If there ever was, or is, or will be a better singer than Jane Powell, I have not heard her yet. How we went from this talent to the screaming junk we hear in restaurants and stores and media today, I will never understand. Jane Powell was the best of the best. Thanks for sharing this wonderful treat. I loved this movie; Vocalize was fun to listen to also.

One of my favorite songs by Jane. Other recommendations are:"Face to Face" from 3 sailors and a Girl, and "I dont know what I want" from The Girl Most Likely.A great singer and a super person. I've met her 5 times !

I certainly agree about "I don't know what I want" from the equally excellent GIRL MOST LIKELY.

I found this song on a CD of various songs when I was in college and was never able to find it again. I think it is simply incredible.

Thank you for posting this treat on the Tube. Was just sorry to find that the sheet music to this song was published without the lengthy soliloquy-type verse. Perhaps the verse part of the song was too "story specific" and the publishers thought it wouldn't ever be performed in a recording. Just the same, I wish the verse were included in the song sheet. Jane Powell always sang so beautifully and "effortlessly."

Michael Feinstein sang the intro. The sheet music producers were just lazy.

@@NeilsRoom Yes, I heard Feinstein’s rendition and was pleased he included the introduction. I guess the long introduction probably would have added two, if not three, pages to the published sheet music.

Goodbye Jane. :(

sad but true, this was the last new song written for a Jane Powell musical, supposedly a follow-up to Seven Brides, but not quite, to put it kindly. Jane did one last MGM musical, "Hit the Deck," Vincent Youmans score, and a full line-up of MGM contract stars, but somehow... Ann Miller's last musical, too.

This song is more beautiful than anything from Seven Brides For Seven Brothers.

@@NeilsRoom pretty enough, i guess, but Wonderful, Wonderful Day from Seven Brides is far better, and Jane's peak, vocally, in an MGM musical.

@@richardlee8495 It doesn't have the spiritual romanticism that this song does, however.

@@NeilsRoom but a far better song for Jane. as a "follow-up" to the very successful, Oscar-nominated Seven Brides, Athena fails for me. Jane sings it very well, but the other girls seem like mere props for her, and they don't look too happy about it. ah, well. these little musicals were going out of style at this point, and i suppose i was a little sorry at the time that this was happening. i was very young at the time. sorry, too, MGM did not keep Edmund Purdom on longer. a princely fellow, student or not.
