After watching this a few times, I think that the child in the video isn't theirs. In the beginning it's just the couple and they break into a home to find the child there, probably abandoned and abused. The couple just "adopts" him and they become a family. But the cops catch up to them :( The kid got to experience more happiness while he was with them, than when he was with his real family... even though they're criminals. Edit: There can be so many different stories from this one song. I remember Hozier saying in some interview that he likes that his music is interpreted differently by everyone. I would love to know what everyone else sees when they watch/listen to this song.

The couple broke into a house to steal but to their surprise, they found a child in a worrisome condition. They took the child with them, gave him love and time that he will cherish his entire life. But the couple got caught by the police and the child was separated from them. The kiss at last gave the child hope that he is special, he is loved. The coupe gave the child a reason to live on no matter what.

I know most people relate this song to romantic love but, after watching this video, my mind goes to familial love towards the child. A couple of criminals on the run (that mostly got to that point because of a difficult past) sees a child in a circumstance that will lead to a future that's just as tragic as theirs. Them deciding to give him any amount of happiness for as long and however they can. Finding joy in spite of their past and present situation with an inevitable future closing in. And, despite all of their lost innocence, they still feel hopeful in seeing the boy so happy and finding peace within themselves in realizing that they're still capable of experiencing selfless love. Ultimately, their chivalry is punished and justice is a bittersweet thing, but their love for their family stays intact despite the end of their journey together. Using those last moments with each other to say that they don't regret a second of it, that they were worthy of love, and that their bitter past doesn't get to make them bitter people. Yeah, I legit cried while watching this at 5am.

@@Emily_Hurley Not their child, although in the beginning we are led to believe they are the parents because of the same mole on the forehead of the child and Hozier's. But in the instrumental it is revealed they just found the child in an abandoned house.

I read somewhere that the song is about his love for a married woman, unavailable but irresistible to him nonetheless. And his feelings of...shame or possibly regret for pursuing her in any way. To be fair I feel like Hozier’s videos are more often than not just a visual artistic expression that accompanies the song, not necessarily directly related to it. For instance, movement’s lyrics seem to me to be about an infatuation with a lover who’s awakened things inside of him he forgot were ever there. Yet the video is Sergei Polulin dancing and chasing different personalities/ versions of himself. Which he also seems to end up pretty scraped up in the end of an endless cycle. Although I can’t deny that I got a very similar feeling from the video you described. Heart wrenching and beautiful. Also very relatable for me personally.
@annesoares4524 Жыл бұрын
I know this song is an allegory that talks about wanting something and kot being able to have it. But is also a song about all those who are seen as "devils", the ones that always come across as the villains no matter how hard they try to be the hero. Is about felling like you don´t deserve to be loved, at the same time you look at someone who has everything you don´t: the innocence, the beauty, the tenderness. And you fear that if you allow yourself to love them, you´ll ruin all the good in them. But yet, they make you fell like a person again, a human being. At the end, that´s all we are right? Our fears should never stop us from experiencing love in its purest form. Love is redemption.

I always thought of it as his comparison to feeling like the one who has corrupted a tragic, magical, beauty. Babe There's something lonesome about you Something so wholesome about you Get closer to me No tired sighs, no rolling eyes, no irony No 'who cares', no vacant stares, no time for me Honey, you're familiar like my mirror years ago Idealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on its sword Innocence died screaming, honey, ask me I should know I slithered here from Eden just to sit outside your door Babe, there's something wretched about this Something so precious about this Where to begin Babe, there's something broken about this I might be hoping about this O what a sin To the strand a picnic plan for you and me A rope in hand for your other man to hang from a tree Honey, you're familiar like my mirror years ago Idealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on its sword Innocence died screaming, honey, ask me I should know I slithered here from Eden just to sit outside your door Honey, you're familiar like my mirror years ago Idealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on its sword Innocence died screaming, honey, ask me I should know I slithered here from Eden just to hide outside your door

I don't know who Kate McGrath is but she's certainly lovely. I love this video because I am an adult with a traumatic childhood. And for just a minute this little boy had something real that he will remember for the rest of his life. And while this is not a real-life situation, I can assure these situations do exist and it's moments like these that helped to get us through. That's my take on this video and it is now so very near and dear to my heart . . .

Beside the fact that all his songs bring heavy emotions/thoughts, I tend to have the most love towards this song and its accompanying video. Not necessarily my favorite on the album (though it's hard to choose a favorite), I think it to be one of the most well-written songs. Once you get the underlying message of it, it brings out a lot of emotions. I feel so overwhelmed yet so at peace after hearing it. From Eden is a brilliant piece of work. And the music video- it's definitely my favorite. Hozier is so underrated, and his talent is phenomenal. He's so unique and his music is so intelligent... it's hard to find that in music these days. I'll never tire of listening to him.

+Abraham Hernandez Obviously, all his songs are open to interruption so don't strictly believe mine, but this is my opinion. In his Track-By-Track series, he explained it was originally told from the perspective of the devil looking at something small and innocent. This element is used in the music video, and I hear the most of this idea in the song. For a more realistic twist, it could be a person who has done much wrong and compares himself to the devil but cherishes the innocent lover in his life. His lover brings memories of his former self, and this sinful person is now at this innocent lover's mercy. Just my thoughts. :)

From Heaven: Babe, they say there’s blackness lurking about you, something so malice about you. And I do agree. Babe, there's passion boiling within you, so you’d better hold me around you. And I will not flee. Don’t patronise, no fool’s surprise, no tyranny. No goodnight prayers, no devil’s snares, no time for thee. Darlin’, love’s peculiar, that’s sure something angels know. Shred my halo like a ribbon; wrap my wings inside your coat. Rinse the white light, gleaming; in the closet, shut the door. I flittered here from Heaven just to sip from your dark soul. Babe, if you’re so questionable about this, then why do you dither with darkness? Go follow Him. Babe, there’s nothing about you I won’t kiss. For you, I must stray from the lightness. Oh, what a sin. The darkest land, the highest stand, for you and me. Feathers and thorns, in the sheets downstairs, we forget occasionally. You’d say, “You’re familiar like my mirror years ago. Idealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on his sword. Innocence died screaming, honey, ask me I should know. I slithered here from Eden just to sit outside your door.” Darlin’, love’s peculiar, that’s sure something angels know. Shred my halo like a ribbon; wrap my wings inside your coat. Rinse the white light, gleaming; in the closet, shut the door. You slithered here from Eden and I fell so far to fall.

The guy who "slithers" from Eden is clearly a reference to the serpent in the Garden of Eden, there to tempt this woman, the object of his desire, into sin. There is a reference to the "other man" she will be cheating on. She is more hesitant to engage in this affair, while the guy shares that he once would have felt the same moral reservations, but experience has taken away that idealism/innocence/chivalry. Brilliant song, brilliant lyrics....totally relevant to most of us too!

I can't tell you how many times I have listened to this song. I know it has a meaning that you intended for it but for me it means so much more especially right now. "Babe, there's something wretched about this Something so precious about this Oh what a sin" Her diagnosis is so horrible , yet she is the sweetest bundle of joy She is so pure and happy and content while I'm over here falling apart I just wanted to share to let you know how powerful this song has been for me through this

I wish I could make everyone understand real good music, but not with society nowadays, nope.

This kind of music gets appretiation not because of the amount of people that like it, this kind of music does not need quantity. Furthermore, permormers like Hozier don't need or seek such. Music like this gets remembered because it touches your insides and it is irrelevant how much souls it had touched. Quality of music is not measured by quantity of admirers, so don't worry. I grew up with a rough childhood, nowhere this rough but this video touches my heart very deeply. For just a moment in time, this child has "normal". I have strived to give this to my own children and, thankfully, mission accomplished! With the help of some very special people in our lives
@mattk5110 жыл бұрын
Not sure how accurate this is, but what I took from both the original song and this video was the concept of sin. The song seems to depict the serpent/Devil in an almost sympathetic light. Although the serpent planned on killing Adam, Hozier suggests it was out of his love for Eve, and the serpent seems to know this isn't necessarily right ("Honey, you're familiar like my mirror years ago" - he loves her for her good qualities, something he, a fallen angel, hasn't seen in himself for years). His sin, though morally wrong, came out of a place of love. This video, at least how I took it the first time watching, seems to echo that same point. Though the couple was knowingly doing wrong, their love for the child was obvious. At the end of the day, his well-being and protection was their priority; their sins came from a place of love. Maybe I'm way off, but regardless, this is one hell of a song and a great video to accompany it.

@JackySwords10 жыл бұрын
I think you're close, but I think the kid is supposed to be the devil in the video. The evil guitar solo ends when they find him, and his eye has no pupil at the end. He, I believe, is the one that called the cops, to get rid of Adam (Hozier, in this case) so that he could be with the girl.
@mattk5110 жыл бұрын
Connor Murphy I hadn't thought of that the first time around, that makes perfect sense to me! What a great song/video.
@TateBirchmore10 жыл бұрын
I think that's a pretty good interpretation. I agree with some things and I think a truly good music video is open to interpretation and means something a little different for everybody. In my interpretation, I think that the child is the reflection of Hozier in his youth and innocence and that the line "idealism sits in prison" is represented by Hozier being arrested and that the idealism of being a musical artist who is rising in fame can also be somewhat limiting since you are SO busy ALL of the time. I believe that the child is an embodiment of himself years ago, and that the woman is also a representation of his mirror in a different way. The innocent child ends up with the human connection, and the artist ends up in a sort of prison. I almost think the blue gum may represent something like youth and innocence since it is so prominent in the shots, and note that Hozier is smoking a cigarette and is the only one not chewing gum. There is also a focus on the child being handed money (a $100 bill?) and that money is something that can take away from innocence. I think that the serpent in the song represents temptation and that it sits outside the door of humanity, but is removed from it nonetheless.

I dont really agree but I can see why. Both songs are musically and lyrically excellent. The biggest difference is while Take Me to Church is dark and almost menacing (made me feel almost uncomfortable the first time I heard it), this song has a lighter tone that is much more welcoming. @@danieluzoma899 what Ember Filled Sky said! you can tell by clapping to the beat - the emphasis is generally the strongest on the first beat of a measure and new phrases of music tend to begin on the first beat (or just before the first beat, called a pickup). there's a section of this song that switches to 4/4 (4 beats per measure; when you clap it the emphasis will fall most often on the first beat and there will be no incomplete measures in the phrase) but then goes back to 5/4 when the main melody returns.

The visual storytelling is as richly poetic as Hozier's lyrics. 4:30-4:50 is transcendently beautiful.

Some one has to make a a movie about this story.... Its so heart breaking. A dtory of an abused child found by "criminals" we fall in love with them they run from the cops then eventually get caught. But when they take the guy into the car the kid runs to him and hughs him. The cops have to pull the kid away from him. Sadly the child goes back to the his parents but the girl fights for him to adopt him. This story has no happy ending as they say no bc she is a criminal and the guy is in jail. Then the second movie about 6 years later the guy gets out and the kid runs away with them far far away. Happy ending.. This could be the new movie that everyone talks about and falls inlove with

sebastian almeida Or it could have a bittersweet ending where they prove that the kid's real parents were abusive so he doesn't have to go back to them anymore, but he still can't go back to the criminal family. He ends up with really nice adoptive parents but he never forgets the couple who saved him.

"We can't leave this kid here. Look at him." Eve gestured at the kid, who was staring up at them with large brown eyes. Jesus, thought Adam, I've seen cows with smaller eyes. "We aren't bringing him, Eve. The last thing I need is a kidnapping charge." "Are you fucking kidding me? This kid is getting the life beaten out of him and you're worried about a fucking kidnapping charge?" "Those bruises could be from an accident, Eve. He's a kid. Stuff like that happens all the time." Eve glared at him. "You don't even believe that. I can see it in your eyes. You know just as well as I do that bruises like that aren't made by an accident." Adam tried again. "He'll just slow us down, Eve. Besides, how is dragging him into a life of crime any better than leaving him here?" "Because at least then he'll have a chance. Please, Adam." Eve gave him a look that made Adam want to kick himself. She was right, and they both knew it. In the distance, Adam could hear the sirens of the police. They had to leave. Letting out an aggravated sigh, he knelt down and started to scoop up the boy in his arms. The kid squirmed and sank his teeth into Adam's hand, right in the fleshy part of his thumb. "Fucking Christ!" swore Adam, dropping him and yanking his hand protectively to his chest. "The little bastard bit me!" The boy darted away and hid behind Eve, who was roaring with laughter. "Grab the kid," growled Adam, "before I change my mind." Eve gently picked up the boy, who smiled and buried his face into her dark hair. "You're going home, little buddy," Eve said quietly. *Four Years Later* The police had come. Adam's worst fears were coming true. He could hear them, pounding on the door. "This is Officer Rivera! I have a warrant for your arrest for kidnapping Sam Ericson! Open this door!" Eve was looking at him, holding Sam close to her. They were both huddled against the wall so if the cops looked in they wouldn't see them. Adam swallowed as he realized what he had to do. Eve knew it too; tears were gently streaming from her eyes. Adam kissed Eve one last time and ruffled Sam's hair. "Look after her, kid. I'll be back soon," he said, trying to sound more upbeat than he felt. Adam walked over to the door and opened it. The police were ready for him.

Ugh, Hozier can literally do no wrong when it comes to his art. He just has a way of expressing things that kills me with its elegance and perfection. Whomever directed this video has a mind very like that of Hozier, I think, and that's an amazing thing. This video couldn't have been better for this song. Bravo Hozier, you blow me away every single day.

I also read that he directed it himself. So his father was a blues drummer, his mother is a painter and his brother a film producer... Hozier is a singer, songwriter, guitarist and film director now. I wonder how long it will take before he masters drumming and painting as well...
