Fantastic video review of this little beast! Not the best laptop around, but for the price (currently around $640 on Amazon for the i5-8300H & 1050ti 4GB) its hard to complain. And btw, THANK YOU for addressing the thermals of this laptop. I've seen other KZbinrs say that thermals are "alright" and skip right over it as if its not important. I got my temps down (after watching your thermal paste comparison as per another video of yours) and achieved an undervolt of -0.150mV as well as lower the turbo clock multiplier to 34 (3400Mhz for 4 active cores). Thermals sitting in high 80s but much better than high 90s. Again, awesome review! You gained a sub!

@@ixflashesixflashes7267 It is in this video. He doesn't go into specifics on HOW he undervolted, aside from stating the program he used as well as the undervolt he was able to achieve, but basically download ThrottleStop, open the FIVR tab and adjust the voltage offsets of the CORE, CACHE and Intel GPU. Personally I was able to get a stable -160mV drop (I know I stated 150 drop above, I have since played with it more) to CORE and CACHE and a -130mV drop to the intel GPU. Additionally, I lowered my max turbo clock down from 3.9Ghz on all 4 cores to 3.4Ghz. I had also re-applied new thermal compound on both my i5 and 1050ti. I now sit between 86C-90C MAX after playing Battlefield 1 for over an hour straight. Even after lowering clocks and adjusting voltage offsets Im playing BF1 at Medium settings 1080p between a very smooth 60-80fps. You can further decrease clock speed. My max is set at 2.5 Ghz and it doesnt really affect gaming (will be noticable for some rendering programs for example). Your cpu undervolt value is what i run as well. Also undervolt your gpu you'll get a noticable difference in temps. Mine has a 1060 and gpu averages 80 on witcher 3 on ultra while cpu is at 75 (without any repasting) so you could probably get lower with a 1050 ti.

I managed to snag one of these for £600 shipped on eBay from the US to UK. I was after a new laptop that could play older RPGs and Mmorpgs and from that perspective it doesn't disappoint. I bought a WD blue 500gb SSD for £50 on Amazon and using that for the OS over the internal 1TB HDD helped improve basic windows performance which was severely lacking tbh. Using your under volting and over clocking guide I can get 40-60fps in most modern games at 1080p High-Max settings with 80c on the GPU (over locked +110mhz GPU and 625Mhz memory) and 82c CPU with settings at 3.4Ghz and -140mv on the CPU and -125mv on the cache. After this windows has also stopped lagging so I'm guessing it was overheating and thermal throttling even in windows. Thanks for the tips and review. For £650 total ive paid im now happy with the performance and heat output this thing gives.

@OWNORDISOWN6 жыл бұрын
Some people may hook up their laptop to say a 2560 x 1440 or even 4k monitor to play. I have an ultra wide 3860x 1440 monitor for example so they may use an eGPU to get decent frame rates. As time goes on that GTX 1060 will start to show its age too and its a relatively easy way to upgrade rather than having to buy a new laptop each time.
@eldeni246 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm totally with @OWNorDisown here. TB3 adds a bit of that futureproofness, which previously wasn't available in laptops. I'd rather get an average spec-wise laptop with a reliable cooling system and a TB3 than a beefier laptop without one.
@F4Y5416 жыл бұрын
@@eldeni24 I'd rather have fun with a near-future-proof laptop with mid-high specs (i.e. gtx1070) for the next 5 years or so and THEN probably slap on an eGPU. I understand that money is tight for many, if not most, of us but I also think its worth the investment. Plus we can always assume that we'd have a GPU enclosure that could be the size of a m.itx graphics card (so the though of making it more portable and easier to carry is the key concept) somewhere down the line.

Great review, I just subbed! I am planning on buying the i7 1060 144hz version of this laptop, with the hdd replaced with a 960 gb ssd, but I am afraid that the heat will lower the performance too much, or that the laptop will get too hot. Do you think that a cooling pad such as the Marvo FN-33 might help? And could you tell me what settings you tweaked to lower the temperature of the CPU without lowering the FPS? Also I don't really have any alternatives in this price range as I live in Lebanon and we don't get all laptops, and sometimes they are much more expensive than in the US or so. The unit I'm planning on buying is 1170$, but still around 300-400$ less expensive than an omen with similar specs. What would you recommend?
@OWNORDISOWN5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the sub Sandro ! Good move on the SSD. That will help a lot. If you can also get dual channel RAM that will help also then it will be quite a fast system. That cooling pad looks pretty beefy, do they have a 15" version? Still, has a nice central fan and am sure it will help because that is one problem with the pavilion - the fans don't move a lot of air. I used Throttlestop to lower the multipliers to 33 and undervolted to I think -140mv , but you can try anywhere from -120mv and up. Lowering the clock speed will help a lot and I didn't take a hit on frame rate at all. Good luck !

I wonder if this will make difference at all in more single-core centric games, also is it possible to show how much we can config the fan in the bios?

I made a 'pandemic' buy at costco and got one of these. It was only $100 more than the similarly spec'ed HP 'regular' machine, but it came with 512G PCIE HDD and a GTX1650 w4G instead of the 1TB rusty HD and Vega10 integrated graphics. CPU is Ryzen 7 3750h. Only issue is that you don't get 8Gb ram. HP locked 2.1G for the internal Vega10 card, leaving Windows with only 5.9G to actually use. That might have made sense if the Vega10 was the only card, but with the GTX1650 there, the Vega should have been capped at 512 or even 256M. There is NO bios option to change this. So, for that reason I would still recommend the G3 or G5 dell over this as Hp still doesn't seem to "get it". @@nischalsubedi4213 the Alienware 15 has a large battery and will get you over 7 hours , other than that you are talking about $1600 say for the MSI GS65 for 8 hours. Or even the Aero 15w. When you get below this amount you can look at say the XPS 15 2 in 1. I have that and battery lasts about 9 hours and it has a dedicated GPU equivalent to a GTX 1050 but only a quad core CPU. But you can use it with a pen and take notes at school. Below that battery life drops as they use smaller batteries typically. In the 5 hour range. All th he recent laptops I have covered fit this profile

Just discovered your channel (Subscribed) and love the videos. I have just recently bought the Dell G3 with the I7 8750H and GTX1060 Max Q and am very happy with the Specs for the price. Not sure I have seen you do a video regarding the thermals for this particular configuration but have seen others on KZbin and the thermals out the box don't seem too bad though I haven't had the opportunity to stress the machine yet. Do you have a video for undervolting this particular CPU/GPU combination? Love your videos, keep up the great work.

Hi there Gary ! Glad you found my small channel :) The G3 is a nice laptop, I had the i5 model and it was great value. I did a video tutorial on using Throttlestop and XTU to undervolt the CPU. I prefer Throttlestop personally as you can also alter the multipliers - thereby reducing the max boost clock which can help too: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnSaZaCNbrdondk In case you ever need it I did a video on undervolting your GPU. You can also use the voltage curve editor to limit the boost at a certain voltage too. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oXykhaJtnrGdjsk

Hi, I'm thinking of getting the 8750H+1050TI version, with a 7200 RPM HDD/8GB RAM, at 750$ vs 1000$+ for Dells and Asus. I've noticed that in your video and also the comments that it throttles even with the 8300H, and I really don't want to spend that money and not get the full potential of the processor, apparently this machine can only manage to get the 8750H 10% faster than the 7700HQ in the 600$ Pavilion power I was previously looking at. What are your opinions? Is the the throttling that bad?
@OWNORDISOWN6 жыл бұрын
It does throttle pretty bad. Those temps are very high as the fans dont spin up much. Cap the CPU at 3.3 Ghz and all is golden though. You dont lose any fps is gaming is your thing but I would only bother if you can get this cheap.

Assuming ur looking at the i5-8300h, 1050Ti versions - both the laptops are similar in performance, almost identical. However the heat dissapation will vary, and in my opinion, the HP Pavilion is a bit worse in thermals. That could lead to throttling and worse performance. You can undervolt the cpu, and it does help tremendously, but it still stays very hot. They both look very standoutish for laptops but the HP Pavilion physical design is much more subdued, Acer nitro 5 screams gamer and (looks) bulkier, but they are around the same weight. Both laptops will give you similar performance. Both will standout like a sore thumb in terms of design and will give off the gamer aesthetic (not for everyone), but they are both very recommendable laptops.

@OWNORDISOWN6 жыл бұрын
The G3 can be had with a GTX 1060 so that wins the gaming category, then the Acer Nitro 5 with its GTX 1050ti. The G3 can also be had with a six core CPU and although it runs hotter than the G7 it is still manageable. I had the i5 / GTX 1060 model and it costs $750 now. The Acer Nitro 5 is supposed to be good. The MSI GL63 looks like my GP63 so it will have decent cooling but it seems to max out at a GTX 1050.
