@@ff2154 I am genuinely tired of people guarding themselves with the cliché old: "It's my opinion" or "It's a matter of subjectivity". Yes, it is, but partially, since there are actual standards when it comes to acting since it involves an actual catalogue of factors. But yes, I do agree the actresses you mentioned are pretty good, however, basically All of them are highly experienced, so the comparative of standards change. Its actresses in their 40's/50's against an actress in her 20's. Kind of unfair if you ask me, since I believe Anya is doing great for the age she has. However, I must accept you have got a "good" taste and I agree, Anya will probably be better as she gathers more experience.

Okay, so in the beginning he eats a burnt marshmallow but his teeth are already dirty from the previous ones. Since setting yourself on fire means being in love (in this video), roasting a marshmallow over that fire and enjoying it means that you enjoy watching someone agonizing in love for you. So basically it means that he approves of only this kind of love, a huge one that makes a fire of him. He made others to burn for him, that's why his teeth are dirty, and he wants to feel it too. So when she tries to light him up, she's not serious, she's just flirting. He doesn't react and that makes her irritated. Also she gets hurt in the process (almost lights herself up - he smiles at that, she's already in his net) so it's risky for her, she might fall too. And the half-circle turn, when the camera moves at 1:08 means that she's halfway through to being in love. (It correlates with the same moment at 2:14 but that time that will be a full circle - completely in love). She tries to capture his attention in other ways, like climbing over that table, but that doesn't help her. He's still waiting for her to give up. She's not going to flirt and just leave him, she has to fall for him for real. Her body betrays her every time she tries to leave. The servants are the symbol of his will and they bring her back on her Seat at the table (name of this movie by the way) until she's ready. I'm not sure what they tell her at 2:46, it's either "you're in love now you've gone full circle" lol or "you can leave now", because at first she doesn't believ, but then she either gets scared or glad that she can finally leave - no one's stopping her now, and she tries to escape but she understands that she can't (because she really doesn't want to leave him). And then she gets serious, he finally sees that and burns, she enjoys that (by eating a marshmallow), but it doesn't last for long. She's not going to move on from this and do this to other men (like we know he did to other women many times before), she won't be a player because these feeling immediately become reciprocated, she falls for him. And everything goes according to his plan, he gets the love he's been waiting for, when both of you are in love without playing around

L get toasted
@shiveeraisonmars5 жыл бұрын
The video starts with hozier eating a toasted marshmallow (as we find out later it could have possibly been toasted on a burning person, perhaps a previous lover) When the girl comes in, she looks scared, she knows he has the upper hand in their relationship. Probably because he is more conniving and experienced. But the determined look on her face when she’s flicking the matches may indicate that she’s up for the challenge and wants to try and shift the power dynamic. He smiles, watches her fail, knowing her attempts are futile. She keeps flicking the matches and ends up burning her own hand. That’s when she gets up and tries to leave but she’s unable to. She gives in to him, lets him control her- maybe a part of her even likes it. When she finally gains control, she sets him on fire and he’s pleased- she’s learned well. He’s proud of her. She thinks she’s won, toasts a marshmallow on her ex lovers burning form only for her smugness to be cut short when she realises she’s about to burn too. This perhaps implies that he’s changed her, the very fibre of her being- made her ruthless. But this isn’t good for her, it’s unhealthy and she’s unable to maintain future relationships

There was a livestream done by Hozier for this album a while back, and in it he basically says Dinner & Diatribes is his crack at the feeling of being in social situations that you really, really don't want to be in. So like, for example, dinner parties (where it's primarily driven by small talk.) or meeting acquaintances, etc. Personally, I think he does a phenomenal job of encapsulating the feeling. I've been in conversations where all I'm waiting for is the end of it.. and would do anything to bring that end faster. Like, for example, setting it/them on fire. I don't like small talk, and would do literally ANYTHING to remove it from my life so I feel this song, haha. But I definitely see Hades/Persephone vibes too.

People interpret the video differently as being stuck in an abusive relationship, home etc, but for me its her fight inside her own psyche with the shadow self, the predator, who just sits and watches her from the other side of the table. From the first moment it seems as if she woke up; gained consciousness - recognized his presence in her psyche. She goes through a roller-coaster of emotions, tries to burn him, tries to escape, even tries to sedate him, but nothing seems to work as he is not moving but the servants around try to fight her on his behalf. He says no words. And eventually she burns him thinking it will affect him whereas in fact the “servants” burn her as well as a sign that these two concepts are inseparable, he is her, he is inside her mind field, and she cannot escape him without being erased herself. And the servant’s role as in the lyrics as well is too insult her, put her in a place, try to put her down - diatribes. And the whole dinner takes place in her mind with all the characters representing different aspects of her psyche. Live laugh love Hozier

I think a lot of people are missing the meaning of Diatribes here... It's a bitter verbal attack towards something or someone... Watching this and taking that into consideration my interpretation of this song is two lovers who fall in love with each other through intellectual sparring. Sometimes using others to do their bidding, both try not to show how impressed they are with each attempt but finding themselves combusting with attraction. At times becoming offended and literally attacking and when not getting the reaction they want they flirt or attempt physically seducing the other with looks or actions. Obviously, one is more experienced than the other. Ah, the appeal of manipulation, darkness, grotesque and the unseemly, toxicity defined.
@lucehleblanc2 жыл бұрын
I think you're on to something but I don't think the video and the lyrics are inherently connected. the video is open to far more interpretation than the lyrics themselves. the lyrics tell a tale of an obligatory stuffy meeting with his lover's friends which he does NOT want to go to. at some point she sends him a mischievous look and his mind starts running wild about what she's planning for after this hell of a dinner. the video is much more antagonistic than the song itself almost like the dinner itself and not the fantasy he's imagining. I think people are falling into a pit assuming because he's in his own music video that his character must be the perspective of the lyrics, when Ann's character is the only one actually singing the song. my interpretation is she's trying to get a reaction out of him to no avail, eventually she gets frustrated and tries to leave, but due to the social obligations she really can't. more attempts to either get a reaction or to escape are met with a bitter reminder of the social situation she's in. she's stuck and her date keeps smiling like he's in control cause he's around his friends. eventually she does get him to react, he's in flames with either lust or anger, maybe both. after relishing in her success, his friends throw a match to her.
@lucehleblanc2 жыл бұрын
notice how the butler's keep propping her up right when she gets out of line. and when she gets to the door she tries the handles, she looks back at a crowd of judgemental faces and begrudgingly sits back down. the social implications are the only thing keeping her down, or keeping her from escaping.

This gives me Hades and Phersephone vibes but in a more abusive way. Persephone tries to flee from the underworld but Hades wouldn't let her because he is obsessed with her beauty. Eventually she gains her freedom by setting Hades on fire and "killing" him with the help of Hecate (the girl who gives her the matches), but as she is close to her way out, Thanatos (the servant) , finds what happened to Hades, catches her, and also sets her on fire as an act of ravange(i like to think Thanatos waas in love with Hades in this scenario) never letting her see the upperworld ever again.

She actually never gains her freedom completely. When Hades captivated persephon the god helios(sun) saw it. Goddess Demetra was missing her daughter adn she start searching for her, by being transformed to an old woman. God helios was sad of her sorrow and dispair and he divulge to her where persephone is. This time, Demetra was in a place, still transformed, with a royal family that was really kind to her. For rewarding the family for their kindness, she would put on fire every night the Prince named Demophon ,because that would make him immortal. But his mother saw her and was alarmed. Demetra revealed herself to them and she demanded to build her a temple and she lived there.The Goddess asked for help, from the other gods of olympus, to release her daughter, and she said that if zeus will not help her she will not let the earth blossom anymore.(she was the goddess of agriculture). Zeus was terrified from her threat and send hermes to the underworld to take persephone. However hades knew that if persephone would eat food while being on the underworld would be connected with it, and she wouldn't leave so easy. So, he gave her a pomegranate and she ate 6 seeds of it. Eventually, due to her action, zeus decided to release her but only for six months every year(spring and summer) and the rest six months (autumn and winter) to go back to the underworld with hades , which symbolises the bad weather, the withering of the flowers and trees etc. cause her mother Demetra feels sad not being with her daughter.

The music video adds a lot to the song lyrics-Social obligations are difficult to maneuver when you’re insanely attracted to someone yet feel required to stay where you are simply because others are around. I think the idea of the flame represents something taboo that they both share, an intimate moment among a table full of people that they desperately want to have. They desperately want to leave and be alone together, but feel tied down by this pressure.

@niyaziburakkuscu41255 жыл бұрын
I think the girl can't leave because it would be running away from the problems in a relationship. We also see her reaching to someone behind hozier and that doesn't work either. Diatribes means confronting: so no side ways to the relationships, she needs to face the problems head on, and it does backfire. The girl has problems too, if it came to it, she will burn too(as fire is the cleansing of the problems in the video) but we don't see the problems since we are watching from her perspective.

At the end of the video, Hozier’s character is just vibing while he’s straight-up on fire because this is exactly the “kind of love [he’s] been dreaming of,” even if it’s destructive. Just like in the song, Hozier’s character is passively fantasizing about this woman he pines for, daring and inviting her to do unspeakable things with him. Anya’s character, however, is more conflicted about her desires. In the song, Hozier entreats a woman to take a more, *ahem,* active role. Maybe Anya’s character feels apprehensive or out of her depth. I don’t think it’s about abuse as much as toxicity.

Ever since I saw The Menu, I've thought of this music video. There are certain paralelles between Margot and this woman trapped in a hellish, seemingly neverending dinner, but in the end, Erin/Margot makes it out, and we don't know if she ever does here... and somehow, either way, the ending fits. It's hopeless whether she gets out or not. She's already tasted the food.

Idk if this is right, but basically here's what I took from this video: It starts with him eating a marshmallow, his teeth are black, presumably from eating a lot of them, hes watching her like a creep obviously, and she starts throwing matches to get rid of him. This obviously doesn't work, and he develops more control over her, making her dance provocatively for him, and she's afraid. The waitstaff is helping him, by pulling her back and making her move whenever she stops or tries to get away, the guests just watch her torment, apathetic. Then the waiters at her sides start whispering to her and she tries to run again, it fails, and now a guest is offering her more matches, this time when she throws it, it lights. She roasts a marshmallow on his burning body. Then, the waiter throws a match at her, we don't see it light, so I'm assuming it didn't, which means she's now in his place. She took pleasure (the marshmallow) in his pain (the fire) and became like him, so now the others are trying to destroy her aswell so they can be free too. Idk if any of this is right, it's just my take on it lol

Blah to idealizing a toxic relationship and convincing yourself it's something it's not.

@@mishi144 I know there's so much glorifying of toxic relationships and the relationship in the video is certainly toxic but the lyrics are different. I don't think it's toxic, just difficult

@@shymaasalem1961 Idk, I'm in a good relationship, I truly love my partner and I believe my partner does too, but it's actually a very peaceful relationship. Peaceful doesn't mean boring. But there's no trouble and it's actually very enjoyable. I hope it lasts for a very long time, because it's cozy, gentle, caring and loving. We're not playing games with each other. It's easy. I would have agreed when I was younger that trouble was an inherent part of a relationship but it's most likely because I was not in a good place myself and my partners were not either and we did hurt each other in some ways so there was trouble. Nowadays the only "trouble" I have is finding ways to make my partner happy and see them smile.

the acting in this video is crazy good. The guy that lights her on fire in the end. The expression on his face is amazing.
