Tisas Raider: 250 - Round Update

One of the things I learned during my tours in the Vietnam conflict was from an old Korean Army Sargent. He told me, which I always continue to do with my 1911's when i had a feed problem, was stick my little finger around the bullet speed ramp area to wipe it clean after multiple rounds fired. This does clear the ramp to continue unopposed firing of the 1911. Its a quick fix (cleaning) during my multiple firing that seems to work for me.

Confirmed with a Marine Armorer friend of mine that Raiders were using the Hydroshok hallow points in their 1911s. They had the best feeding of all the hallow point rounds they tested. The US Government also has a long standing contract to procure this ammunition so it made the acquisition process easier.

Great video! This is necessary content for people who freak out over glitches. You were methodical and worked through the issues. These things can happen with far more expensive guns, but keeping in perspective the price point of the Raider, it was definitely worth giving it a chance and you proved that. A lot of people want to bash a gun or brand if it doesn't run the first thousand rounds without a glitch, and without maintenance

I'm not bashing but it is nice to know your firearm is reliable enough from the factory to not have to do all that lol I've only ever bought 1 1911 from a company called fusion firearms for around $700 and I've never had a single problem with it or had to do anything to it to make it work right.. it doesn't make it a bad gun if you have to replace the spring and use certain ammo but it's nice having peace of mind and a lot of people don't want to pay that money and still have to work on the gun to make it run as it should from the factory.. I have given some thought to getting one of these myself but I think if I get another 1911 it's gonna be 10mm and the rock island tac ultra MS is one that I'm really interested in getting.. it's not that big of a deal for most of us but say someone had those same problems with a Glock or something.. it would be designated a piece of crap by everyone on the internet and you would see a lot of videos from guntubers bashing it.. if it runs it runs.. if it doesn't it doesn't.. if you have to do some maintenance to make it run & it still runs then your good to go.. you also have to keep in mind how many people might buy that as a 1st 1911 and not have the knowledge on how to remedy those problems and think they just got a lemon or something

I’ve said for many years the 1911 is not a good beginners firearm. It’s an “Expert’s handgun.” If someone has the requisite experience/knowledge to maintain and use a 1911, there aren’t many other handguns that they will prefer.

HR, Good video. Many, many years ago, I managed to qualify expert on the Navy course of fire with a bone stock 1911A1 .45 out of the Armory. A few months later, I shot the same course of fire with one of my own .45's, and again, qualified expert, but had a much higher score. The Navy would let you do that many years ago. I doubt that I could do that now. The idea of using a private gun on a Navy course of fire is actually a little amusing, but things were considerably looser in the 70's, especially in the Navy Reserve. Cheers, Zeke

Excellent follow up video, HR! Answered the questions that I had. After a couple of decades with many different 1911s, I can say that what you found with this particular gun is similar to what I’ve experienced with many 1911s. There is ALWAYS a break in period with EVERY gun. Some 1911s simply display it much more obviously than others.

BTW: My buddy bought a used base model Springfield Government Model .45ACP from our local range. it had been a range rental, so it was well broke in. They had replaced all the springs before selling it. The only issue was that it came with a factory magazine, which was very unreliable. That wasn't an issue as my buddy had 20+ magazines that did work in his other 1911s. The store manager was right, the Springfield magazine did not work, but the gun went wackety, wackety, wackety with all of the other magazines. Wackety, wackety, wackety. Nobody is criticizing Springfield for their 1911s, so lets not trash Tisas for one magazine that has issues with one type of hollow point. Wackety. That was a 7-rounder.

When i worked at a shop and someone bought a new pistol and maybe it was there first one i told them to dissassemble clean and lube per manual and to fire at least 200 rounds first prior to carrying it for defense and to expect some issues in that 200 rounds. If after 200 and there are still problems then there may be a problem and to bring it in and we will determine what it is. Some high end 1911s call for a 500 round break in period.

I just got my Tisas Raider today and the safety spring is really great. Very positive and very crisp. Just mentioning it because maybe it could be a QC issue that you had or maybe they recently changed what springs they were using.

Haven’t read all the comments but to hit on the “finish issues” of the original M45A1. The issue wasn’t that the cerekote was wearing and cosmetically unpleasant. It was that the finish on the internals were wearing in such a way that it would cause a sludge to build which was contributing to mechanical malfunctions. Just FYI Excellent review in both videos!

I just got a RIA 1911 which started engaging the slide stop for some reason. I noticed that the thumb safety was kind of sloppy whilst engaging and disengaging. I thought back to this very video and just ordered myself a Wilson Combat plunger set. Thank you!!

Good follow-up, and here's my $.02. I have found, regarding the premature lock back issue, that sometimes it is a clearance issue between the slide lock and the ogive of the round to be chambered next. Once a round is chambered, the next round will sometimes slide forward in the magazine. This round is, of course, resting very close to the slide lock. If the ogive of the next round is rubbing against the slide lock, it can force the slide lock up when the slide retracts from recoil. I have had this happen on two of my 1911 pistols. In one pistol, all it took was a change in ammunition to some that had a lesser ogive dimension. In the other, I had to (very gently) remove a smidgen of material from the slide lock. The latter was on a Rock Island Armory FS Tactical. I never had an issue with any ammunition after that. If you place a cartridge in a magazine into the pistol with the slide removed, and push the cartridge forward a bit, you might be able to see the ogive of that round touching the slide lock. Try several different cartridges to see what I mean. In most cases, just a change in ammunition can solve the issue.

As soon as you said you were having feeding issues with hollow point ammo I knew it was a magazine problem. I ONLY use Wilson mags for hollow points . You very definitely get what you pay for with 1911 mags. Good video, you have generated interest for me.

It's funny, with my Rock Island A1 9mm it shot brass case but not steel, after a good cleaning it ran steel but not aluminum or hollow points, another cleaning and a slight polish to the feed ramp it started running everything just fine! I really feel that it was mostly due to a "Break in" period. The more I shoot it the better it gets! Probably the same with your Tisas!

I had a 2012 or so Colt Commader 1991 Series that began having issues going into battery by just a tiny fraction of an inch after a couple hundred rounds. Bought a twenty five doll hair Wilson Combat spring kit, and never had another issue while I owned it.

Good followup video Howard! Break-in of any semi-auto firearm will vary, but is necessary to get the most out of it. Your comment regarding trying different ammunition and magazines is spot-on. Like I mentioned in your previous video, the Tisas Raider pistol is definitely a viable choice for someone looking to get a 1911.

I usually consider mecgar as some of the best mags to get; but in 1911s I have switched to the Chip McCormick and Wilson mags for any hollowpoint ammo. With RN ball I use the MG and CheckMate mags.

Most non custom pistol have a 200 round brake-in period, some even mention this in the owners manual. I have been acustom to disassembling a new pistol and checking the slide rails and feed ramp for nicks and/or burrs. I use a fine honing stone or emory paper to smooth any imperfections. Thus far this simple first ownership firearm step has prevented any ammunition feeding issues. I have read that the custom firearms do this step at the factory but not in the production models.

To whom it may concern. Palmetto State Armory is selling their 45 ACP, FMJ, AAC brand of ammo, for $20 a box of 50. After shipping I paid $25 a box. That's crazy cheap for 45 ACP! That's American made Ammo for less then imported. At that price I can almost afford to shoot my 1911. 😉

Very good video HR! I think you have helped me solve the FTF issue (as I suspected) with my Metro Arms American Classic "Amigo". I was having issues primarily with FTF(5,6,7th round) hollow point and sometimes ball ammo. You had mentioned to me before to try Chip McCormack mags. Well guess I will get off my "piles of retirement cash" and order a new mag. (feed ramp has been polished) Thanks so much HR!

Sometimes i disassemble, Sometimes i may not. Then i work the action and moving parts so they are lubed, free from fingerprints, potential debris, etc. Of course it doesn't have to be ballistol. Ive had smoother break in periods by doing this. Gods speed.

Thanks for the great review. I have a Tisas 1911, and for the first two rounds from a full magazine, I got nose down jams every time. I bought a new magazine catch that holds the magazine .040” higher, and that solved the problem. Feeds like butter now, even with Black Talons.. I think the feed ramp was slightly improperly cut on mine. Love the pistol, though. The Turks build a nice handgun.

Leave those mags fully loaded for a week or so. Rounds will be stripped off easier with less tipping. Also, if the extractor is not set up correctly, and your ejection pattern is erratic in the vid, the cartridge rim will not feed up and under the extractor and on to the breech face as it should. Again the cartridge will get pushed down and jam hard against the ramp and with a HP you’ll have a stoppage. I’m gotten pretty familiar with the Tisas. 1911 Forum has Steve’s Extractor Fitting Sticky on Gunsmithing and Troubleshooting-well worth studying!

Interesting follow up assessment. I have one 1911 in my collection that used to have a magazine issue that would leave the top round nose-down in the magazine. I chased my tail on that one for awhile until I noticed there were copper traces on the slide stop. It turned out the ammo I was using had a slightly out of spec overall length. It would literally stub its nose on the slide stop as it was trying to feed. Simple fix by using better quality ammo. Great video.

Mr. Funk, another good review and glad you found out the issues holding your 1911 back. In my experience, feeding issues are generally traced back to the magazine or extractor tension. I know there are those who say that a break in is required, but my OCD will not let that stand lol. I have to find out what is holding up the works! My accuracy loads are the classic Hensley & Gibbs #68 200 grain lead semi-wadcutter on top of a load of Bulls-Eye to give me about 800 to 850 fps. A very close second are the Hornady XTP in either 200 or 230 grain bullets. I learned to load pistol ammo with the 45ACP and to me it's one of the easiest semi auto rounds to load for, and so long as you use a fast to medium fast powder it does the job nicely.

Almost invariably, nose dives into the feed ramp are magazine related. Also, the Cerakote finish is, in the case of feeding, "sticky." The two places where the round must slide, the breech face and the ramp, will require some burnishing to become slick. I've standardized on the Chip McCormick RPM mags.

I found a Tisas 1911 for sale on line for $430 with free shipping. It's not the Raider. Its their Duty model, with G10 grips, trigger guard undercut, step cut rear sight, fiber optic front sight, and front and rear slide saturation. It doesn't have the accessory rail which is something I wanted, but man that's a good price for that pistol. I was really tempted, but I just got a Tisas 1911 the other day. It's their Basic 1911-A1 with the Black Cerakote. I really like it. I put a Wilson Combat front strap checkering piece, and put some Rosewood Pachmayr grips on it. (I also made a few sets of grips for it, but my wife ended up liking the look of the Pachmayers) The front strap checkering piece really made the grip of the gun feel more secure. It's a 25 L.P.I. piece of thin metal that is held on by the grips. According to the amazon reviews, some people have had issues with it sliding down under recoil. (I think that's because 1911 grips are not as wide, front to back, as they should be. The Pachmayr's I purchased were significantly narrower then they could have been. Thus the reason I made my own grips) To solve the problem I added heavy duty T-Rex double sided tape underneath the checkering piece. It hasn't moved since I put it on. The one complaint I have is that the black finish wears off pretty fast. I don't really care too much about how it looks, that's my wife's department. Nice video concerning a entirely fine 1911A1; thank you Howard. I am glad - but not at all surprised - the Tisas Raider’s break-in problems were easily resolved . . . and I agree that it is a perfectly decent firearm for the range, for lawful defense, for plinking, and even for hunting (although I’ve never hunted with a 1911A1 chambered in .45 ACP). Over thirty years ago, I bought an excellent Kimber stainless custom; it was a “real expense,” at the time, and I was disappointed when - initially - I experienced several failures to cycle properly in the first (maybe) 100 to 150 rounds (using some common brand of JHPs). BUT, by the time the Kimber had fired perhaps 300 hundred rounds, it functioned perfectly. My point here - as we all know - is new, often more tightly machined, autoloaders can have break-in issues, most of which are resolved easily and soon. Newer shooters may not have these experiences - my gut tells me “polymer wonders” rarely have them - but they were quite common with all-steel semiautomatics. Incidentally, that Kimber was a gift to my son, it protects his home and family, which may indicate my confidence in its reliability, precision, accuracy and durability.

Sometimes I just KNOW that a particular weapon is going the be very good - even before I’ve fired the first round - and almost always it is. My CZ 75B, Gen 1 M&P 9mm, H&K USP .45 Tactical, German Sig P220, a bunch of my Ruger and Smith revolvers, and others fall into that “special” category. I have the distinct feeling your the Raider will fall into the foregoing category. Similarly, I knew that my G23C and G36 wouldn’t become beloved - for me, alone - but I bought them, shit them good deal, agree they are reliable and durable, but dislike them (again, this is only me, it’s not a “universal truth”). I hope you have great range day with the Raider . . . and I hope it’s today.

I might add, check the grip screws after firing, they will loosen up after firing, a common 1911 issue, usually on the left side due to torque during firing.

Chief, as a long time 1911 aficionado I have had many 1911's hang up and have FTF due to HP ammo (especially the Winchester Black Talon back in the day), despite the manufacturers claims that it will work with them. There are some magazines that do work better than others and I too have had great luck with the Chip McCormac (Colt marked) mag's. I do believe those magazines present the round at a slightly better angle for better reliability. That said, on the rare occasion I have carried a 1911 I have chosen to carry 230 grain Federal American Eagle hardball. The A/E version is the highest velocity of hardball in a standard configuration and I figure that since the bullet is already just sky of 1/2" in width, expansion takes a back seat to penetration. So yes, some 1911's and some magazines will work better than others with HP's , but if my life depends on it 230 Hardball is what I use - better safe than sorry IMO. BTW, I normally gravitate to Colt 1911's but I must say your Tisas is hard to beat for the bucks!

Thanks Bobby! I mentioned in the first video that the Raider will mostly be a field and range pistol. That means it will almost exclusively see 230 grain ball ammo (since that's my preferred .45 ACP ammo for those purposes). In my carry 1911s, I use the Federal Hydra-Shok load that I tested in this video. Still, If I had to rely on ball ammo for defense, I wouldn't feel particularly nervous about its performance.

Tisas makes a quality 1911. I've fed mine a large number of truncated cone (flat nose) bullets without an issue. WRT mags, in 1992 I was advised by Ed Banks, one of the best 1911 pistolsmiths in the country - now deceased - to use GI issue magazines. I bought half a dozen new Vietnam era surplus GI mags and another 8 when the CMP offered them a few years back still in the wrap. It was good advice and they have worked beautifully. I've never found it necessary to buy brand name expensive 1911 mags for 45acp.

A good magazine like a Wilson 47D will usually solve issues. If you can't find a JHP that runs I've always heard try Golden Saber though to be honest I don't remember function testing mine since I haven't carried it accept to and from the range....yes..w ball

Thanks Dan, I’m not worried about the hollow points in my Raider. The only issue I had was with one specific bullet (HAP), and the magazine swap solved that problem. Beyond that, my Raider will normally be used with mil-spec ball ammo.

It might of been interesting if you had tested the Tisas Magazine along with the Wilson and McCormick Magazines with the hollow points to see if the break-in theory had merit. The Wilson Mags are my go to magazines of choice.

I intended to do that. Unfortunately, when I got to the range that day, I realized I left the factory mag at home. I tested it the next time I went out, but by then, I didn't have any of the "HAP" ammunition left. I now have some more of it. So, I may add another update in the future (500 rounds?)

I can't get the Wilson mags to eject out of my shooters arms scout pistol. They feed well so are in my rotation of magazines. I'm thinking the old girl needs adjusted on the mag release

@@opinionsvary the magazines will not fall out when you press the mag release button but you can pull them out by hand so it's not super tight but it's not doing what it's supposed to HR said that it could be something with the mag release button itself I'm just going to start with something basic besides a shiny or magazines I guess isn't a bad thing right

another magazine I have had luck with is the Mecgar.... That being said... I have half a dozen old surplus mags and..LOL... they all function really well. I think some mag makers are not making long enough ? 9 times out of ten for accuracy a handload using 200 grain cast and coated bullets at around 950 fps works for all the 1911's I have been around.

I agree that spring replacement is trivial, and shouldn't be considered a "gun" problem. It's hard to QC a weak spring at the factory.

I stopped by a local gun shop for a look and was discussing Colt availability with the manager. It appears that shop in now stocking several of the Tisas models, the manager was quick to let me know Tisas uses many of the same internals as Colt. While there is some doubt in my mind on that statement, I will say my experience with Tisas has been far superior to the 1911 manufacturer from Marikina.

This is my second Tisas 1911, and I don't think it will be my last. I think they are really putting out some good handguns.

I have a Tisas. They are well made and due to the exchange rate and lower labor costs it would be quite a bit more expensive if was made here. I am no expert, but there isn’t much difference between my Tisas and some basic 1911’s from Springfield

Thanks for the video. The one thing I am not happy with is the polymer trigger. If I were to buy one, I would have to replace that. I do like the tank commander. That was a good video that you put out on your evaluation on the tank commander.

HR...Kudos on taking the Bull by the horns on the Manual Safety Spring Change. I've yet to own a Quote Bargain 1911 that didn't have some little something that just didn't measure up to my expectations. My Raider and 1911A1WG both have Barrel Links that were not properly machined or ginked up during the Install...both will soon be receiving Wilson Combat Pin and Link Upgrades. Now. I see from other Comments posted the Factory MecGar didn't make it back to the Range for further Testing and Evaluation. I've had Nothing but luck with MecGar , regardless of Brand that they provide OEM equipment to. I'd very much like to see the MecGar used after the added Round Count through your Raider...and maybe a little cleaning of the Mag Itself. Don't give up on it... sounds like everything else is moving in the right direction.

Not giving up at all. Actually I’m quite happy with the Raider. The factory mags did make it back to the range. They make an appearance late in the video, and they run just fine with ball ammo and the more rounded hollow points.

You mis-understood me. I was speaking of the MecGar Magazine. I think we both know the Raider itself is a very capable platform after a little break in . I know mine won't be going anywhere.. and an A1 Mainspring Housing and Flared Magwell in FDE is certainly on my To Do List....I think the M45A1 and the Raider should have come with a Flared Magwell from the start ..and to think the M45A1 came from the Custom Shop side of the house 🙄

I have this pistol. I'm 1000 rounds in without a failure. I've never had a 1911 run as good as this one. Mine is actually the stainless carry model but it's the same Edit: I do have 1 magazine the gun doesn't like. It's a pro mag extendo. Won't run with any ammo

Pro Mags seem to be sort of hit and miss. I only have one and it runs great. Others have lots of problems with them.

Well done HR. These Tisas 1911’s are some of the best budget 1911’s available, they just need a few upgrades that bring it up to par with much more expensive ones. I’ve been also considering getting the Wilson combat group gripper kit which improves accuracy as well. They go for $29.95. Do you have any experience with the group gripper? I was wondering if it really gives better accuracy with the extra spring tension that forces the rear of the barrel up into the locking lugs in the slide.

Looks good, you could get that group smaller im sure but not bad , you shoot offhand great, 3 inches or under at 25 is great for a duty gun .Caffeine is bad for tight groups, when I drink coffee the groups get bigger...lol

I have a Tisas Duty .45 which has been pretty much my carry pistol for a year or so now. My practice, with any new cocked-and-locked pistol is to carry it with a cocked hammer, safety on, but with a loaded magazine and empty chamber. I would, of course, only have to click the safety off and rack the slide should I actually need it. If it gets through those several several days of empty chamber cocked and locked carry without the safety spontaneously switching to the fire position, then I will start carrying in traditional cocked and locked with a full chamber. Sorry to say that the Tisas Duty was the only pistol I ever had that actually failed this test. I sort of expected that it would, however, as the safety from the get go felt pretty mushy for a 1911. I replaced the plunger spring with one that I purchased from Wolff Gunsprings. I noticed when I had both springs side by side, the original Tisas spring seemed weaker as well being noticeably about 1-1/2 to 2 coils shorter than the Wolff spring. That cured the problem. I think this one just slipped by QC.

You're royally messing up if you're not carrying one in the chamber. Sometimes you don't have time or space to rack the slide. If you're going to carry, do it correctly.

@@EdwardSnortin I only carried with an empty chamber for a couple of days to verify that the safety detent function was reliable. After a day or two of carrying empty-chamber I switched to my normal Condition 1 carry. As I said in my original post, while during my empty-chamber test period, I found that the safety on my Tisas Duty had in fact switched itself to 'FIRE'. This had to be fixed before I commenced Condition 1. Hence the replacement of the plunger tube spring. I then spent another day or so carrying empty chamber to verify that the safety now worked properly. Except for the finish and the addition of the picatinney rail on the dust cover, the Duty and the Raider are pretty much the identical pistol.

The magazines that come with the Tisas are Italian made. Another reviewer stated to use a better quality. Wilson is one of the better ones, expensive, but worth it.

I own many 1911 magazines, including Wilson’s. The factory Tisas mags are running fine now. They seem to need a little break-in, much like the rest of the Raider.

I had to change both magazines out. To Wilson combat magazines. Both the magazines I got with my Tisas stingray 9mm carry. Didn't lock the slide back and the one magazine wouldn't fit in magwell.

@@hrfunk no I couldn't find a name on it anywhere. Just a patent pending on the follower. I'm not sure if it was a checkmate or Mec Gar. They said that's what they send with them. So I told them to send me Mec Gar back. I'll stick with the Wilson combat magazines for carry tho. And use others at range... They need to put better magazines in with there 9mm 1911s tho for sure. I have the RIA 45 Parkerized... I looked at the Tisas and was just a bit sidelined by the Cera coat. Not so much for getting marred in use. Rather the fitment between slide and frame after many rounds.. Did your Raider loosen up at all... Thanks for the great video's.

1:40 what were the hollow points? Was it factory ammo? I've found that even on factory loaded ammo, the plated type projectiles don't function very well in several different guns I have chambered in 45 auto. Barrys bullets are a good example. They're .452 and some eat them perfectly fine, others it doesn't like at all. Probably some chambers are tighter than others, but plated projectiles aren't nearly as consistent in size as a metal jacket bullet. My dad's Thompson is really picky about ammo.

Not 1911 related but but ammo jamming related... I spoke to an (ret)police armorer of S/W 5900s and he told me that my Model 915 can actually dry cycle empty brass and it did, repeatedly and consistently. By hand, with a quick rack and not by dropping the slide on a case. I EDC one of those .40 CHP 4006s now and it can do it too. Amazing that these two pistols can cycle empty and rear-heavy brass. Some guns jam with a certain bullet weight but these Smiths cycle with a bullet weight of zero, without even touching the actual bullet, no powder weight and the weight concentrated in the back of the case w/spent primer. I swear these guns seem match built sometimes, a true milestone to just how much engineering you can put in a machine. does anybody know of any other guns that can do this? My M&P nor any of my blowback cant

I had a 1911 that activated the slide lock early and it ended up being a weak recoil spring. Replaced the recoil spring with a wilson combat 18.5# and that problem went away.
