Probably Switzerland's CRAZIEST Car with 6.1L AIRCRAFT Engine - Startup, Drive

This is the spartanic, no-frills 1924 Delahaye 107 Racer, which sports a four-cylinder, 6.1-Liter De Havilland Gipsy aircraft engine and represents probably the craziest car to be seen on Swiss roads nowadays. The absence of bodywork reminds of the record cars of the early 20th century and simply the starting procedure alone is already quite unique ! I filmed this amazing car at multiple occasions in Switzerland: The first part of the video I recorded at the Kerenzerberg hill climb, the second part during the Lenzerheide Motor Classics.

I immediately wondered if it was going to be throwing oil while it ran. That is a consistent theme with those early bi planes. Check out Kermit weeks if you want to see some Flight of that era. Maybe this is later enough, I know it had revisions. It was putting out a lot of smoke for sure. I like it but then again knowing that and then seeing what it was racing against made me think he probably should have built a body for it. Around the 1900s this was a thing but that engine is 1925 ish. Still looks cool and is wild! Got me clicking for sure!

Very nice but what fuel you use, you change exhaust valve rings?
@PRR1954
@PRR1954 Ай бұрын
"what fuel you use, you change exhaust valve rings?" Compression ratio of these engines was about 5:1; and they were designed before leaded gasoline. This is not a highly-stressed engine from the 1960s.
@gearhead3990
@gearhead3990 8 күн бұрын
@@PRR1954are you sure about that? regardless of compression ratio, it would need at least a lead additive, to avoid the need for hardened valve seats. It has nothing to do with load, It's due to the lubricity of gasoline, every time the valves close, They rub a little bit on the seat. These early engines were constant loss oiling, and they were ingesting oil all the time. Oil would get squirted on the valve train everyday before startup and it would drip down the valve guides. Some of that oil, even if vaporized by heat would have helped reduce, not eliminate valve seat wear. Also realize that gasoline refining was not nearly as exacted as as it is today, there were a lot of impurities that increased the lubricity of the fuel. Running modern fuel and oil blends in this engine would be catastrophic both the valve train and the bottom end.
