HP Omen 15 (Ryzen 7 4800H + GTX 1660TI): The Review

Wife is a teacher, her macbook air can't handle the current load of virtual classes, screen sharing, graphic creation, running background apps and all that stuff. So we got this as basically a desktop replacement that is portable. A bit overkill, but should have no issues with anything she throws at it, and hey I might get to use it to game. Only thing I gotta do is upgrade the RAM to 32gbs and I expect this thing to last a good 8 years. (My samsung chronos from 2012 is still running and currently my work from home station)

First: Great job with the crisp video you shot, great sound, great flow/tempo/editing and graphics, great integration of HP spec video... All very professional and polished. Secondly, what a nice Laptop: Beautiful display, EASY access to internals (no stupid screws under the feet), nice price for what you get. Lastly thought I would mention HP has a very good veterans/active duty military discount program - I saved a TON using it when I bought my ENVY x360 powered by RYZEN. Andrew, very nice review. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said that HP Omen 2020 is a nice blend of performance and price...I think HP has hit a homerun with this system. It's definitely an excellent buy for the money...I'm what you call a "value shopper". I like the expandability of it...up to 32GB of RAM is great and two SSD "slots" makes it a really great system for both content creators and gaming. And I like the fact that it's got a professional looking design. Apparently HP has completely redesigned the Omen laptop to improve the thermals...and from what I've seen from watching MANY reviews the thermals are really t"op of the class" with this laptop.....so good on them for investing the engineering resources to bring us a better laptop all while keeping the prices reasonable. And good thermal characteristics should mean the best possible performance and excellent longevity. The HP Omen (with Ryzen 4800H) is currently my top choice for my next system. I think it really hits the sweet spot for me. there really is a lot to like with it. I'm just waiting for one of those $200 discounts deals from HP or BestBuy on the AMD 16GM/1TB version. Cheers.

It was either this or the Razer 15 base which is 1.5x the price and questionable build quality checks. It achieves a good balance of price vs specs especially with the Ryzen cpu. Way to go HP!

Love this little machine. I can play almost any game at high-ultra settings without breaking a sweat. My only issue is the keyboard layout, which is pushed to the left, making me miss a bit, especially the backspace and delete keys. Haven't gotten used to it yet, since I usually play at home.

This came out in 2020. I bought mine second-hand in 2021 for $300 cash. I wanted a slim portable gaming laptop for on-the-go. This is my main computer to do everything. I have dual monitors on a vertical mount. I keep my laptop shut and connect an external gaming keyboard and mouse. I basically use this laptop like a desktop PC. It's always on sleep mode so a push of a button on the keyboard or mouse will turn it on. It has a mini-display port so you need to buy an adaptor or a wire from Amazon with two different heads on each end. I got a 240 hz gaming monitor and a regular 1080p HDMI monitor dual screen setup. All in all, it's a great laptop. The only problem is that the fan sound on high performance is extremely loud if you want to play games you MUST use a headphone. Otherwise, change the power to balance or low power mode for regular usage and video streaming. I came upon this video because I was looking at whether this can use more than one nvme SSD drive. I just got a 1 TB Acer Predator gen 4 nvme SSD drive with 7400 MB/s read speed and 6400 MB/s write speed for $50 Amazon. I will be installing it shortly.

What brand, and is it still running at the rated 3200mhz?

@@chrisr8244 it's crucial ram, hwinfo reports 1600mhz which I believe is 3200 (always shows half). Just slotted in and worked without fuss, still going well. The model number on mine is 15en0006na, just typed in on the crucial website and showed me the compatible ram.

Hey Chris, this is the exact ram I have. Brought on Amazon for about £220. Crucial CT2K32G4SFD832A 64 GB Kit (32 GB x 2) (DDR4, 3200 MHz, SODIMM, 260-Pin, 1.2 V, CL22) Memory, Green. Task manager says 3200mhz and hwinfo says the half speed rate, which is 1600x2. Looks like all is running as it should without modifying the bios however there was an automatic bios update when I brought the machine.

Nice gaming machine. Good keyboard layout. If one buys it to productivity work with a lot of numbers then a PC with a full size ten key is a better option. Like the AMD chip performance. Like the easy ability to open up the machine (no removing rubber strips etc.) and the flexible upgrading options once inside. Seems to be reasonably priced for what you get with this. Camera and internal microphone are okay for what one will use it for. On a personal note my brother and his family just moved to Vegas. I am visiting him there and I played your videos for him of the Samsung phone where you took pictures by the lake. He recognize that lake and area and it turns out he lives 5 minutes away from that lake. Small world. Anyway as always another great review.

the most obvious plus of this laptop-the best mobile platform+the fastest cpu on the market+still in the "bang for the buck" range. do you know how much intel asks for i9(btw still worse than renoir coz of consumption)? so, for anybody who needs cpu power, 6 and especially 8 core renoirs are a blessing. just by the fact of price/performance/efficiency.

Hi! Fellow engineering student here :) I feel like it would be good for that kind of thing because it has the power to run different CAD softwares nicely as I’ve seen so far. Of course it is also a good thing to have for gaming, so if you are into gaming as well I would definitely recommend. I got this laptop to be a hybrid between the two and I am in loveee. Good luck!

Got a question, i bought a omen 15 this exact model 15-EN0023DX, you think the ryzen 7 4800h chip will be anti bottle neck proof if i decided do egpu , also.. i don't know anything about gaming on pc except i watch tons of videos this pass 2 weeks.. and i saw a very dirty cheap idea with a item called the beast 😂, just a adapter to hook up a external GPU, with a ps, etc.. so again do you 🤔 think is this possible or I'm just overwhelmed by how much technology is moving fast with next gen graphics card and demanding AAA title's... I just wanted to enjoy a game with all the bells and whistles but not lost my wallet ...

Much like everyone I work from home now and I have a 2019 Macbook pro. So I decided to get a gaming laptop, I got an Acer with 144 screen and a good GPU. The screen is just not that good when comparing it to Mac. I know there's only so much you can get for $1,100 but still I expected a brand new laptop with 144 screen to be better that a 2019 mac.
