I bought 2 3speeds 15 years ago for my 4.6 and still on 1st tranny. Only had to adjust 1st and 2nd gear 3 was ok out of the box. When xl came out I put 5.9 motor in it with gpm billet duel exhaust. Also upgraded the suspension to xl for better stability. Integy piggy pack shocks are great too with 100 oil. Still bashing it today along with kraton exb 1/8 8s. Also put Robinson spur, heavy duty clutch bell, stainless brake upgrade, integy billet steering and hubs hitec titanium high power servo from the 90s great servo bought a few back in the day still work great been bullet proof. Upgraded the pinion and drive gears in diffs with heavy duty gears. When my last set of Big Joe tires wear out and i cant find another set somewhere then its 17mm hub upgrade so i can put on modern tires. What a fun truck and with a few upgrades its bullet proof.

Right on. Once you get it sorted it's epic. Mine was missing second and jumping to 3rd. To cut out lots of trial and error what I did was get it to shift into 3rd (because you can access that with out dis-assembly). Then I set the tension on 2nd gear clutch to match 3rd gear. I did that by feeling the resistance on the 3rd gear clutch cam by pressing on it with a screwdriver. Bam, 2nd gear came alive. You can go from there. Can't wait for the next one

hey bro! lOL! yes! Lets get that XL shifting ASAP! I've dealt wit that on my own XL too. Turn all the set screws in fully on all the speed once you disassemble the trans gears to get to the clutches. I would also ensure the gear clutch itself can move freely, then do trial and error, start on the 2nd speed like 4 turns out, and 3 turns out on the 3rd gear. see how it goes.

thanks bro! But this motor seems to have low compression, it took me a while to get some speed runs, it kept shutting down after 2-3 speed passes, a new Dynamite 28 is already here.

I"ve just finished the rebuild of my 3 speed transmission on my Savage XL project today.I could figure it out that both speed clutches wasn"t nearly matching according to the advised settings of the manual..So I guess that the main issue of most 3 spped issues is the fact that the guys who prebuild the savages somewhere in china doesn"t work accurately as they should..Allthought I bought the Savage XL in used conmditions I"m pretty sure that the first owner never had opened the transmission case before ...I could also clearly see that the 2nd speed was never engadeg on my savage,because the place where the clutch engage on the inner of the spurgear was absolutely free from scratches..So i"m pretty sure that it had only shifted from the first to third.. It"s kind of sad that so well ingeneered cars comes so crappy built from the factory.. However,the Savage is in my opinion one of the best engineered big block Monstertrucks of the entire R/c world..They are so many brilliant details!!

The best way to go about setting up this 3 speed transmission is by temporarily locking out the 3rd gear so the truck doesn't shift to the 3rd gear. Step two would be to make sure you are getting proper shifting from first gear to second gear at a proper rpm. Step three just make sure your 3rd gear clutch is tighter than the second gear, and then adjust from there for shift point.

43mph was good to see and confirmed my working out! I have it worked out to reach 42.8mph@32k engine rpms, that’s before the tyres start ballooning so 43mph makes sense. With the high speed 3rd gear set (from the XL) I have it calculated at 48.9mph, again before tyre ballooning!

hey man! Awesome information here in your comment, I love a good set of facts like you presented. On my own XL I as able to hit exactly 46 MPH in various attempts. My goal was 50 MPH but I need an extra tooth on the clutch bell to attempt that record. Anyways, nitrogang!! More on this savage soon.

Please tell me you have a parts list to upgrade the savage x 4.6 to 3 speed.they don't sell the assembled trans anymore that I can find but I work at a hobby shop awe just got a big Box of old hpi parts and I believe all the parts for 3 speed is in there. Buy I can't find any tutorials or anything at all on how or what parts ate needed. Hpi even took it off the learning lab on how to convert it. Someone said it was there but it's not. Please help lol

hey dude! This particular savage originally had the regular 2-speed unit. The 3-speed module was optional in this one, and installed by the previous owner. The XL model always came with a 3 speed though.

hey dude! thanks for watching! More on the savage soon, it's going to be getting a new Dynamite 28 for it. turns out the engine for this run was fairly low compression, my goal was to only test the 3-speed, which as you saw, didn't shift at all.

hey bro! yes! this was mostly a test run video to diagnose the issues. And so far we got 2 main issues, the 3-speed not shifting at all, and I know it's tough to notice, butt he motor has low compression, It kept shutting down after 2-3 speed passes, which indicates low compression as the motor heats up. But a new DYNAMITE 28 is here and ready to go!!..

hey bro! I just pulled up the exploded views and it does not look like it's got a one-way in the gears. I worked on the trans in my XL model, and it was just basic gear hub clutches. the 2nd and 3rd gear should not be engaged, that means your clutch is engaged, you know. I recommend you disassemble it and inspect the individual gear hug clutches, it will be obvious. .

I took mine apart today and it does have a 1 way bearing on part #86362 mine was seized to the shaft. Also had 2 bearings seized and spinning in the housing. I found a used case online that will be delivered today. Hopefully it's in better shape than mine.

originally the 3 sp came in nothing it was order only in early 2000's why everyone is having trouble is because you don't read the instructions. what would you guys' do if it was like the old days when there were no rtr's. every kit had to be built . adjust the gear as stated in instructions. if iis earlly shift one way late shift the other its not hard. it cracks me no one can read. and you don't have to disassemble trans. 20 yrs and no one gets it. lmao

What sucks about it is that there's no real gain in speed in the 3 speed i remember buying mine back in the ol days and be so sad i thought i would gain 10 kmh nope not even

hey man! well the claim made by HPI is 10% more top speed, so that translated to .1*45mph= 4.5 MPH. I agree, it's not worth the money for that, better to just get a taller clutch bell and get the same results. The 3 speed is mostly all SHOW, and lots of work..
