Nice little jig! I frequently split the "chisel" point by hand on all bigger sized drill bits using a 1.6mm cut off wheel in my angle grinder. It would be quite easy to make a jig for that too! All the best, Matthew

Brilliant bit of fab work, and it works very well too! The Achilles heel of the manufactured version of this jig is the the sloppy pivots they all seem to have! Phil

Hi Phil, given the choice I will always fabricate rather than machine. It just seems like less work to me. I still don't understand how those small jigs can work properly ...... Cheers

Thanks for the video. I have the Craftsman drill bit grinding attachment (9 6677) but am planing on making a similar jig for my larger MT2 and MT3 shank bits. You video gives me some ideas on how to improve my initial design. I plan on making MTx shank to straight shank adaptors to keep my MT bits properly aligned instead of the cardboard packing you used.

Hi John, my setup is pretty crude but I do not sharpen many drills - it tends to be the ones I buy at sales where somebody has messed up hand grinding or they are chipped. A degree or two under or over on the point angle is fine for me. It took me a long time to get the jig to work properly - a lot of trial and error. But now it is pretty reliable. Regards

I need to make something like that for my very small drills. I didn't figure it out yet :-)

Very interesting. Nice job. I want to make a jig at some stage, but haven’t decided jet what and how.
@HaxbyShed Жыл бұрын
Hi Rusty, the jig only rotates in one plane so it only approximates the true profile but for my purposes it is fine. The alternative of a proper drill sharpener machine is very expensive in comparison. Cheers

G’day Haxby. Well done and it works, well. With a smaller drill rest clamped in the existing rest will it sharpen the smaller drills? Cheers Peter
@HaxbyShed3 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, I have not tried a drill under 14mm because I have a Drill Doctor however I do not always get good results with that so at some point I may try smaller drills on the jig. I see you have a channel yourself, doing well. Cheers

Jim - quite so. We are not making nuclear boilers so near enough is enough.

Haxby well done. But only 1 flute was cutting. There was only 1 curl coming off the drill bit when you were trying it out it looked like. I have the drill doctor and it does ok but not great. Was really disappointed in it to tell the truth.
@HaxbyShed3 жыл бұрын
I think you are right Anthony, I noticed that. Operator error. I need to be more careful how I use that small clamp to make sure both sides are ground the same, as near as possible anyway.
@Zappyguy1113 жыл бұрын
I like to argue that a lot of tool making is all about what's "good enough". Whether it's +/- 50um or +/-500nm, just do whatever works and adjust the machining to suite.
@HaxbyShed3 жыл бұрын
HI Zappyguy111, yes I think that's the key - "good enough" for the job we are doing. I think with a bit more care I could have got the faces ground a bit more equal as it seemed to favour one side when drilling but that's just a grinding operator error on my part. Next time will be better. I see you have a channel yourself ....... Cheers.
@ZenMinus3 жыл бұрын
It's NOT a good idea to use the SIDE of the grinding wheel for this jig. Extended use of this jig in this way could cause the wheel to disintegrate. Perhaps you could reposition the jig to use the front of the wheel.
@HaxbyShed3 жыл бұрын
Hi ZenMinus, thanks for the comment. You are right of course I should not use the side of the wheel. I only use the jig occasionally, usually when I buy another old drill, and I am always careful only to take light cuts. Also I never stand in front of the wheel and I wear protection glasses. It is a manageable risk if I am careful. Cheers.
@kylezellmann68113 жыл бұрын
I thought / wondered the same thing about the side wheeling. Thanks for addressing that concern Haxby
@oldcomps3 ай бұрын
You are correct but the side of the wheel can be used safely if used correctly, especially in an example like this where virtually no pressure is applied as its very lite cuts, you can actually find this in safe systems of work.

Hi BigAl, I've bought many "hand sharpened" drills from flea markets that were so out of whack the guy must have sharpened them with his eyes closed. And certainly I'm hopeless at hand grinding drills so I don't even try these days. Cheers
