"to Bethlehem it slouched and then, must've caught a good look at you" is such a romantic and powerful line to me. he's telling his lover that she alone is the reason the apocalypse did not come to pass. the rough beast, slouching towards Bethlehem to be born, is so...scared? intimidated? stunned? by her that it fails to fulfill its apocalyptic destiny. he insinuates that the lover is the only reason the beast changed its mind and spared the human race. this is such an enormous, reverent claim to make about someone, yet he sings it so casually, as if it's just another sweet flirtation. in truth, he worships his lover so much to the point where she is god-like and all-powerful to him, and he sings it so. basically every line in the song is romantic, downplayed worship and i fucking love it.

Oh boy brace yourselves. It's a long read. Here's what I wrote: It’s a calm song. Haunting even. One of Hozier’s best songs ever. The repetition of the single note-guitar song structures the song like a chant-an ode to his lover. You can feel the admiration and love dripping from his voice. He’s gentle and colludes the song from exactly when he saw her. *When I first saw you The end was soon To Bethlehem It slouched (and then) Must've caught a good look at you* I feel like this song tells a story from centuries ago. Bethlehem. The end was near, the new messiah was slouching to his glory and power. The people and the land were in chaos. Just as the messiah was aiming towards Bethlehem, the people too were slowly starting to move. An unspoken decision to move from Bethlehem. Amidst the chaos of movement and migration, he saw her. He took the long journey/voyage to his advantage. He unintentionally observed her. A secret admiration, a new feeling. *Give your heart and soul to charity 'Cus the rest of you The best of you Honey, belongs to me* He is in awe of her beauty. He approaches her, lazily, and eyes her well. He tells her of his intentions. He is in love with her beauty. The possessive demeanor here is clear. ‘The best rest of you, the best of you’-he lusts for her body first because she already ‘belongs’ to him to devour. His lover is equally passionate and submissive to his desires. He asks her heart and soul to be given away--to him-a heartless and soul-less beggar, and she complies. The sexual encounters fuel their love and desires grow with their journey together. *Ain't it a gentle sound, the rolling in the graves Ain't it like thunder under earth, the sound it makes Ain't it exciting you, the rumble where you lay Ain't you my baby, ain't you my babe* The pre-choruses are my favorite parts of the song. The change from the chant-like guitar driven verses to the bass and harmony driven prechorus. He ‘corrupts’ her naivety. He influences her to think of all those bodies back in Bethlehem. Thinking of how they escaped and met in the journey to escape comforts him. He asks his lover to confirm their privileges-the privilege of being alive. The depth of his character is evident. He’s possessive, lust driven, love driven and dominating, yet gentle and warm. He asks her how relief (of escaping) sounds like the thunder they hear while they’re making love. He asks her how she rumbles with excitement when her climax is heightened. These rhetoric questionings need no answers. She’s agreeing with everything that he says. “Aint you my baby” is another reminder out of passion. He loves her like she’s her own child (sounds weird but think about the degree of love he must have for her). *Nothing f*cks with my baby Nothing can get a look in on my baby Nothing f*cks with my baby Nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing* As long as he lives, nothing can hurt her. Nobody gets to see her except him. Possessiveness. Nothing can fuck her up because it would have to go through him first. He worships her. He is devoted to her body. If I was born as a blackthorn tree I'd wanna be felled by you Held by you Fuel the pyre of your enemies Notice how tenderly he sings from here. Before, he wasn’t this delicate. He sang about her beauty and how she belonged to him. But starting here, he speaks of what he’s willing to sacrifice for her. Development of character. He kneels before her wishes now. If he were a blackthorn tree, he would want to be happily cut/killed by her if she pleased. Even after he dies, he would be the one who would burn her enemies. (An interesting choice of word ‘felled’. He’d, maybe, also want to be touched by her and her only.) *Ain't it warming you, the world gone up in flames Ain't it the life you, your lighting of the blaze Ain't it a waste they'd watch the throwing of the shade Ain't you my baby, ain't you my babe* He's telling her about where his commitment to her happiness and protection extends to. The hypothetical rebirth of Hozier as a blackthorn tree-at this point his love for her is endless and beyond his grave--him burning and ending her enemies. She’s ‘warm’ again. She’s safe again. His blaze gives her ‘life’ back. She’s secure inside the fire, inside what he’s burning for her. She’s trapped inside the fire, inside him, yet she’s safer inside--the consuming fire than when she’s out with ‘them’. The fire burns her, consumes her, but that’s his love burning. That’s his passion burning, literally, for her. ‘Them’, the spectators, that try to throw the ‘shade’ to the fire, meaning how they’re trying to put out the fire to save the woman-all futile, mortal, actions. It’s a waste to try to put it off because his love burns so passionately, nothing will kill the fire. And even after he’s gone, and she’s consumed wholly by the fire, it’ll keep on burning. Nothing will be able to get to her. Never. Because he would burn them all, just how he’d burn himself for her. This was my interpretation-so different than Hozier’s! I've been listening to this every single day multiple times on repeat ever since it was released. That’s the beauty of words, they vary from perspective to perspective. The ‘she’ and ‘woman’ in my interpretation may not necessarily be bound to a single gender, I hope you realize. If you made it this far, thank you for your patience haha. Anybody else up for their interpretations?

Haunting and bitter but sweet and ripe. You want to wrap your arms around it yet it burns when you touch it, so you endure the fact that it bakes your skin and gives you 3rd degree burns just to feel it. There is no way to truly describe what his music does to a human. The way his music burrows under your skin like an aggravated bug, like it is trying to find a place to belong.. the way every word has purpose and every flick of a finger is more than just him creating music. His music is food for the brain. You must not only listen, but think and discuss. His music inspires creativity, allows it to ooze out of you. It reminds you of memories you have never had, and things you have never experienced. Like a black ink streaming from every exit, out of your ears, your eyes, your mouth, the back of your neck. Like your hair is melting away into your flesh, all of your being becoming one big puddle of confusion. You are always brought back to a loving, humble, safe, and familiar place when listening to him.. you are always brought back home. And that is hard to do especially with more than one person. This man is a full representation of the man I would give my life to, the compassion, the deepness and the sensuality he sees his lover with, makes me refuse anything less than that, if this song makes me feel Wilder than any other man, it means I didn't found the one yet...

The picture that this song burned into my mind is so vivid that I wish I could have the talent of paiting to try and make it come to life... Two lovers on a bench, in a cliff. Below them, a city aching in flames. The sky is in tones of red and orange, like a vivid pyre. You can hear something godly roar down there as people scream and the ground rumbles so loudly it trembles like earthquakes, but they're so hipnotized by each other that they simply ignore what is coming.

I can literally listen to every version of a hozier and still want to hear more. Like the music video? Intense video of love and heartbreak and pain. Concert recording? Amazing, you can truly feel the love and support through the phone. Acoustic version? Intimate and it’s like he’s seeing your soul, speaking to you.
@theakaitaiyo6 жыл бұрын
I was just thinking about hearing the acoustic version to NFWMB. I interpreted the song as a devotion to protect and love someone at all cost (even if the person is detrimental to their being). Then to hear Hozier's explanation as that self awareness the same source has of their being and using that devoted affection to manipulate for their own agenda. It's interesting to hear the darkness to the lyrics. The lyrics, melody and tone is a departure from his previous work. I'm here for Hozier experimenting with his voice and lyrics.

The monster dragged itself to Bethlehem. along its path it laid it's eyes on the figure of the lady standing high on the mountain across the way, she sent a shiver down its spine. The lady looks down on the man sprawled at her feet , his eyes worship her, his heart cries out its devotion, his lips plead with her to stay with him as she reaps her joy. The woman is unbreakable and infinite she stands on high as she burns the world alive. And the man, he kisses the ground beneath her feet. Celebrates with an aching joy as the screams of the dead make the ground beneath their bodies shiver. He watches as the desperate try to pull her from her throne only to laugh as they scream and groan helpless and tortured by their ignorance of her power. The man kisses her icy skin reveling in the warmth of the burning world around them. His devotion feeds her fire as he prays at her pyre. She is untouchable. She is his and he is hers. They live, laugh and love as the world they knew is torn to tatters. The earth bleeds out beneath them. Devotion never ending.
