puppy pads and refilling her dog dishes. Once she got comfortable with me I was able to get a collar on her and take her outside. I watched your other video about the puppy pads and I took them out of the apartment all together. She will pee outside but won't poo. I have her on scheduled potty breaks when we wake up, when I come home for lunch, when I get home and once or twice more before bed. I try and reward her when she goes outside but she won't take treats from me if we are outside, but I do give her lots of love. Last night right after we went outside and she peed I got in the shower and she went to the corner where the pads used to be and peed and pooped. I took her outside again after that just to show her this is where we do that. She also won't go in front of me if she goes in the apartment. She does it when I'm in another room. I got a dog gate to keep her in the kitchen when I'm at work. She isn't crate trained and I don't have a kennel for her. Any advice?

Hi. I’m just a dog owner that read your comments and first want to say that I think it is so wonderful of you to care about this poor neglected dog:(( Clearly it’s had a rough start . I know you have to use an anti enzyme spray on those areas to completely remove the smells. It’s definitely engraved upon the dog’s brain to go there. Michelle here has tips for crate training. Try the mental stimulation games too? Sounds like the sweetheart was totally unstimulated :(. Bless you for trying ! Good luck and I hope you can work things out. Maybe doggie classes near you ? Just another thought . ❤️❤️❤️❤️

It's best if you keep a log of her schedule because her potty habits are probably not regular every 2 hours. She'll have to go more frequently when she plays and less when she's resting. It will also be important to keep her freedom limited in the house. This free kit can help you! www.howtotrainadreamdog.com

The best thing I could say is to get some pet gates. You could also try putting obstacles (boxes, hampers, bins, etc.) high enough for you to step over, but too high for the pup to overcome.

She hasn’t been potty trained or trained in general and has started going in the house. She may go pee outside but go shortly after in the house still. Can we still use this approach or do we need to try something different due to her age? Thanks

I’m working on getting my puppy to potty outside (yes, we started in the house and before you say it, yes I know bad idea 😭) I know his routine now and when he has to go but he’s so use to using the pads. For example, I took him out yesterday for about 20 minutes when I got home from work (no accidents In his kennel) and he would not go. Soon as we get inside, he goes straight to the pads! We are ordering the spray today and bells for sure! My family tells me to do the whole nose thing and I’m just like no you can do that with your dog I’m not doing it with mine.

Issue with 1 room training is, you are still teaching to use bathroom inside. Doggy doors are best. Best thing to do is have the pup with you as much as possible. Every single time it whines, wakes up, does circles, starts sniffing or eats/drinks water then take it outside. Take it for many walks & try to have a safe enclosed location outside where they can go thru out the day. They love using potty outside. Use Amonia to clean up accidents. I use amonia & vinegar. Clorox wont even take their scent off the floor. Also every time they potty outside give praise, hugs kisses treats etc. But remember a treat can trigger a poop. I train labs & goldens for a living. I have house trained many. Crates are never used for punishment. Thanks. Any questions, feel free to ask.

Im getting my 8 week old puppy next week and I live on the 11th floor of a condo. I'm worried she wont be able to hold her bladder long enough (for a while at least) to make it all the way down and outside. Also I dont have a secure potty area. Beyond using pee pads do you have any suggestions?

Hi Michele. This was an excellent video. I really enjoy your teaching style (you know your subject matter, you are brief, and clearly make your point), so thank you. I'm picking up my little Natty today. One of the issues I have been lamenting over is whether to use/not use pee pads in the house. I had the same thought process as you, but honestly I was thinking, "just in case." After watching your video, I have commited to not use them (just do it the right way instead of stretching out the process),

Even if your puppy is not yet fully vaccinated, it’s important to take them out for potty breaks and to safely and positively expose them to new things. The importance of positive exposure during this critical period will have lasting effects and far outweighs the risk of diseases. After the second set of shots you can set up a playdate with a vaccinated dog with a similar temperament. Here is our New Puppy Starter Kit to get you started off on the right paw! howtotrainadreamdog.com

We are having a hard time predicting their pooping schedule...when our 2 puppies wake up, almost always they pee AND poo. Then they have breakfast, but after waiting the 10-15 min after, most of the time there's nothing. So we crate them, but they may be in there for 40 min (crating each time there's no poo). If we don't crate them and let them play and run, a poo comes, but it's not in the poo spot. Any suggestions?
@HowToTrainADreamDog
@HowToTrainADreamDog Жыл бұрын
How long have your puppies been home? It takes some time to figure out their natural schedule. If they are going outside together, they might also be distracting each other and not getting the job done. They might also need some movement (running, sniffing) in order to get ready for a poo. Have you seen our free kit with great potty training advice? www.howtotrainadreamdog.com Check out our video on littermates too. It contains some important information on littermate syndrome and how to train two puppies at the same time: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppC1dXyJbt6ijNE

@@HowToTrainADreamDog Thanks for the feedback! They've been home about 4 weeks now. I do think movement is needed but then they're out running around and poo in any area of the yard, which I don't want. We got your training program and after a few days of properly tracking, I think they take a bit longer than 10-15m for the poo. I will for sure watch the littermates video and how to train 2 dogs at the same time! Thanks!

When I take her In it's not much longer than 5 to 15 minutes she's got to go again. How frequently is to frequent or is this fairly normal?

Depending on the size of your puppy, 15 minutes can be normal. However, if your puppy is going potty every 5 minutes, we recommend you consult with a veterinarian!
