Good you featured this model Morten. Buyed a DL580 G7 for £140 two weeks ago with two X7560, 8GB ram, 2x 146GB SAS and two PSUs. Wanted two more CPUs, more ram and two extra PSUs so i ended up with another one for £250. That had 4x X7550, 32GB ram and four PSUs. Both servers arrived at my doorstep on friday after work and they were heavy! Will probably ditch one case after taking out all usable parts. 4x E7-8837 is on its way from China. This will be an expensive but fun homelab to run:)

I just got a DL585 (48 core AMD version) as a first server for $150USD with 256GB of ram and 3TB worth of drives. Looking forward to picking it up tomorrow along with a DL380 G7 for applications that dont require the pure horsepower this thing has.

Hi Phylax That is a big toy :-) be mindful of the power usages. calculate what the servers will cost to run 24/7 in a year,, so you know that. and then have fun :-) Thank you for watching! :-)

When you install the 2 x 10GbE ports you have to install a memory module on the board to go with it. The other port is for a flash memory module for the RAID card.

I love this server. I got one off ebay for a super deal. I use it at home for just about everything but my firewall/router. Yes it consumes a ton of power, but I have it shut off / on every day during hours no one is home. Only downside is the last time I attempted to install esxi on it, I couldn't perform PCI passthrough of my additional SAS controller card for my external array. Otherwise I love the server, its a beast!

When loading the hypervisor onto SD cards, are they special cards designed to handle writes better and longer or are they just standard SD cards and the hypervisor setup to not write to it much? I ask because I have an HP usb stick I've used as my thumb drive for about 4 or more years now. It uses SLC memory chips. This was more common early on, but most places stopped making them with SLC chips. I found the HP one in a server parts manual so I bought it. It was the only way I could stand to run portable apps from the USB stick after my previous thumb drive broke. I haven't tried any of the modern usb3 sticks. Just wondering if they did something similar with the SD cards.
@sascha55057 жыл бұрын
Yes there are special SD Cards available, the "HP Flash Media Kit" is one option. Personally I prefer normal SD Cards with higher capacity of a common quality brand like Kingston, Sandisk, and so on. Never had any issues running 24/7.

Hi joebleed If you run your ESXi hypervisor from USB or SD, It will usally ask where you want to put the log,,, It do not want to use the USB or SD card for that. Thank you for watching! :-)

I have 6 of these in the lab at work, plus some 580 G5s and a couple of 380 G7's. They certainly are back breakers especially when you are having to put them in the top of the racks. Not looked at the G9's but I thought the torx tools were inside by the PSU? That's where they used to be on the older DL models before they started putting them on the back.
