Just realised Elizabeth was just a child here; 15 going on 16. One can only imagine how intimidating her beauty must have been for grown ups around her. Hopefully she was protected from the perverts of Hollywood at the time.

I've always loved this movie and this song, and not to mention Jane Powell herself. However, I have to say that I could watch these technicolor films simply for the color alone! They are a real feast for the eyes. I don't know if this film was actually filmed using the three strip technicolor process, but its color is still stunning nonetheless. I know in the early technicolor days that great care was taken in selecting just the right colors for sets and costumes to show off the coloring systems potential. I mean, just look at "The Wizard Of Oz". Technicolor was relatively new in 1939 and I think Noel Langley knew what he was doing when he changed Dorothy's slippers from silver to ruby...I think silver would have been amazingly dull.

I love the old sing-along scenes in the movies. These are invariably such uplifting or dramatic moments (Victor Laslow in Casablanca, Edelweiss in Sound of Music, and this great scene from A Date With Judy). I wish the movies would do this again with great sing-along songs and drop the cynicism and anger (at least suspend it). Spielberg, how about it? Ron Howard? Give us a couple of great scenes like this.

This should have been a longer finale, with everyone dressed up and looking great in soft Technicolor; it ends just when it should be getting going. And what a cast, everyone from Wallace Beery to Robert Stack and Carmen Miranda, too. The real star of this was Elizabeth Taylor, who stole every scene she was in just by being in it.

@@coreycox2345 Sorry Corey but music was never about describing the tribulations of teenage angst. No--- life never has been that bucolic but that music was and that's why it was so loved everyone. We were recovering from the most horrible war in history. The beauty and joy helped us all ( yes I'm pretty old ) get through it. BTW, I love R&R , rock -- Floyd, Led Zep and on and on. The gradual transition into rock 'n roll was the most interesting era of American music. Listen to the likes of Johnny Ray, Frankie Lane or even the Andrews Sisters. Not to mention the country stars. Wonderful musical times . Well anyway back to Alvin Lee and Ten Years After---- move over Eric.
@coreycox23452 жыл бұрын
@@bruceb5481 Makes sense. At times, it was, though. I was thinking in the context of my youth, the Lawrence Welk Show and the stifling conformity and boredom of the suburbs of the 1960s, which was a bit later. Your comment reminds me of how in movies of the depression, everyone was often rich. All products of their moments in history.

(admin) Innocence lost since that time, culture changing and breaking down in my opinion and whether society survives is in question. Its not if its beliefs are true or not ... what it depends upon is if the beliefs work and hold it together.
@caraqueno2 жыл бұрын
Innocence, for whom? All of the evils that modern society has now were very much in place back in 1948 when this film was made. In several ways, people had it worse. It was these utopian (all-white) suburban areas portrayed in films that offered a respite and retreat from the very real world outside the movie theaters. Film stuidos churned out the make-believe to give audiences a respite from and hope for a better life on the outside. Too often, commenters here confuse "movie reality" with "reality reality". That can happen but it goes nowhere.
