HP Chromebook x360 14c Review: A Solid Upgrade

I just got mine a few days ago. Probably paid more for it than I should have. Didn't shop around enough. With that being said, this is my first experience with a Chromebook. So far I love it! Screen size could be bigger. I am coming from a 17 inch Windows laptop to a 14 inch Chromebook but I'm adjusting. Also, as Robbie and others have mentioned, HP dropped the ball with screen brightness. It's not the worst in the world but could be a ton better. Speed and responsiveness is great. Everything is snappy and loads much quicker than my Windows laptop. This one has the fingerprint scanner but unless I am doing something wrong, I can't login from startup using fingerprint. I can only unlock it when its simply locked and and completely turned off. Keyboard and track pad are great and I am totally loving the back-lit keyboard.

@@tytownsend8219 yeah I don't understand that decision. I read a comment that someone thought it was for added security that you must use your password on login but I don't see how that is any better than using fingerprint.

I got an early black friday deal. 8g ram, 128 storeage, backlit keyboard, fingerprint scanner. I love the idea of the 2 in 1. I'm a happy camper, now just to personalize it :)

I bought the Core i3 version of this two months ago (£499 from John Lewis) and I'm very happy with it. What I like: the really great backlit keyboard and smooth trackpad, nice upward firing speakers, useful fingerprint scanner (to log back in from sleep mode without typing my password). What I don't like (being picky!): The physical volume buttons on the left side are pointless when you can just use the keyboard buttons that do exactly the same thing. I sometimes hit the 'volume up' key instead of the power button by mistake and it's a nuisance. The weight - it's really heavy so using it as a tablet for even a short time isn't at all comfortable. The fan - it's very noticeable to me, but fortunately it doesn't come on much, or for long. P.S. The screen brightness is fine for me as I only use it indoors, but I do need to keep it at around 80-90% of max brightness. If you're going to use it outside a lot then I would buy something else.

I actually own one of these laptops - and it has an i5 8gb 128gb storage. What a powerhouse! I love the laptop, and until it is unsupported, I'll be keeping it for a long time!

Another great review! I didn't search to see if you have a newer review, but the model reviewed here has now been superseded by the X360 14ct-cc000, which is a significant upgrade for $10 less, MSRP. The newest one has an 11th gen Core i3-1125G4 with 4 cores vs. 2, and 8MB L3 cache vs. 4MB. They must have watched your review, because the new one comes with either a 128GB or 256GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD! I've been using the 8th-gen Core i3 version since 12/2018, and it is a pleasure. The build quality is far above Acer, especially the keyboard and trackpad, and it looks brand new after over two years. Today, the fan started buzzing slightly, so I vacuumed the vents and ordered a new fan just in case. When this newest one goes on sale, I'll buy it and hand-me-down the original one.

@@KenGillam Yeah the bottom left of the trackpad will stick down intermittently. I selected this for my wife based on the video here and she loves it aside from this occasional problem - it's just frustrating when it happens once every day or two. A small thing, but you know?

If it makes you feel any better, the old HP Chromebook did reach about 220 nits. I maxed out the brightness on that device. But this device does reach 250 nits and I feel it's pretty bright around 220 nits. People may disagree.

I've just bought the old x360. A pre-owned one for £250 which is in immaculate condition with 18 month HP Warranty too! (Bargain) I can imagine the new one is brilliant as the old one I have I'm.well impressed with. Altho I do love that all new HP logo & overall looks, very clean. I guess I'll be passing on this upgrade for now ;-)

@@TomUK7 Sorry for the wording--no I do not recommend this just for students; but I do highly recommend it for students when comparing it (@ $399 with the current Best Buy student discount) to other Chromebooks for that price. The Lenovo Flex 5 is comparable, but the HP looks less utilitarian and feels just a bit better (and has a fingerprint scanner). I prefer the aesthetics of my Acer Spin 713 though it is a bit more expensive and does not have a fingerprint scanner. After all of that, I would absolutely recommend the HP x360 14c to anyone with no hesitation. Cheers!

i just got one at Best Buy on a Black Friday Deal. $250 off. I was looking at the Pixelbook Go and the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook2. I liked the chromebook because of the flip but i thought the keyboard was cheap. I really liked the Pixelbook Go as it had more elegance to it and I liked the keyboard better. However I wanted the option of it to flip. I also liked the concept of the Samsung Galaxy Book Flex 2 but I dont like windows coming from a Mac. The salesperson recommended this HP chromebook. It had the flip and the elegance I liked in the pixelbook go plus it was faster than the one I was looking at. The price was even better! So far I am enjoying it.

Just got mine. I have to say I like almost everything. However, the one glaring issue with this is the Front Facing Webcam. It is the worst I've used. The picture is totally grainy and both picture and video quality are flat out bad. Under the webcam settings, it says the picture quality is less than 1 megapixel, unbelievable. The video says its 720 but its clearly not. I did research on this device before purchasing and nowhere did reviews mention the front webcam besides saying it was HD. I'm not sure if all devices are like this or if mine is defective. In a time where the webcam is so important to stay connected with others, and education purposes, this wasn't a category to cut back on. Needless to say, I will be returning this item for something different.

Yours isn't defective -- the cam is lousy. The _highest_ resolution is 0.9MP, so everyone's results will be predictably bad. Was really disappointed since I assumed that, just like all the other specs on this Chromebook, the camera would be better than average. Looks like it's time for a stand-alone webcam.

I purchased this on with a deal from Best Buy after watching the unboxing video. I was concerned after seeing the Acer Spin 713 review so I went to Best Buy and found them displayed side-by-side. The screen on the 713 is certainly brighter but the HP screen looks more 'refined'. I have also read about the Acer screen flickering in some situations. The HP's 16:9 screen is better for email, spreadsheets, and my typical workflow. The build qualify is VERY good (better than the 713). The speakers are great and the screen is plenty bright for my use case. The camera is very good (much better than my Samsung Plus V2) and with the fingerprint sensor I knew I made the right decision--for me. If you are buying a Chromebook for work-from-home or school-from-home I highly recommend it--especially if it is on sale.

It seems to be a universal consensus that 3:2 screen size is better for workflow, not for media consumption. Odd that you think 16:9 is better for email and spreadsheets. I had the HP and Acer side by side at my house. The screen on the Acer is night and day better than the HP. Not only in brightness. Colors are better. Resolution is better, for me workflow 3:2 is better. The room I work in has natural light, not direct sunlight, and the HP never seemed bright enough for me, just as Robbie mentioned. My choice was HP for $399 or Acer for $529, I take the Acer anyday for the extra money. But everyone has certain needs and it seem the HP is very good machine for that price.

@@johnnyb4266 Depends what you mean by media. The Acer 713 with its 4:3 ratio is better for workflow. Google docs and sheets. Its better for reading web pages. Its a better ratio for reading reddit and even reading youtube comment section. But most movies and video are shot in 16:9, so viewing those on a 16:9 screen is better for that. So the HP would be better for that as the whole video would take up the screen. I've been using the Acer for a month and I don't even really notice the black bars on top and bottom when watching a video. The resolution and quality of the screen is just really top notch.

@@johnnyb4266 John the 16:9 is the ideal aspect ratio for video but it doesn't mean the screen is good. I really didn't like the screen quality of the HP. The Acer has more pixels for sharper images and text. The Acer has much better brightness and color. With these two its not just the difference in aspect ratio, the Acer is just a much better panel in my opinion. Now if the HP has the same screen quality just a different aspect ratio I might not be able to say get one vs the other. But in my opinion the Acer's screen in much better. Honestly I'm not sure I'd buy either of these for full MSRP. Right now the Acer is $629 at bestbuy. I paid $529 and got a free pair of $100 Jabra earbuds. The HP was going for $399 when this video came out and everyone was discussing it. Its now 629 at bestbuy. NO way is it worth $629. Students are getting $100 off the HP right now which would bring it down to $529 but I still think that is overpriced.

This has a more premium build than the Lenovo. The Lenovo has a 8gb of ram 128gb ssd option at costco. But the base model of the flex 5 only has 4gb of ram, this hp has a more premium build and 8gb of ram.. I'm pretty sure the Asus has a very premium build but it has the slower y processors, so don't be fooled by the i5 or i7 models

I've used both the Lenovo Flex and this HP never had to go full brightness. For the MSRP price, it's disappointing. But since I bought this HP at the same price as the Lenovo, I'm very happy, since it's an excellent device.

I bought this Chromebook after watching this video. I love the device so far! My first choice was the fabulous Acer flip 713 and the biggest reason why I switch to this one is the price. I paid 399 with a student discount and got a pair of Sony wireless headphones. It is fantastic for a second laptop.

I returned mine because when you hold the chromebook by either corner near the trackpad, the trackpad flexes and stops functioning. It will no longer click down and the touchpad acts like you are drag/dropping. I have done this with every single laptop previously and could not believe the trackpad was that bad. To see if it was just mine or all versions, I went to Best Buy and held the display chromebook by the corner and it did the same thing. The chromebook otherwise is a good machine, just will not work for using on the couch or sharing something on the screen.

Lenovo Flex 5 is around 400, but only has 4GB of ram... I really wish it had 8... and if it did, I would choose that. But considering you can sometimes get this laptop for 399, is it a better buy than the flex? I am concerned about the screen brightness.

In my opinion it's the perfect upgrade over the flex. The build is better quality overall, an actual glass trackpad. Same processor but it gives it the 8GB of RAM. Only $100 more at Best Buy, and they give you $100 headphones for $20 if you buy it, I think that might be a student deal. For me, 250 nits is perfect. I probably leave it at 80% brightness and I feel I'm getting enough... The last Chromebook x360 only got 220 nits total. I left it at 200 and felt underwhelmed. This feels much better

We were concerned about the brightness too but I mostly use it at work on break or while sitting on the couch and so far it's not that bad. I haven't watched a movie on it or one of my recorded shows on it yet but for $399 we're not sorry we bought it. Plus we got the free Sony headphones which we sold cheap so we got it actually cheaper than $399 after that and I sold an old Samsung Chromebook and my husband sold an S3 tab. But yeah we are happy with it so far only been a couple weeks. It's fast pretty love the back lit keyboard and the fingerprint sensor is great too.

@@chamomiami How funny yeah I had a $20 gift card plus $5 in rewards sold my Samsung Plus with 256 gig card for $280 to a co-worker gave her a good deal cause it beat meeting a stranger. Husband got $140 for his S3 tab from this kiosk at the mall that buys stuff back. The Sony headphones said they sold for $199 but the guy at the kiosk said they were the 1st Gen and they were already up to a 3rd and he sent me links to ebay where they sold for like 50 to 60 bucks. My husband opened his pair to just to try and didn't care for them and this man only wanted to give us 40 and 20 for the open box and I said no and ended up getting $125 for both pairs from someone. So we did pretty good and we love the Chromebook. Husband never had one and only thing I miss from my Samsung Plus is it came with a pen and had a slot for it. I never really used the pen much then decided to try it and loved it and now we want this HP USI pen really bad but it's not in stock. But the specs on this beat out my Samsung and I love the FP sensor and the backlit keyboard and 8 gigs of ram.

I just bought this exact one. And it is an awesome chromebook. My first chromebook was the famous $169 Lenovo Chromebook 3, and I loved that one. But it made me want more and this HP delivers. Nice. But... And I mean BUT. The trackpad... what is up with the tracking? It's not precise at all. I tried adjusting settings and it still suffers. My problem is with pointer precision, if I am trying to hit a small button, or a spot in text it's nearly impossible. Nearly being the keyword there. As it IS possible. But its lack of precision is infuriating. I hope there is a software update to help with this because otherwise this is close to perfect. As for price I picked this up at $429, and use a gift card for $100 to effectively bring down the price to $329. And for that price it's awesome.

@@maj113 thats 150 over the original 650 msrp 800 dollars is not cheap. cheap is in the 300 and below range. I got my x360 for 430 not "cheap" but a great deal for what ur getting. Feels like a 800 dollar hp envy

i got a HP chromebook looks just like this from best buy 150 around black friday as i type this. i freakin love it for 150. mine only comes with celeron n4020 (not bad for the price) and 4gb ram. looks physically identical to this one though, including FHD IPS display. For 150 I cant believe how good it is. unreal.

I do have creakiness at the bottom especially when I click with the trackpad with it on my lap. It feels like there's a gap with the plastic at the bottom that allows just enough room to where you can feel it dip a little. I wasn't doing this on purpose; I noticed it by accident.

yeah, i believe the i3 is better than the m3, m3 was a bridge between the intel atom and i3, so i3 is better, thus making this faster than pixlebook. but the quality of the pixlebook, better than this lol. you choose. personally when this is on sale like for 430 its better value

Is the offset to allow for the vent/fan on the bottom to breathe when the device is in tablet mode? I feel that if both sides were touching without any airflow in that area then the device would overheat with ease when used for long periods.

@@manpreetsingh7749 One of the things that attracted me to getting a Chromebook was that it has really good battery life and built-in antivirus. Chrome OS also won't just randomly highjack your Chromebook with hours of updating-- it prepares the update in the background (you won't even notice it) and when it's done you will get a message to say that when you want the update, you should restart your Chromebook. You also have the choice to follow through with the update, since it tells you what Chrome OS is updating (changing the icons, improving the features and layout, etc.). The only downside is that you can't download programs or software unless it is specifically for a Chromebook. You can, however, download apps from the google play store. I can have soooooo many browsers and apps open but it runs really smoothly without lag. Since many Chromebooks don't have a fan, you also avoid the annoying sound when it kicks up. That reason alone persuaded me to get a Chromebook. Hope I helped ;)

@Aston Dence word of warning though. I’ve been having problems with it. It often doesn’t wake up from sleep when. Open the lid. Very frustrating. I have to force restart it. I have done a hardware reset and a power wash as per support instructions and problem persists. If I could return it for a full refund I would but I’m beyond the 30 day return period. But I’ll try otherwise will have to endure a repair process. Seems this is a common occurrence with chrome books from what I’ve seen in forums.

I ordered a keyboard cover and a hard shell case for it. when I got them from Amazon, they both did't fit. after spending 2 hours searching for the correct one, I cannot find one that fits the new x360 14c-ca touch screen. Man, the laptop market is so stupid. I am looking for a new laptop for school, I spent like a week watching videos and reading articles. The only thing that seemed to be like a quality big Chromebook that was in my price range AND IN STOCK was the HP x360, a Chromebook you highly rated but was also a little older and I was hoping it would be cheaper. I didn't necessarily want a 2 in 1, but it was my only option. Best Buy currently has it on sale for $100 off for students, so I guess it's the winner, even though it was more than I wanted to spend ($529). Lo and behold, this video was just recommended to me, about a month after you published it, after I purchased my new Chrombook, and I just found out that I actually bought the HPx360 14c....cool? I guess that makes me happy? But why do these name changes always have to be so subtle. When did we get away from technology simply being the name plus the model name (i.e. I can't wait to get the Pixel 5).

Just bought the x360 14c i5 tiger lake 8GB RAM 256GB SSD... mainly to be able to use the Linux subsystem in a more performant way. mostly fine, BUT one major issue: when in tablet or tent mode, and I tap into an input field, no on board keyboard pops up ??? this is an essential functionality for a touch device, I'd reckon ;) now, when I active the on-screen-keyboard from the Accesibility setting, it ALWAYS pops up, even in laptop mode, when using touchpad or mouse to click into input field... what is going on here? any hint?

bought 14ct-cc000, and the audio is bad. Claims to be B & O designed, but the speakers can not handle the amp output. I just recorded my kid talking and singing, and played it back, default setting (Mic Vol and Spkr Vol at Full/max). Do, any of you guys observe this ? ..Not just clipping noise, there is some amount of High Freq glitch noise too.
