For uk there is no 400 nit option which is a bit annoying as screen is quite glossy so 300 nits might not be enough to see clearly in sunlight

Hope you don't need to open high res images with that 4GB RAM. Not meant as a criticism personally to you as it is your choice, but most new phones come with more now and don't have to run Windoze. The RAM configuration on these ultra thin laptops is fixed so seriously consider 8GB a minimum and 16GB as desirable if you open/edit large images / video etc.

I got the 15.6 inch Ryzen 7 one. It is a great slim and professional laptop, very quiet and the touchscreen (wit and without pen) is very usable. The laptop feels sturdy and isn't too heavy. Only con so far is the out of box experience. The built in microphone wasn't instantly recognized by windows because of the drivers. Took be quite some time to find the right drivers to fix the problem. Aside from that it is a incredibly good choice

@John Lear it can get pretty loud when you're stressing it and it gets hot if the fan isn't cranked when you're doing intensive work. Just turning it on won't turn on the fan. Just to note I have the ryzen 7 version that does not actually have smt so it's 8 cores 8 threads. I also have the 1000 nit screen option, which seems less bright than I would have thought and it doesn't support HDR. It smudges super easy and gets a little bit dim off-axis but I'm not sure if that's because the 1000 that one has a privacy filter. Other than that, I really enjoy the colors and the vibrancy of the screen and for media consumption it's pretty great. I'll answer any other questions ASAP if you need!

I don't know if she is as old as she looks or as young as she looks, but I definitely know, she is god darn strong in tech. I just recently got my self the Ryzen 5 model with AMD Graphics, full 1080 display, Bang and Olufsen Audio (whatever that means...) 1TB SSD and 32GB ram for $1,200! It also has full SD card support, lightning USB, 2 regular USB ports and a headphone jack. Kinda sucks that laptops these days don't have CD drives as I still like to burn CDs and watch movies on DVD, so I guess I'll have to buy one, and unfortunately the model I have also doesn't have an ethernet port, another thing I'll have to get at some point. Otherwise, definitely a big upgrade from my $300 5 year old HP laptop, but I'll definitely be keeping my old laptop for the cd drive for now.

Have you tested it, like until it freezes and tried to recover from it or simply restart the computer when it freezes? A friend of mine failed to do so (pressing the power key even for more than 10 secs didn't work) because the power key (not button) seems to be not hard wired like any other power buttons in other laptops. He had to wait til the battery ran out and then recharge-restart the Envy. If this happens to this model and any other particular models using the same power key, HP needs to fix it. Have no idea if this could be fixed through BIOS.

I'm looking for an effective laptop for study at the moment and I'm down to two or three choices, was trying to justify the price on this over the ASUS vivobooks. This review really helped sell me on this choice. I love the spectre but I just don't need all its features. I have a kick ass desktop at home so this is really just for uni work.

Hi, great job on the review! I am getting much different results when it comes to thermals. The unit I'm reviewing easily gets into the lower 90s when running benchmarks, and close to 100 degrees when bench marking games. I have the Ryzen 7 4700U configuration, which could account for the difference, but I'm surprised to see that our results are very different.

hi lisa! bought one of these in February off the HP website, just in time for it to become my main device while i was stuck at home during lockdown. Its handled all sorts of graphic and editing tasks that I originally had no intention of using it for. Slightly different, side camera switch different vent location and a fingerprint sensor below the keypad. I have the risen 7 . Great machine! fast decent battery and very solid compaired to the Lenovo it replaced. only complaint is the super glossy screen that you mention. Terrible to see anything other than your fingerprints when outside! love your reviews, best on the net XX

Your fingerprint sensor is under the keyboard? 🤔 And the speakers and the kill switch are situated differently? Cos I think, sry, if I'm wrong, that you have the 2019 model then and not the 2020.

Lisa coming with the hotness this week. I'm mostly into Lenovo these days. The Envy 13 is the first HP to turn my head in 10 years. I'm not sure the Envy 13 and Flex 5 are true competitors. HP's pricing is a bit slippery, similarly spec'd the HP is almost 2x as expensive.

That's a good point. I have been comparing the flex 5 with this. The key difference is build quality? The lenovo also comes with 16gb ram as a base model I believe.

I have the 2018 model of this laptop, I love it, but my issue comes into place with HP's driver support. Last HP signed display driver for my model was posted in May of 2019. Any attempts to install newer ones just causes the built in display to just show black. Other than the lack of HP driver support I do love it, and it's great for note taking.

I think the main difference is the placing of the speakers and the fingerprint sensor. The fingerprint sensor for the 2020 version is integrated in the keyboard not under it. And the speakers are not over the keyboard but on the backside of the laptop. The camera kill switch should also be integrated in the keyboard not at the side with the ports. From what I've read all mentioned above only applies to the new 2020 model

The small wrist-rest space on these HPs are the reason I will never buy one. They should have instead make the display taller and put the keyboard closer to the top edge. Xps, surface and macbooks are much better at this.

I agree. Years ago originally, I had an old Power PC that I used a lot for coding and writing; it was great. Then I became influenced by the smaller laptops, and bought a second gen Intel Macbook Pro 13. Both laptops were 16:10, but I felt the 13 was too small. I ended up buying an i7 Samsung 15.6”. That Intel i7 was completely underpowered, not to mention how it would overheat (couldn’t keep it on my lap while doing simulations). But the strange thing was how terrible the screen was, and that goofy 16:9 format felt as cramped as my 13” Macbook Pro. I would love to get a 16:10 Windows laptop with a Ryzen 9 4900H with or without a dedicated GP, and a 400 nits screen. I just can’t find one.

So true, I guess they're going for compactness but I think widescreen laptops are so bad to use. I prefer to have 16:10 and that extra bit of height really makes a difference.

yea i wanted to get the spectre x360 over the xps13, only thing that turned me off was that tiny trackpad that could be made bigger had they opted for a 16:10 (or 3:2 *gasp*) screen lmao

I like almost everything about this despite the lack of HDMI. It is still the most reliable port when you need to constantly hook up your laptop to projector in client's place. Still this will likely be the one to replace my aging 7 years old laptop. Quick question though, what's your thought on the durability of the drop jaw USB port? And if it's broken off over the years, will it still hold on to a USB cable/device? I tend to keep my stuffs for a long time.
