Thank you for your efforts and drawing attention to the sorely needed dismal situation in Windows 3D positional audio. To me, all of the current offerings: WavesNX, Nahimic3D, Dolby Atmos Headphons, DTS X Headphone, Windows Sonic, SBX Studio Pro leave **A LOT** to be desired. The positional accuracy (direction of sound), proximity (distance from sound source) and occlusions/reflections (materials and geometry of the world) are either not modeled or modeled only very roughly. Perhaps with the VR/AR boost, somebody (MS?) will have to solve this mess. We need true object based, reflections calculationg, true positional 3D audio with tunable / personalized HRTFs. The lack of computation power is no longer an issue. Software/API/framework/OS/Game engine support is. I still remember fondly my Aureal 3D sound card, before creative (and then MS) killed it.
@IDrinkLava4 жыл бұрын
We already have this. It's called OpenAL Soft. It's an open-source, LGPL-licensed audio API that's modular, cross-platform, supports personalized HRTFs and 3rd-order Ambisonics, and is extremely CPU efficient. Nobody uses it because today's game developers are dumb. Literally the only game in the last year or two with OpenAL was Forsaken Remastered, an indie remaster of a late '90s game. If you have a deep-seated interest in 3D audio, I would recommend checking out OpenAL Soft, DSOAL, and X3DAudio HRTF. Maybe swing by the Discord server, too.

@@IDrinkLava Nobody uses it because it's not viable for most major game releases. Though game developers can be... not sure if dumb or malicious, but i noticed that Apex Legends, well it ships Miles, but Miles has had builtin HRTF, not sure how good or bad, for several years now, but it's DISABLED in this game, and something is surely better than nothing? It literally has a like 100° panning window and doppler and offset and otherwise no spatial clue, with no top-down or front-rear disambiguation at all and lots of sound just panned hard left or hard right. This pains me so hard. Kcat is doing a great job on OpenAL-Soft, and i worked with it and shipped it before, it's definitely more impressive than people give it credit for, but there is a fundamental license problem with LGPL in this specific case. This works fine on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, where you can just supply a shared library, but probably not on iOS and definitely not on game consoles, Xbox, Playstation, Nintendo. Consoles are a crucial consideration for viability of AAA games. You don't want divergent codebases, where Windows release is so special and gets its own different audio middleware which is tuned differently and sounds different and gives audio department potentially a whole new set of issues to deal with, not to speak of the engineering departments. Using commercial audio middleware is the only viable solution because it handles all possible targets with a good level of guarantee that it will work similarly enough across all of them, even if with compromises. Plus commercial middleware now comes with advanced authoring tools exclusive to them, making replacement even less viable. This issue doesn't affect all LGPL libraries, but it does affect OpenAL-Soft, because the license is inherited. The software is forked from Creative OpenAL 1.1, which was licensed under LGPL, so Creative shares a partial copyright on the code. Often, developers of open-source libraries can offer enterprises a private version under a different license, but for this they need a complete copyright on all the code that they relicense. But you can't exactly reason with Creative.

Dolby atmos had the best height localization, I could really feel when things were above or below me. But the depth and lateral information is really bad. Like I feel like they compensated too much for everyone's ear and head size and because of this it just sounds very diffuse and almost like its just out of phase. DTS did better with lateral information but did worse with depth and height. But this is all to MY ears, and that's the main problem with every 3D audio solution out there right now. Unless Dolby and DTS have a calibration software that will actually choose the best HRTF settings for your individual head and ears, everybody's experience with it will be different. For some it might work well and for others either only mildly or not at all. There needs to be an easy way for the user to have their own custom HRTF profile applied to the DTS/Dolby 3D audio to get the best results otherwise 3D audio will never be anything other than a gimmick.

I still can't decide between the two. I was looking for something to render spatial audio in Apex Legends because the built-in stereo renderer is not HRTF-enabled at all. How this can be the case, i'm at a loss, FMOD has had an insanely simplified but better-than-nothing HRTF since mid 2000s and Miles has had one of unknown quality for a small handful of years too. Enabling Sonic has helped, but it sounds outright terrible, horrible phasing or comb filtering artefacts. A bit like a bad grainy messed-up reverb in character. This won't do at all. This comparison makes it obvious that the two have tackled the audio quality issue at least somewhat, but i'd say it's missing context, it can sound quite different with the full soundscape, plus i'm not even sure how well or how badly this or any other game uses the Windows spatial audio capabilities. Do you think you'd like to make comparison between the two in several games? You might get some growth for your channel if you demo all kinds of spatial audio solutions in modern, popular games. I don't care about Fortnite or Minecraft, but i'm sure a lot of people do. Also i think including a priori junk solutions might be useful too for comparison. Apropos that, Razer THX - does it work properly? What does it do? The one demo that i found sounded like way too much dynamic range compression and basically no useful spatial cue.
@IDrinkLava3 жыл бұрын
Just use HeSuVi with the irc__.wav preset that matches your ears the best. Apex Legend only supports virtual surround sound, not true 3D, object-based audio. Razer THX is snake oil according to one of the members on my server.
@SianaGearz3 жыл бұрын
@@IDrinkLava In the meanwhile, i tried the two, Dolby and DTS. Dolby sounded... fine, while DTS garbled my footsteps. I'm not 100% convinced that Apex won't support object based audio, though it seems likely. There's a possibility that the "7.1 Surround" detection in the game settings doesn't correspond to what the underlying middleware is doing. Unfortunately i'm not really comfy tracing into a game running under EAC, but i did poke into the mileswin64 dll that comes with the game, and the result is... so far inconclusive. It has WASAPI and XAudio2 backends, and as far as i can tell, it has its own spatialisation logic, but i can't exactly tell when it's being used and whether. The same interfaces are used to initialise both speaker array and positional audio with WASAPI, so mmdeviceapi, and i can't really see much further than that, and similarly for XAudio2 API, which has X3DAudio, it's all COM (Component Object Model) from the moment the first object is acquired, and i'd possibly see what's going on in a debugger, which i don't want to do due to EAC, but simply disassembling is not very revealing, as it's all numeric offsets and no names when compiled. As to hesuvi? I dread installing it to be honest. I heard that you need a 7.1 device for it to piggyback off of, but i don't even have a single 7.1 soundcard in the system. The mainboard is equipped with ALC221, which is 4.0, and actually sounds completely dreadful and is connected the least convenient way possible, it's literally unusable. I use the genuine Apple USB-C to headset adapter as my primary audio device instead.

@IDrinkLava Жыл бұрын
bro how do you think you're actually hearing the effects in this video
@Avean4 жыл бұрын
I wonder what is actually better between these and dedicated sound cards with theyre offerings. Basicly these are upmixers. Dolby will actually try to upmix even stereo channels to Atmos frequencies. But given a game where Atmos is not supported but still surround channels and it will try to upmix, i wonder if it its actually better with lets say SBX cause there you downmix from surround channels to stereo. Should be easier to downmix considering you know what the channels are while upmix you are left to the algorithm and hope you hit the correct frequencies. Just a thought.... :p
@IDrinkLava4 жыл бұрын
These are not upmixers or downmixers. This is a demonstration of the Windows Spatial Audio API and the three currently available HRTF algorithms available for it. You are listening to real 3D sound complete with depth and height information.
@Avean4 жыл бұрын
@@IDrinkLava Atmos for Headphones can take any game and upmix it . Confirmed by Dolby as i wondered if it only worked on supported titles, but that wasnt the case. Tried this in Escape from Tarkov which only is stereo. With Atmos enabled you will actually hear 3d positioning around you. With SBX its opposite since you take surround channels and downmix it into your stereo headset. Interesting to know the difference cause they work differently. But the API is only for communicating with the game, then the 3 HRTF algorithms upmixes the stereo or surround channels into surround channels matching Dolby, DTS or whatever? Thought thats how it worked.
@Avean4 жыл бұрын
Had to check again with Dolby how it actually works and they are telling me different things. First answer: Works with any game but better when its Atmos compatible. Upmixes all games if not supported. Then i saw games where it didnt work, so i question again. Now i got: If not atmos compatible, it will play stereo only but upscaled. Then i asked what they meant by that. Then i got only supported titles will be handled, all else is pure stereo. No wonder people are confused when even Dolby have no idea. I know Atmos for headphones do some sort of virtual surround for games that are not supported. You can clearly hear its not stereo.
@IDrinkLava4 жыл бұрын
@@Avean Atmos is supposed to give true 3D sound in supported Atmos titles and 7.1 virtual surround sound in games that support 7.1 speaker output. I have never heard anything about upmixing stereo to HRTF. Such a feat would be impossible and sound like a tinny crossfeed at best due to lack of any positional data.
@Avean4 жыл бұрын
@@IDrinkLava Yeah i think youre correct. But what you think might be going on in stereo only games where you get 3d positional audio from enabling Atmos for headphones? If not upmixing, how is it doing it. Like the game Escape from Tarkov which is strictly stereo and have no ingame HRTF of any kind. But you can see atmos for headphones is in use through the speaker icon, and you get 3d surround by enabling it. Has me baffled. Also works with PUBG which also is stereo.

@@IDrinkLava You made your point for sure, if that company came back and made it work for next gen they would easily be top of the industry? What's the best for xbox currently though. I play FPS games and I read in this thread that windows Sonic is the best? Does that apply to Astro A50 gen 3 headset? Thanks.
@IDrinkLava4 жыл бұрын
1. Aureal A3D was bought out by Creative Labs in 2000 in order to bury their tech and maintain a monopoly in the PC audio hardware market. 2. I can't tell you what sounds the best to you, that's the point of the video comparison. HRTF will sound different to different people's ears. 3. Don't buy gaming headsets, they're all garbage. Get AKG K361 or Creative Aurvana Live/SE and use a lapel mic.

@BULADAT Buy an Auzentech X-Fi Forte or one of the older Creative X-Fi sound cards and get Windows XP (or Vista, Win7, Win10 with installed Creative ALchemy Wrapper) running. The fantastic HRTF technology from Aureal lies burried in the "CMSS-3D Headphone" feature of all sound cards with E-MU 20K chip. 😉

What are you talking about? This is software, it has nothing to do with your brand of headphones. Were you even listening to the audio?
@zerotactix57394 жыл бұрын
All headphones support it. Yes i'm aware it lists some 500 headphones, but I'm guessing that's just for some preset for the particular headphone. It still works for any headphone. I'm using a headphone that isn't listed there as well.

I'm using DTS Headphone: X on the Xbox One X and as part of the insider instructions it tells you to select STRIX STRIX PRO which is a completely different sound than leaving it as Generic Over Ears, does anyone know why this is is....? I'm using to with Razer Thresher for Xbox.
