My favorite thing about Hozier's music is how interpretative it is. So many say this song is sad, and I can see that, but when I first and continue to hear it, to me its about someone who falls in love with someone unconventional tbat is going through a rough time, likely something the singer has experienced in the past. Yet, the singer loves the person so much that they are willing to leave the easygoing-ness of their current life to be there for this person and be with them.
@Fallowsthorn2 жыл бұрын
You hit the nail on the head when you said "interpretative" - I was surprised to see people think this song is sad and your interpretation hadn't occurred to me, either. To me it sounds like the singer escaped from a toxic situation (the lowest-hanging fruit being some sort of repressive religious community, which is rather a theme for Hozier), and has since found freedom and validation in being and doing the things that community looked down on regardless of imposed morality. He's acting as the tempter waiting for the listener to realize they're trapped in the same or similar situation and to help them be a happier, less inhibited version of themself. ...Not to say that the singer's way is inherently better. He's jealous and possessive ("a rope in hand / for your other man / to hang from a tree") and at least metaphorically violent ("innocence died screaming / honey, ask me, I should know"). But he certainly doesn't feel guilty about it.

I couldn't agree more. I see this song as a sweet song as he said I slithered from Eden just to sit outside of your door. There's really something about the girl that he couldn't think of the good things and doesn't care abt it just to be with his love.

I thought it was the desperate-longing-happy feeling of being in love. Wanting and doing so much just to be around the person and yet in the end doing only just that. Probably because that's how I love. Dedicating everything to that one person but never really telling them it was all for them. Just hoping I've put enough love in whatever it was that they'll be able to recognize.

Yes. I understand. The first few notes stir a deeeeep pain inside of my, but by the time the chorus comes in so powerfully, like a wave of water on the ocean it just smoooooths the sand it mixes with. I remember listening to this when it came out, and I had just decided I wanted a divorce from my husband. Life should have been chaotic, but certain tracks like this one just crammed their way into my skull, reverberating, forevermore, moving me along like water and sand. Man, Hozier really milked that drunken conversation with Crowley! All jokes aside, I think this song is absolutely marvelous. The lyrics, the melody, the vibe... it has such a sadness to it, and yet it also has a certain lightness - like when you find solace in giving up hope... Babe, there’s something broken about this But I might be hoping about this Oh, what a sin [Pre-Chorus 2] To the strand a picnic planned for you and me A rope in hand for your other man to hang from a tree [Chorus] Honey you're familiar, like my mirror years ago Idealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on its sword Innocence died screaming, honey ask me I should know I slithered here from Eden, just to sit outside your door [Instrumental Bridge] [Chorus] Honey you're familiar, like my mirror years ago Idealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on its sword Innocence died screaming, honey ask me I should know I slithered here from Eden, just to hide outside your door
is the line “a rope in hand for your other man to hang from a tree” racist? whats the meaning if no?
@kripadhaubhadel4565 Жыл бұрын
@@yourheartinminedrumming i think its more like a double suicide idk
@d-_-b85584 ай бұрын
@@yourheartinminedrumming It's not racist or referring to suicide. The song is from the perspective of Lucifer/the serpent in the Garden of Eden talking to Eve. He wants Eve for himself. The "other man" he's referring to is Adam, saying he wants Adam to be dead and out of the picture so they can be together. It's also a reference to the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, since by eating from the tree, Adam (and Eve) doomed humanity to sin, and consequently death. So in a sense, the tree did lead to their death, symbolically "hanging" from the tree (also like the fruit that they ate.) There's a lot of symbolism at play.

OKAY here’s my hot take on how I like to think of this song: Satan (the serpent) falling in love with Eve, in the first verse it seems innocent and lovely but then in the second verse it starts to reveal itself as being more on the evil side. And like he could be saying “honey you’re familiar like my mirror years ago” like he reminds her of how he used to be this brilliant angel before he fell. Just something fun to think about 😊

Matthew John Pace Take Me to Church is a horrible song. It's hard to understand why anyone likes it. No lead guitar. No bass. No drums. Vocals are droning. Lyrics aren't that clever. It's just a dumb, poorly written song. I was pleasantly surprised to hear From Eden because I thought every song Hozier plays sucks based on the one song the radio plays.

IMO take me to the church has a dark, deep meaning and it's my favourite song right now. But I respect your opinion.
@JasonGastrich10 жыл бұрын
Matthew John Pace I've played guitar for 20 years and I can play more than a dozen instruments. I taught music lessons for a decade. The only things I find redeeming in this song are Hozier's disenchantment with church and infatuation with a woman. I am also part Irish, fwiw. Part of the reason why I'm sick of it is because Alt 98.7 FM and KROQ 106.7 FM have overplayed it. They haven't played even one of his other songs, even though songs like From Eden are newer. It takes a lot to impress me musically. In other words, if there are only vocals at the expense of the other instruments (that I now know they have), they better be off the chart and still I like a full band of instruments to keep me interested.

“I slithered here from Eden, just to hide outside your door” he likens himself to the ancient snake in the Garden of Eden who is the tempter and seducer. saying that he slithered from eden for me meant that 1. every evil comes from wanting to covet what’s not yours - like how the snake tempted Adam and Eve to grab the Divine prerogative; and 2. he willingly chose to leave behind something beautiful (like the possibility of having his own beautiful relationship made in the right way) just to be with someone who he’s not supposed to and cannot be with - which is very miserable. the song put it aptly: it’s a choice between Eden vs. the outside of someone’s door. i keep listening to this song everyday. so good!

Very few songs on the radio nowadays have the ability to inspire me and make me FEEL something. This song is one of those rare gems. Loved it instantly.

This song is grim as fuck. A lot of Hozier's songs are. It's cool it makes those people happy but it's kinda like the people that jammed out to Pump up kicks by Foster The People. You wonder if they hear the lyrics.

It's been some years now since the divorce. I still bear an incredible sense of pain and this song conjures that in such a profound way. I had this album playing continuous on my drives to and from work, Hozier my bard before and during the most troubling, disruptive parts of my life--my love leaving me, forcing me to leave, the love I had for her usurped by woe and misery. Now when I hear this sweet song it fills me with that nostalgic feeling, a sort of sweet pain for something that was before, that thing that is lost and will never be again. I listen to this song and wonder if there will ever be another that is fair, another darling of my affections. A part of me supposes it will simply never be so.

@meganleadon50209 жыл бұрын
SandyTheMaster yeah pretty much. It's about a man that has done bad things in his life and meets a girl who is innocent and pure "like his mirror years ago" and he wishes to be with her but she is in a relationship with another man. Though you can percieve the song however you wish, that's the beauty of music.

I guess I should feel lucky! I heard this song for the first time today, and my radio told me who it was... I thought I'd have no luck cause the info was coming out a bit crazy. Good thing I up-graded the stereo! haha... So happy I bumped into the wrong radio station this morning. This was the second song they played...

I didn't like that church song on the radio. But this album is getting some serious underground hype, so I had to check it out. This guy is amazing. Now all his songs are growing on me. Just ordered this album on vinyl. Cant wait to hear it on my new U-Turn turntable. I bet it is going to sound so much better than it already does.

Hozier is just so talented in his lyrics and music as well. He's not even appreciated enough. This makes me mad but I feel somehow honoured to be one of the few that listen to his songs. I love him so much.
