At the beginning of the 1990s, the rallying world began the process of passing the torch. The European constructors that defined the 1980s during the Group B years were still dominating in the form of Lancia and its Delta Integrale, but by the 1993 season of the World Rally Championship, the Japanese teams made their presence known on the podium. First with Toyota, then with Subaru and Mitsubishi coming into their own too.
On the streets and in pop culture, the battle was primarily played out by Subaru’s Impreza WRX and STI road models against Mitsubishi’s Lancer Evolutions. Both manufacturers were responsible for producing street legal variants of their WRC contenders, but unlike years prior, they didn’t build the bare minimum. Pushed even further into the collective consciousness by the latest generation of video games, cars like the Lancer Evolution took on reputations that transcended their origins in rallying.
In that regard, the Lancer Evolution VI is the fulcrum. It was the last Mitsubishi that works driver Tommi Mäkinen won a world championship with (the final of four in a row from 1996 to 1999), and the last competitive effort that the company put towards the WRC before exiting to focus on the Dakar. After the VI, Evos VII-X became more well-known for their roles in movies and video games than stage wins.
In this episode of Homologation Specials, our host Sam Hancock explores the legacy of Mitsubishi’s rallying heyday in the 1990s while weaving a properly modified example of the capstone of that era, the Evo VI, through its natural habitat of hairpins and other handbrake-inducing apexes.

Along with everyone saying go back to the old format, you got the active yaw control incorrect. It didn't brake the wheel, it vectored torque to the outside wheel on cornering, to help the car rotate. In this case, instead of using the brakes and essentially losing power, the differential would push power to the wheels that needed it. Technology that even in 2010 was still fairly new and advanced. Engineering explained has an excellent video on the Mitsubishi evo drivetrain and why its such a powerhouse.

@@LeHazy i know, its one of if not the biggest reasons these cars were so impressive, and they just passed by it like its nothing. This was new race technology, and they were one of the firsts to not only use it on race cars, but 4 door street cars sold to the general public. Especially when their competitors took over 2 decades to come up with something similar, it still wasn't as good as their original tech they'd been using for the past 20 years. Thats massive, and I dont think the presenter understood the gravity of this cars achievement.

I enjoy these videos, but I cringe when details (important details at that) are wrong. The AYC is a big one. Also that evo he is driving is an RS model so it doesn’t have AYC. It is also not stock so the comment of “it feels like it has 100bhp more than 280” is probably because it actually DOES have 100bhp more. If your reviewing these as homoligation cars, then a stock car should be used for the demo. The same with the pajero evolution video, there were lots of facts which were incorrect, such as the adjustable dampening. This was not present on the pajero evolution. Quality of videos are great and it’s always nice to see these classics being reviewed in modern times.. but please.. get the facts right about them as they are so crucial to the essence of these cars at the time.

tbf it is quite hard to find a completely stock VI RS with all the right options fitted to give the bench mark experience, Also on the AYC, Mitsubishi started offering AYC options starting with the VI RS onwards so there could chances that this particular car had it as well.
@novanut69
@novanut69 3 жыл бұрын
@@yimyu9828 I agree with how difficult the task is. But making a video about a homologation special car with a car that has parts changed that affect its performance and handling kind of moots the point. And then to get facts wrong about how the system works and why it was so special is even worse. There are also plenty of GSR models out there and ones that are close to or actually stock to better give the experience of the homologated road going versions of these legends. I'm not trying to bash the author, it seems like more and more, that accurate facts are becoming secondary to a polished video and views. And again, its not just this video, the Pajero evolution one has some desperate factual errors too. I am sure if I knew enough about some of the other specials I would see the same pattern. Some of the errors would be equivalent to praising the 2.5l 6cylinder engine in the e30 M3...... which we all know it doesnt have.

@@novanut69 Yes I certainly agree to your point, I did not watch any other of their videos but they seemed to have mistaken a lot of hard facts before the drive review, I was also surprised that this was a RS I clicked in with out paying attention to that, certainly it would be a lot more easier and better for the review to source a stock GSR, but I guess since this was an old vid those guys would not really give any shit about it (

Yes, this is the RS evo which had a mechanical LSD which was very tightly set up.Also had optional radio,AC, power steering, hell even the abs was optional, you could get steel rims with it too. This is basically the evo to buy if you had a tuning shop or were very serious about rallying or circuit racing. Not sure about the adjustable damping about the Pajero definitely had it , forget the Pajero evo, even the 2.8 93GLS Pajeros had adjustable hydraulic suspension.

Not so sure they built that many RSs, from what I knw RS models were only produced according to orders and there were only less 800 units produced for the VI gen, but perhaps it was only calculating the Japanese market but 2500 seems a little bit too much. Also the AYC came standard on the most commonly sold GSRs so its a bit misleading to say it was an option unless you were some of the very few who bought a VI or TME RS model, the AYC was only optional by 1999 with RS models starting with the VI
