Raider: 600-Round Update

I just bought one yesterday after reading and watching so many positive reviews on TISAS 1911s. I have Colts, Springfields, 2 les baers, an Ed Brown, so i have some 1911 experience. I wanted a "truck gun" and a fishing gun, so this came to mind. Saw it at my local gun store and bought it. I am impressed by the fit and finish. The slide to frame is fitted and blended. No overbite or under bite with the slide to frame, extractor was blended and fitted with no extra material, thr front edges and corners are slightly radiused, and the serrations machined evenly. It shows good mschining and attention to detail. I did a complete detail strip and disassembly to inspect, clean, lube, and oil. Every part looks well made. The hammer felt gritty when thumb cocking but completely smoothed out after i took apart the mainspring housing and greased the spring tunnel to allow the spring plug to glide smoothly. TISAS say they had stopped using MIM parts and all parts are now heat treated and hardened prior to machining. I replaced the recoil spring with a Wilson extra power flat wire recoil spring, replaced the VZ G10 grips with Magpul black plastic pebbled finished grip (VZ made grips and not some cheap subcontract part), tossed out the slot grip screws with stainless hex screws, and replaced the long plastic trigger with a short alumimum trigger. I measured the trigger at 4.5 pound, very acceptable pull and will lighten up with a few hundred rounds. So far I've been pretty happy with it. Thanks Henry.

After shooting the first 240 round with lots of failures to chamber and lock into battery, my gunsmith inspected it and recommended I not grease the slide and frame rails but just use light oil. I cleaned off thr grease and used Break Free. Fire another 100 rounds. It didn't like 10 round Wilson mags. Kept flipping the round nose up on the first round. Fired fine on all subsequent round. No problemw wirh 8 round Wilson mags. Most likely the 10 rounders had too much spring compression so the first round flipped up. Ok. Cleaned it thoroughly, lubed with light oil, but a dab of grease in the sear and hammer hook, and pulled out Ed Brown 7 round magazines. That ought to run well now. Just gotta find what the Tisas want to be fed.

A few months ago, while searching for just one more .45, I began looking at the Tisas Match 1911. I discovered a video from Ransom International in which they mechanically tested for accuracy and function. I expected it would do okay, but that proved to be a serious underestimation. If you are looking for a quality target 1911, for a reasonable price, this may be it. And as Howard has proven, if you want a M45A1 (but refuse to pay an OUTRAGEOUS price), the Raider may be just the firearm for you.

Good morning HR. Looks like the Raider is a winner. With that first 7 yard group you could split a playing card instead of driving a tack. Accuracy and reliability can be opposing qualities. A loose, rattling gun may run when filthy and a tight, accurate one will need cleaning sooner. I'd rather do the maintenance and get the precision. Hope you don't have to remove your grips. With the Loctite you may pull the bushings from the frame. Good idea to keep some spares handy.

Shot a hundred rounds through my Tisas SSR Duty and not a hiccup with FMJ and 200 gr. And 185 grain hollow points. Ran great! Did change out that plunger spring and also changed to an extended mag release and new spring, as the stock one was way to strong. Works great now. May get the front strap checkered also really like the look and feel of that.

The Turks have come a long way when it comes to weapons manufacturing. Back in the '70's my dad had an MKE, which was a copy of the Walther PPK. It worked fine but it wasn't no Walther. Look forward to your report.

Impressive accuracy and an excellent update. I bought two Tisas pistols in 2015; one with and one without the firing pin block. (I sold the one with the FP block). I now own three Tisas 1911 pistols including one in 10mm. Without exception they are reliable and accurate. Your Tisas "Raider" is a fine pistol and I look forward to your 1,000 round report. WRT the grip screws, mine also had the same problem. I cleaned the threads with denatured alcohol and applied one drop of clear fingernail polish to the screw threads before tightening. Problem solved.

Got my Raider back from Tisas today, their recall. Fantastic service. I sent it as they provided, they sent it back in 1 week. FedEx had it 6 days!!! Emailed me it would be delivered yesterday, it never showed. But in today with a clearly written work order. Trigger upgraded, trigger pull weight 4lbs 4oz, and they included an 8rd MEC GAR mag. I haven't fired it but sure like the trigger pull. I am impressed and pleased.

Glad to see this series with the Raider. I bought a .45 Stingray Carry at about the same time you got your Raider. I only have about 50 rounds through it and so far my experience has been about like yours. I disassembled it and inspected it but did not lube and clean before the first range trip. Functioning with the 230 gr ball was flawless and accuracy at 15 yds was less than 3" offhand. I had not been to the range in a couple of years and had not fired a 1911 in more than 20 years so I was happy with my results. I expect all of that will improve as I get a few hundred rounds through it and a few more hours of dry fire practice. It is already smoothing up nicely.

I use rubber O-rings for the grips, especially on stag grips. Screws won’t back out.

“Is the 1911 the pistol for me?” My short answer is always this. Go out to the garage and take a long, critical look at your lawn mower. Is it clean? Is the blade sharp? Has it been serviced this mowing season? Does it start on the first or second pull? Is it covered in dry grass clippings and dirt? Is there mud caked on the wheels? Is it hard to start? Have you ever sharpened the blade? In this you will find your answer about the 1911.

The funny thing is so many reviewers discount budget guns. I have a girsan 1911MC in FDE. I put VZ G10 grips on it. It did have problems with the magazine it came with but wilson combat mags solved the issue. Tisas and Girsan are what Canik used to be only a few years ago. Tisas is already got the PX9 Gen 3 which is crazy for the price.

HR, That is one heck of an accurate pistol. But to a certain extent, that's to be expected with a 1911-type handgun. This sort of reminds me of an Auto Ordnance 1911A1 that I bought back in 1981 (because that's all I could afford back then). When I started shooting it, it grouped about a foot at 15 yards. I was very disappointed, but as I kept on shooting it, the groups got smaller and smaller until it finally settled in and shot groups of 2 inches at 15 yards. I still have the gun (although considerably modified now) and it still has the original barrel in it. But as you found out, 1911s need to be cleaned and lubricated to work well. However, if you do that, they will never fail you. Cheers, Zeke

Oh - forgot to mention I am one that always cleans a gun after shooting it - 20 rounds or 200 rounds. Cleaning does not bother me and I need to know all my guns are always ready to go. That could be a factor in malfunctioning guns too - as you had mentioned. The ONLY time I don' clean a gun is if I am on a bird hunting trip and only fire a few rounds / day and intend on hunting again the very next day. I will just wipe the outside down with an oil rag and clean the gun thoroughly at the end of hunting. Unless of course I encounter rain or snow - then it gets cleaned immediately.

Nice review, as always. I found this for less than $700 on a couple of sites. At this price point, the small things you mentioned, like the plunger spring or minor wear marks in the finish, are acceptable -- for me -- because they did not compromise on performance. Love your work!

This is a good news story. I was hoping it would be so. Now I want one of these. As you pointed out, and know, keep a 1911 clean and lubed just right, use quality mags, it should run well. That has been my experience. Some do not clean their guns much, but I was not trained that way. My Dad, a WW2 veteran, demanded all weapons cleaned after use, with him inspecting! It did not take long to learn what right looked like from his perspective. In 28yrs of Army service I got to know cleaning weapons quite well. Add modern cleaning materials into the mix and it is not hard to keep things clean. Good video and thanks HR. Happy shooting Patriots!

Good update. The grip screws coming loose happens with almost all 1911's. Some people use O-rings, others use thread locker. I wanted one of these but now if you find one the price is crazy. I found one at $850. + shipping. At that price I will pass. At $600. it was a deal. Thanks again for sharing.

The Tisas Raider seems to be an outstanding 1911A1 pistol. I am impressed with its failure to fail until it just couldn’t spit out yet another round!! Excellent!

Lol I think it depends what you're shooting. 1911's and steel framed guns in general? Sure, every 500rnds or so. Polymer framed striker fired pistols? They can go on forever. My M&P9 that I shoot USPSA with has 7,000rnds through it in 1yr and it hasn't been cleaned for 3,000rnds

Great performance. The only ammo that it might not like is the 210 gr HydraShok Deep. My Springfield 4" Range Officer with a mach grade ramped barrel eats everything I've put through it except for the HydraShok ammo. The way Federal configured the nose of that particular bullet has some sharp edges that don't want to ride up the feed ramp and into the chamber. Everything else that I've put through her has fed flawlessly. After over 1500 rounds down range, I can say that with the carry ammo I use I trust her 100% to never let me down. If properly cleaned and lubed a 1911 is just as reliable as any polymer striker pistol around. And a good HP out of a 45 is far more effective than any 9mm made. Maybe I just love a 1911 45 because I'm getting old, but I always figure that if it ain't broke, don't try and fix it. John Browning was a genius and the 1911 is a testament to his engineering expertise.

Howard, this was a wonderfully enjoyable Raider update (which, obviously, is a superb 1911A1). Perhaps I can best express my admiration for this weapon - and for your marksmanship / expertise - simply by suggesting that LtCol Cooper would be proud of both. As you’re aware, he favored 1911A1’s, chambered in .45 ACP, and he scoffed at the idea that 8+1 - really, 7+1 in his era - capacity was inadequate. In fact, he repeatedly indicated that the probability of requiring a reload was nil. So, great report, much enjoyed and appreciated, and woe be to any miscreants who invade the Funk household when this Raider is at hand.

So far, so good with my Tisas Raider. I've has some feeding issues with hollow points but that is more or less a 1911 break-in issue and I did end up replacing my safety plunger spring. The original spring was fine but i wanted something more positive like my Springfield Armory has. Something a few bucks and 10 mins couldn't handle.

Again and impressive report on a Tisas 1911. Chalis grip screw O rings will cure those lose grip screws . My 1911A1 service special pulls at 4.5 lbs. With no creep, unbelievable pistol for the price .

My Kimber has just over sixteen thousand rounds on it and has in the past shown a preference for certain bullet shapes. It loves 200 gr. flat point semi wadcutters and most 230 gr.round nose. It doesn't like any of the 185 gr. bullets. I've noticed also that not all 230 gr. round nose have the same exact shape. I shoot mostly plated lead bullets and haven't had much trouble at all. Looks like a great performer. I really appreciate you pointing out that, despite how much we love them and how easy they are to shoot, 1911's aren't like modern pistols; they need more care being clean and lubricated. Which is fine given that the basic design is over 100 years old and that in good hands they still outshine a lot of modern guns (at least for the first 7 or 8 rounds). Really impressive that in a pretty severe 550 round battery of testing, you only suffered failures to fully go into battery because of the initial break-in early on and what I can only imagine was an absolutely filthy chamber later on. Another well done video sir. It's been my experience that at least my half a dozen 1911s like to run wet. Yes, it is an old design when hand fitting was cheaper than machine time, so it's no plug and play pistol. However, if you are willing to do the maintenance you will be rewarded handsomely. I tell my shooting buddies that if they treat their pistol like they treat their lawn mower, buy a Glock!

Nice review. I just bought the 1911a1 clone last week and ran a couple hundred rounds through it this past weekend. Not one hiccup using Winchester white box 230g. I’m very impressed with these guns. Very accurate as well.

I like my Raider too. It's a really close copy of the M45A1. Too bad it doesn't come with night sights , but that can be easily fixed with glow in the dark gun sight paint without going through too much trouble.

I own 2 tisas pistols and friends own a few, i bought this one an hour ago because i dont want to destroy my Colt i bought last year. Its one of the surplus overrun models that i just so happen to be in the market for a rail gun 1911. I called a distributor and was ordering for the shop and i always ask about the railgun model, he said no, but i have the m45a1. I bought it, actually cancelled another pistol i was buying for stock. Have had crazy offers to buy it because i have it in my display only case, it has a overrun m17, m18 and m45a1. I also have my m11 that i retired with, that took an O-7 to sign off on me buying that from the Army after I was wounded in Afghanistan. I was just a CWO and had 21 years already.

Mine had a few issues with double feeds out of the box. Oddly enough the stock mags were great but a Wilson combat mag choked it up

I would add an EGW fitted oversized firing pin stop; I do that to all my 1911s and it always reduces recoil without sacrificing reliability. It seems imported budget 1911s can do no wrong with a good magazine.

After 2-days with my Tisas 1911 A1 Service the thumb safety plunger popped off. It wasn't staked properly. I should have sent it back for repair but some JBWeld fixed it up. I think the staking was either not done or really poor. I haven't had an issue since.

I hope the JB Weld holds. I've had that happen with other 1911s, but not with either of my Tisas pistols.

I read somewhere that the original Colt 45 used in testing by the US Army went 5K rounds without a stopage. Now I don't know if that was a single pistol or not. Also I don't know if they were cleaned between so many rounds or so, or if they were fired continuously or over a period of several days. I was wondering if you may have any substantiated knowledge of that test, just for comparison. Of course that was a military grade weapon a probably a lot looser than the civilian version used in this test. I know my model 1911 mark IV has not had any stoppages in literally thousands of rounds since I bought it new in 1981. In NY case Mr. Browning's design is a classic by any standard...

If memory serves, that test pistol went 10,000 rounds without a malfunction. As you said, however, it was with loser tolerances. I wonder what kind of accuracy it demonstrated?

I've got a Tisas that did the slide stop stoppage, I assumed it was a new shooter/grip thing, but I think I'll replace mine since you had the same issue. DEVIL DOG....You CRUSHED IT at 7 YARDS SHOOTING FAST MULTIPLE TIMES. Maybe you should consider doing that type of shooting even further away and see how you do. I believe sometime the less you have to think about something despite trigger control and breath control etc etc blah blah that at times as a Marine just shooting rapid at medium distance will improve your groups.

At 350 rounds I am updating the comment made below: I have adjusted the extractor tension a little bit at a time and have smoothed all the sharp edges on the face of the chamber. Went to the range last week and fired fifty rounds of Remington 230 gr ball ammo. All rounds fed, fired and extracted and ejected and locked back like they should... except one of the Mec-Gar magazines that came with the pistol. Toward the end of the session It had two failures to feed all the way into the chamber and required a bump on the back of the slide. The other three (1 Mec-Gar and 2 Wilson Combat) performed perfectly. I suspect a little grunge caused the problem with that one magazine. Or maybe it will just wear in. I had that happen on one several years ago and it now feeds reliable without have to do anything but shoot it. Maybe I'll get a chance to find out next week at the range.

UPDATE TO .45 STINGRAY CARRY EXPERIENCE: Went too the range yesterday afternoon and fired 50 more rounds through it. Really like the accuracy but I'm having problems with both Mec-Gar magazines that came with it. The last round from each magazine jams in the chamber... always. Can't bump the round in. Can't pull the slide back. Have to drop the mag, lock the slide back and turn the handgun upside down to dump the jammed round. When I put it back in the mag and cycle the action it feeds just fine. The slide has never failed to lock back when the last round is fired. Wondering if something is interfering with the last round seating properly under the extractor or if it might just be a mag problem?

It sounds like a magazine problem to me. Possibly an issue with the follower. You might want to contact Tisas USA and discuss thre issue with them.

What is your cleaning and lubrication schedule for a 1911 and is it different for a modern polymer style pistol?

Not really. I clean them after each firing and lube them with oil on the frame rails, the barrel locking lugs, and the front of the barrel around the muzzle.

Curious, where are you shooting? Personally I shoot at one of three ranges regularly, Parma Armory in Parma, Range 42 in Medina, or A&A Gun Club in Garretsville.
