Doc shows how to fix bare spots in your warm season lawns. The same really applies to all lawns. Make your bare spots healthy and the grass will want to grow there. If you have bare spots that are pure dirt, they will not support a healthy lawn grass and it will not want to grow there. Doc uses Dirt Booster compost and some PGF Balance. Then loosens the soil to help with air and drainage.

I used your idea of stealing runners in my lawn last year. I’m in Chattanooga where the soil is half rock and half solid clay so scarifying the areas was out of the question. I used a long 5/8” punch and a sledgehammer to punch holes about 4” deep in a grid pattern, then I had allowed runners to get into the mulch around a large shrub so that I could easily harvest runners with roots to tuck down into the holes. Then I put potting soil over the whole area. By the end of the summer all the bare areas were completely filled in. Great tip!

Doc you have to get yourself a garden weasel to loosen up the soil for bare spots. It’s a life changer. I break up the soil with it, throw some seed down, and than lightly run the weasel over the seed to get the seed just under the soil.

I just did this method on an area that I have been having problems getting grass to grow. I used my edger and cut up the ground. Then I spread some top soil. Then spread some seed, used my rake to get good seed to soil contact. Been watering it 2-3x a day depending on weather. And in less than a week I have growth. Thanks Doc

@@aporra06 I will most likely go with Roundup (glyphosate). In the past I have tried other products and they did not work. I was trying not to harm the SA grass. And now the dallisgrass makes up 50% of the backyard (60' x 30'). thx, tww

Yes, you never want put down pre-emergent before planting any type of grass seed. I would think at least six months before you plant, no pre-emergent should be put down. One thing I do, is take a bulb planter, and the day after a good rain, when the soil is damp, go out and take plugs and plant the plugs around the yard in bare spots, then fill in the plug holes.

Hey all. So I used a quick release lawn fertilizer on my lawn about 4-5 weeks ago. I over applied it and caused some fertilizer burn throughout my yard. Ive been watering it consistantly since it burned, and have started to see new growth coming through the yellow/brown areas. The question I have is, how long should I wait until I fertilize again? I'll be using a slow release fertilizer this time in hope of not causing and fert burn. Thanks.

Hey Doc, i had an issue w/ weeds, poa, and mix of broadleaf this year. I had missed my fall pre-emergent treatment and in mid-feb I used the Image, 2-4D, surfactant mixture. I may have been a bit heavy handed as i wanted zero weeds in my yard and now the Bermuda is not growing and you can see where i applied. The rest of the areas not treated look fantastic .. i was surprised to see the results as the lawn was not in transition mode yet. any advice to help get the recovery process moving along? I followed your program last year and it was perfect, this year not so much.

Doc, apparently my pre emergent was either put out too late or coverage was not complete because I'm dealing with multiple weeds, mostly clover. What would you recommend as you say you generally don't like negatives during the growing season? I've been spot treating with 24D, but it feels like an uphill battle.
