If this headset would have been given for free the review would be very different.Mike ,Nathie and Geeeezer pal Chris all jumped into bed with Meta/Oculus years ago with long term contracts secured(Or So they Thought?) and despite their claims to be impartial All three work as consultants for various VR enterprise companies (I've Packed in the Day Job to be a professional KZbinr!) As they claim is bollocks! Mike has a healthy policeman's pension to fall back on.Brat Nathie is a child of family wealth and investments and Wassup Geeezeer (Chris) Uses other Ex KZbinrs to figure out what fingers to stick in various pies.The headset review is irrelevant.

This is such a shame. They dropped out of the consumer market for.... this? For such a high price tag and so many delays you'd think they would step back and review this further. Also to add: The sabers on beat saber fly away due to the other controller occluding the sensors. It does the same on all other headsets when you out the controllers behind them (the ones that track on the headset anyway), however other companies such as meta seem to have a much better prediction system for this.

This review is 100% accurate. I picked one up hoping it would be good for PCVR in glasses mode with a direct USB-C connection. Not only was I completely wrong, the headset died within the first hour of PCVR use. The controllers are garbage, the headset isn’t comfortable, the standalone App Store was a graveyard, the lens adjustment is finicky, there was a foggy look to everything, and the default wireless PCVR settings are terrible. None of the free apps were available.

HTC are bizarre. They have had some amazing products over the years and somehow seem to blow it 99% of the time. I remember being absolutely blown away by their 3d smartphone like 15 years ago. They had many other innovative products too and now you can't even buy an HTC phone. Quite a shame.

7:04 I'd definitely wear a universal pair of glasses. I've wanted ones that I can adjust on the fly for a long time personally. Keep in mind that the fearmongering from opticians about the "dangers" of using the wrong prescription ignores that they often times give the wrong prescription, and that it's just a ploy by them to keep their monopoly on the eyewear industry. Lots of lobbying dollars comes from them to fight online eyeware companies because the eyeglass industry is a monopoly.

I knew this would happen when HTC was doing the hype train again over Twitter, and when people mentioned the lack of confidence, they would reinforce the hype. I do think though that the hype staff likely have no idea what they are hyping up, otherwise, they would be actively lying over Twitter, and further eroding their own reputation. I do think that when products like this appear, there is something missing along the production cycle where they need to make sure they aren't proactively selling crap to people.

For the glasses only mode, you could have used one dongle that splits Usb-c into Usb-c and 3.5mm so you get both a battery and wired audio. Huge missed opportunity from you here.

For a while HTC hasn’t convinced me to consider or look into getting their recent headsets and the XR Elite isn’t gonna change my mind as of right now. I have a Quest Pro which I’m already happy with. It has a better overall package but it also has eye and face tracking built in for just one grand. The controllers are amazing which can track themselves as well. While I can admit the pass through on the XR Elite is better but everything else on the Quest Pro in terms of features is far better. I hope that HTC takes a bit more consideration with the risks and avoid missed opportunities for their headsets and maybe they can realize that

I had the HTC Vive on release day many years ago, then I upgraded to HTC Vive Pro 2 June 2021, only to spend 6 months troubleshooting MULTIPLE faults with the headset. Ultimately it was lost in transmit the THIRD time sending it back to them! HTC tried to tell me they wouldn't refund for the lost headset when using their own courier from UK to Romania. In the end I got my money and I purchased a opened but new headset from Ebay and every single issue I had all went away. Proving HTC couldn't fix all the issues I had with it and it was a faulty unit all along. I have now just sold my HTC Vive Pro 2 the other day, never using HTC again. Finally I was able to uninstall their damn software from my PC too.

Well, as a miope when you know your exact prescription life is great, and there are margins of 0.25 up or down, which are manageable for most people during an hour or even much more.

Thank you for this in-depth review. So many other reviewers have mentioned their gripes, but your video does the best at actually showing the issues. I've had my sights on the xr elite for a minute, but I think this is the nail in the coffin. I really want a small glasses-form-factor type of headset for my vr video editing workflow, but dang... such a shame. Maybe the xr elite would be worth it at 600, but never at 1k. Big screen's hmd looks amazing but I can't get with the lighthouse tracking requirement. Ah well; and so we continue to wait.

I'd just like to point out that I have no comfort issues. So if you like everything else about it just try it for yourself. My facial interface fits fine and i don't get any extra pressure on my forehead or red lines. I absolutely LOVE glasses mode for PCVR for sim flying and Simracing. The diopters are the cherry on top since I'm in need of minor correction and never liked trying to cram glasses into headsets. I do miss the index controllers though. That's something I'd love to see improved.

I've learned the hard way with the Vive Cosmos that I will never buy anything from HTC ever again if I don't have to (like base-stations). The hardware wasn't even my issue with the Cosmos, because I only wanted to use it for sim-racing, but the software. Under different light-conditions like day and night it forced me to do a new room-scale setup and just at the end of the process I could choose a seating position, which than doesn't work in different light-condition. The Pico 4 in comparison is just perfect with tracking. It saves different play-areas and recognizes them in different light. A room-scale setting can be used for months and years. The display brightness/contrast and sound got a lot better with updates. The store is packed with games nowadays and seems porting games from the Quest 2 is a few clicks.

2nd brutal review. If you use prescription glasses buy the XR elite. It comes with inbuilt one. Up to -6.0 for long distance If you want more features like Face Tracking + Eye Tracking = Quest Pro. But sacrifices the inbuilt prescription They about same price tag. Now my love goes to XR elite because of inbuilt prescription lenses.

Do you use your pico4 for pc gaming? If so, how good is it? Ive been trying with my Quest 1 on and off for years but got never a comfortable fit with it, even with a vive das. There's always too much weight on the front for me, so I'm wondering if the pico4 with the pancake glasses are a better solution to this

@GreenHeart I really like the Pico for stand alone and PCVR , but not for Sim racing. I get a better experience sim racing in valve index , maybe because index has a direct display port . Pico 4 works great in HL Alyx on virtual desktop

Is it too much to ask for: a headset to be able to utilize the same tracking capabilities as previous steam/HTC Vive trackers to mitigate power consumption, having open-back real glasses form factor with possible blockout lense for a more virtual experience, utilize the same vr knuckles/controllers as previous htc vr, and to have full VR, MR, and AR experiences?

i almost bought the xr elite and luckily i didn't and went for the quest pro when it had a huge cut down in price. Altho the XR elite looks like they have a lot of features, when you are actually using it? it's pain in the ass, all those little issues adds up to ruin the whole experience and it's annoying. the remote tracking is also pity. my frd had to end up going back to the quest 2 for games like breachers simply because the controller lose track when you are holding it in a rifle holding gesture.

I took my facial pad off of my VRCover interface and use my quest 2 with a halo style strap because as immersion breaking as light leak is.. pressure on the face even when using VRCover pads is much worse, and so is constantly adjusting the headset because of the pressure. Now the headset floats directly in front of my face and the lenses are closer to my eyes as a result of having no facial pad and to be honest, I barely notice the light when I'm getting into a game, like l4d2 vr.

I so had my hopes up for this one. I have a very large VR room and need the wireless to fully enjoy it. This headset doesn't sound like it will take off for BOBOVR and others to make third party attachments for it. Looks like I will be waiting to see the specs of the Quest 3, I also have to look into Bigscreen. I did not know it supported PCVR gameplay. Great video, you covered all the areas I was looking for in a new wireless headset and saved me from making a big purchase I would have to return.

One thing about virtual desktop in there most recent update is it cant auto input that for you. I miss typed my name into my PC app and a pop up appeared asking if my correct name can connect. after an agreement prompt, it auto added the name to the list of allowed usernames
