@@isisalves1953 Mavis Staples is a famous singer, as was Nina Simone. Hozier names these people because he believes they all sang/wrote songs in support of those who were oppressed. Mavis Staples is on the full version of the song.

@@isisalves1953 Mavis Staples is the singer he recorded this song with originally, she's a black rights activist and she is alive. Nina is Nina Simone, this song is inspired by her, also a black rights activist and unfortunately now dead. The other people he cites in the song are all activists

You are just so right. I guess that's why I never get tired of watching every UTube clip of his, even if it is of the same song. Because no matter how many times he sings it, it always has a different feel. I think it is important to be able to retain a freshness in the approach on his part so that not only does the song not feel repetitive for us fans but for him as an artist as well. Or else even he himself will get tired of singing it. I mean, like he has been singing Take Me To Church live for nearly ten years now, but I still enjoy every rendition of it. Sometimes, there is more a defiance in the way he sings it. Other times, there is a feel of melancholy in it. I think this gives kudos to the kind of artist he is, so musically talented and really professional. And has a real respect and earnest dedication to his craft. He can only get better and better. Can't wait to see what he is able to achieve next in his musical career.

In an age of vapid lyrics and songs written by committees of 5-9 songwriters who end up copying songs from the 70's THIS. THIS is what songs are ABOUT. Songs are about raw emotion. POWER! I so LOVE hearing a song that gives me chills and must be listened to over and over again to find the subtle details and sparkling gems of phrases and musical movements from minor to major and back again... I feel hope again. Thank you.

Movement [Verse 1] I still watch you when you're groovin' As if through water from the bottom of a pool You're movin' without movin' And when you move, I'm moved You are a call to motion There, all of you a verb in perfect view Like Jonah on the ocean When you move, I'm moved [Pre-Chorus] When you move I'm put to mind of all that I wanna be When you move I could never define all that you are to me [Chorus] So move me, baby Shake like the bough of a willow tree You do it naturally Move me, baby [Verse 2] You are the rite of movement Its reasonin' made lucid and cool I know it's no improvement When you move, I move You're S. Polunin leapin' Or Fred Astaire in sequence Honey, you, you're Atlas in his sleepin' And when you move, I'm moved [Pre-Chorus] When you move I can recall somethin' that's gone from me When you move Honey, I'm put in awe of somethin' so flawed and free [Chorus] So move me, baby Shake like the bough of a willow tree You do it naturally Move me, baby So move me, baby Like you've nothin' left to prove And nothin' to lose Move me, baby [Bridge] Ooh, ooh, ooh Oh baby, oh baby Move like grey skies Move like a bird of paradise Move like an odd sight come out at night [Chorus] Move me, baby Shake like the bough of a willow tree You do it naturally Move me, baby So move me, baby Like you've nothin' left to lose And nothin' to prove Move me, baby So move me, baby Shake like the bough of a willow tree You do it naturally Move me, baby

Nina Cried Power [Verse 1: Hozier] It's not the waking, it's the rising It is the grounding of a foot uncompromising It's not forgoing of the lie It's not the opening of eyes It's not the waking, it's the rising It's not the shade, we should be past it It's the light, and it's the obstacle that casts it It's the heat that drives the light It's the fire it ignites It's not the waking, it's the rising It's not the song, it is the singing It's the heaven of a human spirit ringing It is the bringing of the line It is the bearing of the rhyme It's not the waking, it's the rising [Chorus: Hozier & Mavis Staples] And I could cry power (Power), power (Power) Power, Lord Nina cried power Billie cried power Mavis cried power And I could cry (Power) power, (Power) power Hey, power Curtis cried power Patti cried power Nina cried power [Verse 2: Hozier] It's not the wall, but what's behind it Oh, the fear of fellow man, it's mere assignment And everything that we're denied By keeping the divide It's not the waking, it's the rising [Chorus: Hozier & Mavis Staples] And I could cry power (Power), power (Power) Oh, power Nina cried power Lennon cried power James Brown cried power And I could cry (Power) power, (Power) power Hey, power B.B. cried power Joni cried power Nina cried power [Bridge: Mavis Staples] And I could cry power Power has been cried by those stronger than me Straight into the face that tells you to Rattle your chains if you love being free [Chorus: Hozier & Mavis Staples] But I could cry power (Power) 'Cause power is my love when my love reaches to me James Brown cried power Seeger cried power Marvin cried power Yeah ah, power James cried power Lennon cried power Patti cried power Billie, power Dylan, power Woody, power Nina cried power

Almost (Sweet Music) [Verse 1] I came in from the outside, burned out from a joy ride She likes to roll here in my ashes anyway Played from the bedside is "Stella by Starlight" That was my heart, the drums that start off "Night and Day" [Pre-Chorus 1] The same kind of music haunts her bedroom I'm almost me again, she's almost you [Chorus] I wouldn't know where to start Sweet music playing in the dark Be still, my foolish heart Don't ruin this on me I wouldn't know where to start Sweet music playing in the dark Be still, my foolish heart Don't ruin this on me [Verse 2] Tell me who, and I'll be thanking them The numbered lovers of Duke Ellington Do I owe each kiss to lip and cheek as soft as Chet can sing Let's get lost and let the good times roll Let smoke rings from this paper doll Blow sweet and thick 'til every thought of it don't mean a thing [Pre-Chorus 2] I got some colour back, she thinks so, too I laugh like me again, she laughs like you [Chorus] I wouldn't know where to start Sweet music playing in the dark Be still, my foolish heart Don't ruin this on me I wouldn't know where to start Sweet music playing in the dark Be still, my foolish heart Don't ruin this on me [Bridge] I wouldn't know where I wouldn't know where I wouldn't know where, I wouldn't know where I wouldn't, mmm I wouldn't know where I wouldn't know where I wouldn't know where, I wouldn't know where I wouldn't know [Verse 3] The very thought of you and am I blue? A love supreme seems far removed I get along without you very well some other nights Oh, the radio news reader chimes Reporting Russian lullabies She'll turn to me awake and ask, "Is everything alright?" And, Lord [Chorus] I wouldn't know where to start Sweet music playing in the dark Be still, my foolish heart Don't ruin this on me I wouldn't know where to start Sweet music playing in the dark Be still, my foolish heart Don't ruin this on me I wouldn't know where to start Sweet music playing in the dark (I wouldn't know where) Be still, my foolish heart Don't ruin this on me I wouldn't know where to start Sweet music playing in the dark (I wouldn't know where) Be still, my foolish heart Don't ruin this on me

Leave us to cry alone when we are lost in this world. Thats what we do to each other, without song we are but pawn whom beat the night. We are, we are, we aren't going anywhere far away when we cry apart. Take the brush and paint a picture of my life in your soul. We are alone when we cry alonewe are alone when we can't share our feelings in iur songs.
